I just discovered this show (on BBC America). It's based on Bernard Cornwell's novels about the conflict between Danes (Norsemen) and Saxons (Englishmen) during the time of Alfred the Great (before he became "great").
I read several of the novels many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed them. The TV series is also very enjoyable.
Bernard Cornwell, for those who don't know, is also the author of the novels that gave rise to the Sharp TV series. An oldie-but-goodie staring Sean Bean (GoT's Ned Stark) as a British soldier back in the Napoleonic era.
