A man is facing criminal charges after threatening Muslim students with a knife and stun gun this week while they were eating outside a McDonald’s in St. Augustine, Florida.
John Jay Smith, 60, is facing two third-degree felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony charge of burglary with assault or battery and a third-degree felony charge of trespassing, according to a police report.
Officers arrested Smith at the McDonald’s on Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. after he used a switchblade-style knife to threaten the students, who were in a parked car outside the restaurant, according to First Coast News.
One of the victims, Omar Abdelmoaty, told The Washington Post that he and four other Egyptian exchange students, all of them Muslim, were simply eating burgers and fries when Smith came at them.
“Get the f**k out of here, you don’t deserve American food,” Smith reportedly said.
At that point, Smith reportedly pulled out a stun gun and reached inside the car with it. The driver, likely very scared, accidentally backed the car into a pole.
“We thought we were going to die,” Abdelmoaty told the Post.
“We thought we were going to die,” one of the students said.

She was not one I’d advise to judge other people, but then most that do, shouldn’t.

I wish a judge would sentence idiots like this to things like:
- 45,000 hrs community service
- Clean bathrooms/toilets at local mosques and McDonalds 10-20 hrs per week until the sentence is fulfilled
- Wear a taser/shock collar at all times while at work; overseer/monitor will have the authority to activate as needed for compliance
- Monitor will wear a GoPro camera to document all activations, and log them so activations are only used for compliance
- Perp will go about cleaning w/o speaking to or talking to anyone and will only ask questions about the job as needed
- Perp will only talk if spoken to by others
- Perp will begin and end each workday reciting "I am cleaning toilets because I was a racist and bigot and I will continue to clean them until I learn my lesson"
- Perp will be place in solitary for 24-48 hours if he violates any of the above, or becomes abusive/violent beyond the shock collar as a control
- If Perp remains violent/abusive during service, then he will remain in solitary for a week, only to be let out to clean toilets to fulfill his sentencing obligation
