The vaunted "elite" iowa defense gave up 299 yards rushing in a big 10 west elimination game. Big Game Phil. And AJ Epenesa where are you? One play and that's it?
They've come up short often in crucial situations in the last decade. This is nothing new.
Defense is just fine. The fact they had to play almost 40 out of the 60 mins largely due to the incompetence of the offense is what happened.
True. But the defense had plenty of chances to get off the field and failed.
D tackles are average. LBs are non-existent for the second straight season. There is always at least one corner on the field that can be exploited.
Yet people use the term "elite" constantly in describing this defense. They are a .600 defense just like the rest of the program.

The LBs are down right BAD this year. They are slow, consistently out of position, and are poor tacklers. Today, the Dline and LBs were dominated resulting in the massive rushing total. Very weak effort in an important game.
You people are silly. This is Iowa we are taking about. It is not like this is a blue blood program. The defense is elite considering only one five star and the rest two and three stars. Wow they allowed one of the best running backs ever to play the game to gain 250 yards. Doom and gloom wow. Starting linebackers are Junior, Sophomore and RS Freshman. They still be ranked in the top 10-15, after this game. Take a chill pill and remember this is Iowa
They did not follow the template to beat Wisconsin as shown by Illinois and OSU. Instead they had arrogance in their system.

Nah, not today. The D was shredded and did damage to itself from the get go. Freshman mlb vs Jonathan Taylor was prone to be tough...it ended up disastrous

This defense is pretty good---the ppg stats have been up there with 2009, but clearly these guys don't have the run stoppers the 2009 defense had. We lost a lost last year's starting Safety to NFL, Lbs and interior DL not up to Top5 Defense level. Wisconsin gashed this Iowa defense.....every year, Parker has a game where he gets outcoached. Last Year vs Purdue, this year vs UW. Parker is great coach but did not have a good game plan vs wisconsin.
Eppy went from a top 5 draft pick to......ya might want to think about sticking around one more year. Teams aren’t even doubling him much anymore and he still struggles to get pressure.

He usually has 1 great play in him and then.... where'd he go? I paid close attention to him quite a bit and I'm just flat out not real impressed with what he's bringing to the table throughout the game. What the hell...

I don't think our linebacker play is nearly as strong as it has been in the past. Lot of young guys out there.
You should be embarassed for being embarassed over a college football players performance.
Overall, clearly the O is why we have never taken the next step.

An elite D doesn't get chewed up like that over and over again by a running game. Even with a back as good as taylor. Interior D line needed to do more to clog the middle. LB group just doesn't have the necessary playmakers. They are adequate at best. Yesterday they were completely exposed.

Well stated. They are like the rest of the team. Average athletes that are coached to contain, not attack. Wisconsin is one of the rare teams out there with the patience to stick with their run game. They ran for 200+ last year against the Hawks.
That sack fumble should've been turned into 6 by the offense. Then the defense gets an interception in scoring territory. Another field goal. The defense set us up to win and the offense couldn't capitalize.
It's elite if you get Welch back in there and the offense complements. But when the defense makes big plays, the offense shits it away. Iowa is a contain and opportunistic defense. It gets difficult to go out there drive after drive to keep this team's head above water without letting some things slide. This game was a tired defense getting tired of carrying the offense that doesn't want to do its job.
If Iowa gets a TD on either turnover the defense created, Iowa wins. Stop this nonsense
While I agree that he destroyed them, it would have looked a LOT different if Iowa had any presence on offense. Scoring only 6 points in the 1st 3 quarters, and failing to be a threat, allowed Wisconsin to just ride their star RB and wear Iowa out.
Finally Iowa filled the offensive stat sheets in the 4th quarter, but where were they the rest of the game? Is that a coaching issue. Mind-set problem? What?
There are a lot of you complaining about the Defense giving up 300 yards rushing. Most are blaming the linebackers. The 2017 team with three senior linebackers including two now in the NFL gave up 250 rush yards to Wisconsin and 38 points. This years team with a junior a sophomore and freshman and redshirt freshman give up 50 or 60 more yards. The great Josie Jewel and company couldn’t stop the Wisconsin rushing attack.

I am saying that everybody blaming this on the extremely young Iowa linebacker core is missing the mark. Even giving up a lot of rush yards Iowa with an average offense could have won this game. Ps
Taylor was just a freshman when he ran over Jewel and company, now he is a full grown man
