The IRS is drafting plans to cut its workforce by as much as half through a mix of layoffs, attrition and incentivized buyouts, according to two people familiar with the situation.
The layoffs are part of the Trump administration's effortsto shrink the size of the federal workforce through billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency by closing agencies, laying off nearly all probationary employees who have not yet gained civil service protection and offering buyouts to almost all federal employees through a "deferred resignation program" to quickly reduce the government workforce.
A reduction in force of tens of thousands of employees would render the IRS "dysfunctional," said John Koskinen, a former IRS commissioner.

I have to imagine that means the only auditing that will be done is on middle and lower class filings.

Most of those agents were specifically assigned to chase down higher level tax fraud and bigger audits. Cutting them means more poor and middle income people will get audited because those are easier and more straightforward.

People cheering fewer IRS employees do not regularly deal with the IRS.

That reminds me, I forgot to claim $25,000 in charity donations and $50,000 in medical expenses last year.

If you're liberal, they're a dead duck. A conservative, no problem.
