A popular Iowa City pizzeria is returning to downtown Iowa City after 10 years away.

The Wedge closed its most recent location at 521 Highway 1 on Dec. 29 to move into its new location at 113 Iowa Ave. That site, in between Joe’s Place and Get Fresh Cafe, previously was home to Benders yoga studio.

The new location is tentatively set to open Jan. 3.

The move moves the hand-tossed pizzeria back downtown for the first time since 2014, when Iowa City Council terminated The Wedge’s lease a year and a half early, at the restaurant’s request. At that time, The Wedge was renting a city-owned space on the Ped Mall at 136 S. Dubuque St. for more than $6,200 per month.

The city gave The Wedge a $40,000 low-interest Community Development Block Grant in 2008 to help open the downtown location, which was repaid by the lease’s termination.

Well, it looks like my resolution this year is to get fatter eating tons of Wedge pizza. The Nutcracker is so good.

Sharp business move to get out of lease early, then convince former landlord to give you $40,000 to rent from someone else near the same spot. :)

I wonder if they'll open the window into Joe's Place? I hadn't realized until I was in Joe's the other day that the small-form kitchen into Joe's Place had closed. Bartender made it sound like some sort of lease dispute.

Could be a connection between the two events. Smart business move to be the defacto food provider for a bar as busy as Joe's.

Meh. Joes was at its best when it was the main area with the bar and the little cubbyhole with the pool table. The first expansion was fine. Plenty of nights spent there listening to Warren Zevon on the juke box, but when it became a triple wide it lost its charm. The same for the Sports Column.
