The importance of recruiting and development.

2004 - last time Iowa and Michigan won a share of the Big Ten title. Iowa has played for the B1G title in both 2009 and 2015, but fell short in OT in Columbus and within inches in a 16-13 loss in Indianapolis to Michigan State.

Since the B1G West was born in 2014, Wisconsin and Northwestern have out dueled Iowa, except for 2015.

In the NFL Draft, Iowa did witness 4 draft picks to Wisconsin and Northwestern's 3, but look at Michigan. Plenty of NFL picks, but the results haven't scored as high in division play and reaching Indianapolis.

From The Athletic:

In your opinion, what is the best school out there that takes the two- and three-star kids and develops them to be NFL-ready? — Alex M.

The school that instantly popped into my head was Wisconsin. That team has consistently been in the Big Ten Championship Game despite having marginal recruiting results as it pertains to stars. Even with less-than-advantageous geography, Wisconsin has managed to turn itself into “O-Line U.” The Badgers are routinely a tough out for Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan. The program has a plan, it knows what it’s looking for, and it develops really good teams despite not having the kind of top-end talent you’ll find elsewhere.

Iowa has one win each against both Wisconsin and Northwestern in the five years. In 2015, the Hawks last beat both teams in the same year. Otherwise, you have to go back to 2008.

Iowa has one win, in the last five years against Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, as well.

Hopefully, Iowa brings A Game against Wisconsin, Northwestern and Penn State again in 2021. The Hawkeyes were 2-1 last year. But, that 0-2 start has to end.
