People's Republic of Johnson County
The legend lives on from Evy and Hayden on down
Of the Big Ten team called the Hawkeyes.
The defense it's said, never gives up the lead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.
The Hawks are the pride of the western side
Of the river they call the Big Muddy.
The team bus headed north, Floyd on the line
Dinkytown was the Hawkeye destination.

Looking for a fourth win in a row
After the season started slow.
Northwestern and Purdue both took beatings
The third straight win, saw Wisconsin cave in.
As big wins go, it was bigger than most
A testament to Phil Parker's stout defense.
The wind through the goalposts made a tattle tale sound
As a November gale howled in from the northwest.

The Hawk swarm took the field as the Gopher fans all squealed
Who hates Iowa? We hate Iowa...Who hates Iowa? We hate Iowa...
But every Hawkeye knew, and the good captain did too
T'was the Hawks of November come stealin'
With Spencer to LaPorta, the Hawks owned the first quarter
A ten to nothing lead soon did follow.
But Mo Ibrahim and his crew were impressive too
They ran at will between the twenties.

But when the Red Zone came, their main hatchway gave in
And the defense then caused big Mo to fumble.
Following a Hawkeye three and out, and short Taylor punt'
The Gophers again were a knockin'.
It was then when captains Moss and Campbell kicked in,
A tip and a catch and Jack was off to the races.
But the zebra said no, you touched the line with a toe.
The replays showed he was mistaken.

Does anyone know where the replay officials go
When the referee blows such an obvious call?
As faux pas go it was bigger than most
And cost the Hawkeyes a touchdown.
But Brian shrugged it off and went for the throat
With a pass to the tight end down the middle.
Four plays later as the clock ran down
Came a Drew Stevens winning field goal.

With 28 seconds to go and no time outs left
Came the wreck of PJ Fleck and the Gophers.
The Hawkeyes roll, winning eight in a row
And fourteen straight in November.
Michigan steams Illini dreams,
On a last second field goal.
The bus headed home, honked fourteen times
For every big win in November.

The Bugeaters come in next with an interim coach
Hell, no-one even knows his name.
But it's Shawn Eichorst, whose name we'll never forget
" We had to evaluate where Iowa was as a program".
But Shawn and Bo are gone, Riley and Frosty gone too,
Yet the good Captain and crew are still dealin'...

Sometimes I think it’s a sin, when I think we are losin’ but we’re winning again…

saw Gordon in concert several years back. He was terrible the place just went empty after intermission. I said don’t they they have social security in Canada
I had some friends that saw him within the past few months. They said the same thing. It was awful. To end the show, he just got up and walked off the stage after the final note. Not a word.

If you could read my mind
you find that tale was a very good tell.
Just like an old tyme playbook,
like a ghost from ol Kinnick's well.

well done OP!

I saw him in concert a few months ago at the surf ballroom. It was such a disappointment. He was 84 years old and sounded like he was 104. Props to him for trying, but it was nothing like Gordon Lightfoot.

I bought tickets to see him in March of 2023 thinking that I better before one of us dies as I have never seen him before but like a few of his songs. Then recently I came across a Youtube video of a recent concert and I am now trying to get out of the purchase of the tickets. He looks like he's about to expire. Currently, I am not allowed to get a refund. I will try again after the first of the year.
Why do these guys keep going out and making fools of themselves?

A couple of years ago I saw the Marshall Tucker Band and they were terrible.

I saw Frank Sinatra near the end when his brother stood by his side and conducted the orchestra and told him what song to sing. He was worh every penny.
I also saw Aretha Franklin over 20 years ago and she was on stage for an hour and hardly sang but held the mike out for the audience to sing. We left early.

I have been to countless concerts of all kinds over 50 years but am hopeful I get my money back before the Lightfoot concert. So fare the Marshall Tucker concert is the alltime worst and Aretha's is second. Lightfoots would go to the front of the line. It's more fun thinking of all the great concerts I've seen.

And then there's 88 year old Frankie Valli. He's the only original member left of the Four Season band. He looks like he's been embalmed. His eyes seldom blink. But, he has a little bit of the voice left. OP that was excellent.

Our sport slamming music are just oldies acts now. If they're alive.

I'm going to surprise my wife and get Robert Plant & Alison Krause where ever they do their next show. Robert cannot hit it like he could doing Black Dog but he's still a hell of blues singer. All those other rock n rollers that gave him shit about the "prissy" way he protected his voice aren't laughing now.

Some good lyrics here.

Dude, we need to lay these lyrics down on the soundtrack....someone here can help with that!

"The Wreck of the PJ Fleck lead Gophers"

Is there somewhere you could add something about
"...Their oars snapped, in the cold tight grasp, of the Iowa Hawkeye talons"
