The NRA Should Become a Church

What if the NRA declared itself a religious organization where, among other things, guns were religious symbols and objects.

With just a little work they should be able to qualify as a religion under government rules that say things like this:

Religious beliefs include theistic beliefs (i.e. those that include a belief in God) as well as non-theistic “moral or ethical beliefs as to what is right and wrong which are sincerely held with the strength of traditional religious views.” Although courts generally resolve doubts about particular beliefs in favor of finding that they are religious, beliefs are not protected merely because they are strongly held. Rather, religion typically concerns “ultimate ideas” about “life, purpose, and death.” Social, political, or economic philosophies, as well as mere personal preferences, are not “religious” beliefs protected by Title VII.

Religious observances or practices include, for example, attending worship services, praying, wearing religious garb or symbols, displaying religious objects, adhering to certain dietary rules, proselytizing or other forms of religious expression, or refraining from certain activities. Whether a practice is religious depends on the employee’s motivation. The same practice might be engaged in by one person for religious reasons and by another person for purely secular reasons (e.g., dietary restrictions, tattoos, etc.).

And once NRAism is a religion, every adherent to that religion would be free to carry a gun, right?

The NRA's response to literally everything is to tell people to buy more guns. This really isn't that hard. Oh, and there's this:

"...today less than half of the NRA's revenues come from program fees and membership dues.

The bulk of the group's money now comes in the form of contributions, grants, royalty income, and advertising, much of it originating from gun industry sources.

Since 2005, the gun industry and its corporate allies have given between $20 million and $52.6 million to it through the NRA Ring of Freedom sponsor program. Donors include firearm companies like Midway USA, Springfield Armory Inc, Pierce Bullet Seal Target Systems, and Beretta USA Corporation. Other supporters from the gun industry include Cabala's, Sturm Rugar & Co, and Smith & Wesson.

The NRA also made $20.9 million — about 10 percent of its revenue — from selling advertising to industry companies marketing products in its many publications in 2010, according to the IRS Form 990.

That is the best way to drive membership. Wouldn't you agree?

what are you trying to convey here? They got up to $52M in contributions over the past 10 years? And you're upset that much of the the NEA's income comes from the gun industry?????? Where else would it come from? I'm not an NRA member, I own a hunting rifle, but it really seems like you're grasping at straws.

It's a conflict of interest. You cannot claim that you're all about gun safety, but then turn around and hock guns to whomever you think will buy them whenever you get the chance. And the NRA used to understand this. They used to get their money from membership and not selling guns. They used to pride themselves in not being bought by the gun manufacturers. Now, they freely admit that their real purpose is to sell guns. They don't even hide it anymore.

Gun safety has nothing to do with free trade. You guys just can't make s*** up and think that people are going to buy it. It just makes you look insane.

You have said this a few times so I think you believe this, but the NRA does not sell guns.

The NRA is supports gun safety and civil liberties.

Free NRAgun rhymes with Reagan.......perfect!!

NRA has millions of members from many different religious backgrounds/beliefs, so calling them a religion would be redundant and a silly idea. They have a right to protect themselves/
Those cities with Democrat/liberal office holders still have huge controllabe crime rates and gun deaths.
The NRA organization membership has grown by millions because of Obama........ Everything that Obama sticks his nose into makes things worse/turns to crap. Healthcare (lies ensures it will turn out to be a disaster), politics (large loss of legislative seats to Republicans), gun control (now there are more guns, more people with gun carry permits). MidEast, another disaster......now the whole World can see what a leadership failure he's been... a liar standing up before them telling them how much he's done......lies and bs....he's is making an ass of himself. The NRA should be the least of your concerns.
One that is more important .....jobs

So the NRA is a gun reseller?

There would not be a need for gun safety if people did not have guns would there?

Appears they are trying to offset the 50 million that Bloomberg is spending to take their guns.

They might as well. They've certainly turned their backs on their original mission, which was safety. Now their mission is to sell guns.
I am not a gun owner or member but my friends who are both tell Me safety is a core issue for them. It amazes me how one person can be so wrong on so many issues

Nope. The NRA used to support gun safety. Now they just support guns. They've rolled back many safety measures they used to support, like background checks, and now are not much more than a front to sell guns. You cannot get the bulk of your money from gun advertising and gun manufacturers and claim with a straight face that you're not in the business of selling guns.

Safety may be a core issue for them personally, but it isn't for the NRA. The NRA has flip flopped on instant background checks, using mental health as a factor in buying guns, and other safety measures. Now they are bought and owned by the gun lobby. When your solution to any form of gun violence is to tell the public to buy more guns, it doesn't take a rocket scientist see that what their really trying to do is to move product, and not keep the public safe.

You're easily led astray.

The NRA does not sell guns, it advocates gun safety and ensures that bleeding heart liberals won't interfere with our 2nd Amendment rights.

They do excellent work with both.

When you get the bulk of your money by advertising guns, you are indeed in the business of selling guns. How naive are you?
