González was born in Moscow to a Spanish woman, whose father had emigrated to the USSR. Pablo, originally named Pavel, moved to Spain at age 9 and eventually became a journalist. Polish authorities arrested him in 2022 alleging he was a Russian agent. It is believed he was attempting to get into Ukraine to sow dissent in the early days of Russia’s invasion. Despite denials it’s difficult to believe he wasn’t a Russian agent after Vladimir Putin swapped for him earlier this week.
As noted at the end of this story González still has his Spanish citizenship and can return there, or to other EU nations. Will he, and will we ever learn the truth.

Another interesting swap involved Anna and Artyom Dultsev, and their two children. Posing as Argentinians the adult Dultsevs were Russian spies, but in a scene reminiscent of the TV show The Americans the kids didn’t know they are really Russian until the swap was underway. The children speak no Russian and have now been plopped down in a country they do not know.
