The official Alumni Tailgate

I got there late as I kept running into friends in the golf course lots on the way to it! But it was pretty good. They had decent food (think it was a brisket) and they had tons of canned beers. They were handing beers out two at a time if you wanted. Also, they had probably 100 portable toilets so there weren't lines for bathrooms at all.

Was it worth $125? Probably not as most people wanted to bounce around like we did, but it was definitely worth $100 (what many paid due to some sort of I-Club membership I think) if you wanted to stay there for the whole thing.

I went, only complaint was they only had Bud, Bud light, and New Belgian something or other, along with wine and some hard liqour. The food was good, not great, but you couldn't have eaten that much for under $40 inside the stadium. It was only a one trip buffet, so you couldn't continually go back.

It was the typical bravo sports marketing setup they have for huddles as far as entertainment went, but they had the OSU-ND game on a big screen, which was cool.

It didn't really feel worth $100, but if you didn't plan your own tailgate, and just bought food/drink around the stadium, I bet you would have spent close to that for about 4 beers and a solid meal.

We went and also had planned to meet other friends there. Overall, I think we all would do it again. It was nice to have plenty of seating and tables, the food was good (I had excellent BBQ beef brisket, there were also brats with sauerkraut; fresh fruit salad, good mac and cheese, corn/veggie salsa/salad, etc., dessert was cupcakes, cookies). The bloody marys were great, sodas and beers, available as well. There was a stage with large screen TV showing OSU-ND live and videos of this football season and highlights from previous seasons. One funny video highlighted Minnesota's weird obsession with Iowa, playing their "We Hate Iowa" chants and showing clips of the Hawkeyes pounding the Goofs over the years, including the famous goal post trip around the Humpdome! I liked that there was a place where a lot of Iowa people were gathered and I saw a ton of old friends and classmates. It was well organized. We were surprised that the drinks were unlimited but the food was one-time-only through the buffet line. As we discussed it though, there are always people who take too much when it is all you can eat, and you could take as much as you wanted when you went through the line once, so we understood why they did it that way. We would definitely do it again. While the cost seems high, it was nice not to have to go out and buy all of the tailgating stuff or just eat in/around the stadium; we could just show up and enjoy. Really, to participate in an overall world class event like the Rose Bowl, this price was not out of line.

Will also add that, as part of Iowa's participation in the RB, the University was required to hold this and commit to underwrite the contract; unfortunately, they didn't break even on this.

Really? My ticket was numbered almost 4000 so I'm guessing they had around that many sold? I think we were late to commit to it as well, so let's just say $100 * 4000 tickets. They spent more than $400,000 to do that event? I'm not saying you are wrong, but I am just trying to wrap my head around this for a minute.

Yes, they needed more than 4,000 tickets sold to break even. Actually, I am glad to hear you were #4,000 as they were under 3,000 not too many days before the event. No telling what the Rose Bowl charges for the location, there were a good number of staff working, tables/seating for everyone, food, drinks, etc. No doubt liability insurance is high at something like this, as well.

For those who bought tickets and are members of the Alumni Association, have you received the $25/ticket refund on your credit card? Mine has not come through yet.

The official tailgate looked like fun, but so was ours. Probably the most fun I've had tailgating. Maybe the least fun I've ever had at a game.
