"Sports hernias" are one of the most overdiagnosed conditions in athletes. Without an MRI that can detect a tear, "sports hernia" is one of the terms used to identify a nagging groin injury that seems difficult to locate.

Here's why I think the surgery rumor is BS: CJB would need, at a minimum, 3-4 days bed rest and physical therapy before a doctor would even call for an MRI, let alone declare this a sports hernia as opposed to simply a groin pull or sprain. This rumor came out last night, two days after the game.

Maybe wishful thinking on my part, but I'm guessing the rumor started with a paranoid guess, so it evens out. Now, like all guesses, it could end up being true but it's, at this point, a pure guess. I doubt CJ has even gone in for an MRI at this point.
