The last time Democrats defended the Constitution

Great. You just proved both parties are ridiculously hypocritical. If you weren’t already aware of that, you are a moran.

Oh yeah, Republicans showing clips of Democrats defending a norm that Republicans eliminated/trashed. Now the Republicans are using clips of Democrats from that previous era to eliminate/trash the norm that they (the REpublicans) established.

Yeah, all politicians are hypocrites, blah blah derpity derp derp.

The current Republican party just needs to be destroyed. They're like their current leader, just do whatever they want in the moment, don't care about consistency, rules, norms, laws, the constitution--whatever the hell gets in their way.

Except Trump ran on a promise to place judges on the Supreme Court that support the Constitution.

He wasn't around in 2016.

You conveniently forgot that it was Democrat, Harry Reid, not a Republican...

who decided he would rather exercise the nuclear option instead of consistency, rules, norms, the constitution...you know...

whatever the hell was in his way

Reid did what he did because the Republican minority in the Senate had essentially shut down the confirmation process for federal judges. He had no choice. It was either abdicate his constitutional duty to confirm and place judges appointed by the executive branch to the federal courts or go "nuclear".

After Republicans took control of the Senate in 2015 they did essentially shut down the confirmation process at all levels of the federal courts, the culmination of which was the refusal to grant Merrick Garland even the confirmation process and and up/down vote in the Senate.

This is a new world created by the Republican party since Obama took office. They basically shut down completely and/or slowed to a crawl the confirmation process for judges appointed by a Democratic President (while in the minority or the majority in the Senate) while speeding up and bypassing normal procedures/norms for judges appointed by a Republican President.

One of the thing's about the Garland nomination that's so galling is that McConnell knew that actually putting Garland to an up/down vote would almost certainly torpedo Republican political chances in 2016, might have even lost the Senate in the fall-out of either a confirmation of Garland or rejection. It was purely and completely cynical and political, just as what's going on now is purely and completely cynical and political since they know they're probably going to lose at the least the Presidency and probably also the Senate.

Any Republican blathering about the constitution or norms or values or whatever is complete bullshit. They will do whatever they can to get what they want, probably even shooting someone on 5th avenue.

...Nailed it. Republican Party set this precedent. Break it and fire up the Democrats for revenge when we take back the Senate. It won’t be pretty when you trash American Democracy.
