The question has been answered and the issue should be laid to rest regarding why Luka Garza's number is being retired and Roy Marble's number wasn't. Even if we discount Roy's civil issues all that needs to be said is that Luka is the only Iowa basketball player to ever be named the AP National POY. He was, also, the Lute Olsen National POY and the Oscar Robertson National POY, a 2 time All American, a 2 time Big Ten POY and a 2 time 1st team All Big Ten selection. Am I missing anything? Alas, Roy never made the All Big Ten team.

I don't think you'll find one Iowa fan
questioning Garza's number being retired.
Of course not. That is not the point. Devyn Marble complained that his father's number wasn't retired and there were posters here who agreed with him. The complaint by Devyn was if Garza's number was retired for besting his father's scoring record, Roy's should have been retired, too. Even Barta was reaching out to the Marble family.

Silly me, I didn't know you were rehashing this topic just to slander the Marbles. Carry on.

Yes, You forgot to mention that he was a Consensus All-American which means that he was first team All-American by the Sporting News, AP, USBWA, and NABC and not only for last year but this year also, joins Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Bill Bradley, Bill Walton, and someone named Michael Jordan.
Along with a total of 47 other First Team & Player of the Year honors over the last 2 years. Quite an accomplishment for a non NBA player....

What has impressed the college basketball world is
the work ethic of Luka Garza. He simply has no peers
in this area of basketball. His footwork under the hoop,
his three point shot, his rebounding, his blocks, and
his attitude enabled him to be a top scorer. He deserves
all the honors & accolades he gets.

Dude is a beast when it comes to work ethic. "Mic Drop."

you do realize a number of the awards you mentioned didn't exist in RoMo's playing days....but yes Luka is the most award winning basketball player in Iowa history including the few that have been around a long time.

Here's the deal. It takes more than becoming the all time scoring king to have your number retired.

Bump Elliott made a lot of good decisions as Iowa's AD. He hired Hayden Fry, Dan Gable & Tom Davis.

And speaking of making important decisions:
32 years ago, Bump Elliott & the committee who decides these number retirement things decided to not retire Roy's number. Roy didn't reach the high bar that is needed. And no AD since Bump has overturned that decision. And why? Probably because Bump made the correct decision, like he so often did.

And I am not aware of any outrage back in 1989 on Bump's decision to not retire Roy's number. If anyone can find such outrage, please provide the link.

Maybe you should hash this out with the Marble family than this message board (who 99% agree)

Yawn. Anything else on your mind?

Roy Marble was a really good basket ball player, and an all-time Hawkeye BB great. I don't understand why Greg Stokes' number would be retired before Roy's number. Both are IMO top-10 Hawkeye players all-time, although I don't think either would be on my first team. Luka now has to have the best argument as the greatest Iowa BB player ever. I say that with a little reservation, because he didn't lead us deep into the dance, and Ronnie Lester is still my all-time favorite Iowa player. I suspect that Roy's off-court behavior is why his number has not been retired. I don't know enough about that to know whether that really justifies the omission.

Are you that dumb to think that a player who never ever earned All Big Ten honors would have ever been considered for any of the national player of the year awards?

I wasn't the one who brought up this subject in the first place. And, it was Devyn who made it an issue. And, 99% did not agree . Many believed that Roy should have his number retired despite of his history with drugs and abuse.

you were the one that decided to go down the multiple list of national awards passed out in todays world of college basketball...and we all know why. I said nothing to compare RoMo's all-big ten teams to Luka's. Obviously Luka is the most decorated all-ten player in Iowa history.

I may be dumb....better than being an ass.

Is it possible that they were going to retire his number at the appreciation event but had to do a last minute change due to d v. Issue right before? Might explain the very odd framed jersey uncomfortable presentation. I loved watching both Marbles play.

the difference is Devyn just happens to be the son of the late Roy Marble. Is it really that unusual for a son to feel his dad was slighted? Whether right or wrong...it's his Dad. So who are you? son of who?

I have a feeling if you had the opportunity to meet Devyn...you'd melt like a marshmallow being roasted over a camp fire.

I still like the ring of honor idea. Players jersey placed in Carver Hawkeye for all to see with out actually retiring numbers.
This makes a lot of sense to me. Establish criteria and if a player meets it, they are honored.

Nobody questioned Lukas number getting retired.

Ronnie Lester broke the scoring record and his number was retired on the spot.
Greg Stokes broke the record and his number was retired on the spot
Roy Marble broke the record.
Luka broke the record and his number was retired on the spot.

Rumors. I heard it was a team on team brawl but again, rumors. Any truth to it at all? I always thought there might be something to it because I saw Roy's face after the alleged fight. Black eyes and taped up nose. Anyway, Ronny Lester and Luka are the best Iowa players I've personally seen. 50's was before my tine.

Ronnie Lester led Iowa to a Final Four as a senior just as the fab five in the mid 50's. I assume that was the reason those players numbers were retired. It would have been hind site at the time to just retire their jersey's.
Same for Greg Stokes, there was no need to retire his number for breaking the schools scoring record, just his jersey, but it was and there is the crucks on the matter. This is why the Marble family is upset.
Retiring a jersey is a way to acknowledge a players accomplishment and still use the number for future players. B.J Armstrong as an example, had his jersey retired for his accomplishments as a professional, but number 10 is still in use.
Luka is on a different planet altogether, 60+ First Team and Player of the Year Honors, plus other Honors that he has earned in just the last 2 years.
I don't know of anyone that has played in the Big Ten that has earned more honors playing in the Big Ten or for that matter in any other conference that has earned that many honors. If there is a more decorated player in college basketball then Luka, I'm sure their names are the very elite, Oscar, Michael, Bill Walton, Bill Bradley, Kareem maybe a few others but the list has to be a short list.
Luka's earned the right to have his number retired in spades.
Maybe the only Iowa player...

If I felt that my father had been slighted, I would NOT have made my feelings a public issue. I would have addressed the issue with those who could have done something. But even before doing that, I would have done some homework. Devyn used the occasion of Luka's announcement to air his grievances and that cheapened the announcement for Luka. Bad timing, bad taste and a bad decision. Devyn is a big boy and he earns the push back that he gets. Your whole rely is nothing but but a strawmen gaslighting the situation. This has nothing to do with who my Dad is, but if you need to know, my dad didn't drink or do drugs, he never hit a woman or his kids and he was awarded citations for saving the lives of people and he was married to my mother for well over 50 years until the day that he died. He managed Little League teams for years and even was the League Commissioner for several years. He never so much as received a parking ticket. He went to work after finishing the 8th grade to feed his mother and his 4 younger siblings and to keep a roof over their heads during the depression. However, even though he worked, he insisted that his brothers and sisters not get jobs and that they finished school. He never scored 2000 points. I don't suppose many poster's fathers did either and I would compare my father's achievements to those of Roy Marble any day as I am sure most people would do with their fathers.

great you were ordained with a great dad - congrats. human perfection is a wonderful thing, wouldn't it be great if we all were.

did your dad also ordain you judge & jury of anyone else who might not be so perfect?

you started a thread ' a question has been answered ' when there wasn't a question in the first place ... you did so because of "your" push back and obviously your disdain toward another son who didn't have a 'perfect' Dad. BUT...he was still his Dad....who happen to have a great career at Iowa. As decorated as Luka? hell we all know the answer...one would have to be dumb not to know that.

I was a student/grad student during the years he was here. Never heard that one. And it makes no sense.
lol...on the occasion I was around certain players it was not unusual for some to refer to Roy as RoMo. I always assumed it was something that came from his high school days but not sure.

Marble and Horton, or RoMo and Easy Ed, if you will, are part of a top-flight recruiting class that will provide excellent depth. New additions to the backcourt include Kevin Gamble, a 6'7" junior-college All-America who is a deadly outside shooter, and 6'1" freshman B.J. Armstrong, primarily a play-maker. Iowa's point guard the past two seasons was converted shooting guard Andre Banks, but Armstrong will challenge him for playing time. Armstrong isn't lacking confidence. "All short guys have an invisible chip on their shoulder," says Wright. "You need a guy like that on your team."

Interesting. Never heard RoMo. I did hear Horton referred to as Easy Ed though.

If you want to slam someone, you should be accurate. I am almost sure Lester never had the scoring record, and maybe not Stokes? Ronnie was never a big scorer and only played about 3.5 seasons.
