County residents also had unhealthy habits with unhealthy consequences. In addition to an obesity rate of 29.5%, higher than the nation’s rate, about 27.6% of county residents smoked — roughly 10 percentage points higher than the state’s rate. About 31.4% of Appanoose County residents were physically inactive compared with 24.3% of the entire state and 23.0% of the nation.

Much of the problem is the decline of the small town hospital. As medical care becomes more expensive, the small town or county hospital cannot stay afloat. Many have closed. Many more have been forced to reduce services.
Getting doctors (often with sizable student loans to pay off) to relocate to a farming community is difficult. The further that community is from a large city or an airport, the harder it is to get a doctor to move there.
