Great interview with Hanks on NPR's Fresh Air today. Terry Gross has such a natural talent for getting a lot out of a person. Hanks was talking about the goofy roles he played, and that just as he started to get a few credible roles he told his agent no more goofy comedies. He wanted serious stuff only. Luckily for him he got Apollo 13 right at this time.
You do see a lot of actors get typecast, but it's a rare thing to see someone like Hanks go from Bosom Buddies, Bachelor Party, and Joe Versus The Volcano to Oscar winning roles.
He talked a lot in the interview about his father's nomadic life and multiple marriages. How he had something like 10 homes in one 11 year stretch as his dad moved from woman to woman, and all the religions he was exposed to as he moved around. He had no anger towards his father, but I wondered as he spoke of how he had to be creative and entertain himself if this helped to form his acting abilities. You can find the interview on NPR's site if you want.
Can you think of other actors who made such dramatic strides as an actor?

If I could only watch 1 persons movies for the rest of my life it would be really tough to choose anyone but Hanks. In terms of 'entertainer' he might be the GOAT.

And a quick search says that FDA requires at least 35% alcohol content for extracts.

Philip Seymour Hoffman. He came a long way from his start in films like Goober Patrol and Tunafishing '87.

All I can think of when I hear Terry Gross' name is her hip hop week of interviews. Her and the RZA go together like Easter mornin' and Lyme disease.

I really wish Hanks would do another goofy comedy. What was the last comedy he did? Captain Phillips?

Extracts have a pretty high alcohol level, like over 30%. You can make your own by putting split vanilla beans into vodka (or bourbon, rum, brandy for other flavors) and letting it sit for a couple months.

That's hot.

Just sayin'.

What do you do with the beans after the bourbon runs out tomorrow night? Seems wasteful.

Tom Hardy

Maybe Amy Adams - her first roles in Drop Dead Gorgeous and Psycho Beach Party gave little evidence of the talent to be displayed in Catch Me If You Can and 5 Oscar nominations in 8 years.
I think Tom Hanks is the Jack Lemmon of his generation - as good as there is.

Favorite Hanks movies...

Cast Away
Philadelphia
Polar Express
Splash
Forest Gump

I thought the title read Masturbation of tom hanks. Not exactly why i clicked the thread, but i am proud to say i was relieved to see it was about movies

My list, entirely on personal preference, not really overall quality of the movies:
1. Philadelphia
2. Big
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. The Money Pit
5. Forrest Gump
6. The Burbs
7. Green Mile
8. League of their Own
9. Ladykillers
10. Turner and Hooch

Then there would be a huge clump of similar type movies and then some bad ones. I liked Road to Perdition a lot, but not sure where I'd place it. I think Ladykillers is vastly underrated.

"The Burbs". Nothing more to be said. For what it's worth, Tom's son Colin starred in one of my favorite(albeit short-lived) tv series, "The Good Guys".

Tom Hanks is the best.

But, consider Robin Williams, Steve Carell, Bill Murray, Whoopi Goldberg, Jamie Foxx - not quite the transformation of Hanks but some good stuff.

I liked The Money Pit.

So did I.

Joe Mantegna as the "executive" carpenter and Alexander Godunov as the conductor were great. Shelley Long was the only thing holding that movie back; she was as annoying in that movie as Shelley Duvall in The Shining. Must be a Shelley thing.

I thought Duvall in The Shining was a great choice, yes she was weird, both looking and sounding, but I thought it added something to the creep-factor of the entire setting. Plus, I'm pretty sure that Kubrick has never done wrong, ever.

Me, too.

Anna: "How long will it take to put this house together?"

Curly: "Two weeks."

(all the workers erupt in laughter)

You are so much less attractive when I'm sober.

Thankfully, that's not that often.

He was just saying that you were good looking wool.
