There’s no shame being a bad OC

It’s a really tough job. Look around college football and there really aren’t that many great ones. Why? It requires an imagination that most coaches simply don’t have. Clearly, Brian Ferentz does not possess “it”. And that’s that.

The shame in Iowa’s case, is that he probably won’t be fired or demoted because of “who” he is. Kirk won’t fire his son, or demote him like he would if it was someone else.

If I’m Kirk, I take the out that has been so gracefully presented and say, “I have decided to move Brian back to OL coach. He is great there. As we have all seen this season, we need help there. We’ll be conducting a national search for new OC and QB coaches.”

No shame in that.

But that won’t happen. And I think it’s a shame.

The line started going to shit under Brian. He has no business anywhere near this program.

It went from bad to worse, Brian, Polasek, and now to Barnett.
Akrum Wadley had 2900 rushing yards in three years (his last with Polasek, admittedly), Mark Weisman had 2600, all three years with Brian at OLC, and Canzeri/Daniels Jr went for 4000 combined, all while Brian was OL coach.

Barta needs to be held accountable after the bowl game. He specifically said that evaluations will be made at the end of the season. If he doesn’t see a problem with how the offense has been coached and that changes need to be made then we’ll all know that he’s not running the department but Kirk is.

Lulz, even if the rumor isn't true, I'll personally help Barta escort Brian off the premises, regardless........

What can you call when your tackles can’t handle a high school TE twist? Or, whiff on a DE bull rush? Never seen so many D1 linemen grasping at air with their weight on their toes and eyes on the turf.
And why can’t Iowa late in a game throw the fade down the sideline baiting the official to throw that flag? It seems everybody does that in desperate drives.
I would’ve been okay with a second down delay on one of those last drives.

I don't think a lack of imagination is why most OC struggle. I'd say a lack of offensive talent is the most common culprit. Fans are often slow to accept this, as there is an optimism to the idea that a team has talent but the coaching staff holds it back. I don't think some "out of the box" OC could do a thing with this group. They don't even know who to block in game 12. This year's offense is as bare a cupboard as I can remember from the Ferentz era. The same people that are being blamed should be blamed for this, as recruiting and development falls on them as well. But people act like good OC's outfox everybody. It's a physical game, and some of the most successful OC's are calling very conservative games with outstanding talent and wiping the floor with their opponents. Calling football plays isn't that hard. The hard part is identifying, recruiting, and developing talent year-after-year. It's "teaching" the game, the ecision-making, etc. If your QB is mediocre, the receivers are weak, and the offensive line is utterly inept, you have already lost.

Bingo.

The playcalling part is actually one thing BF does extremely well. Everything else on offense is a complete trainwreck. This team was extremely untalented on offense.

Most teams that experience this type of season don’t double down and start recruiting 2 star WR’s when they have immediate needs. They don’t intend to change a GD thing. Just listen to Kirk’s pressers. There is zero remorse for the effort this coaching staff put in prior to this season.

It’s called talent both player and coaching. We see it when Hawks play a good team with a good qb and offense with a pulse. They get blown out. All this ‘ they don’t play any D ‘ doesn’t fly, TCU, Ohio St, USC, Georgia and Bama all put a 40 spot on this D.

Ok, Brian.

All that we need is more Petras.

Padilla played 5 quarters this year being down by a combined 35 something points when he came in this year.

What a loser. Give me more Petras baby!

If you can’t prove yourself in horrible situations with minimal opportunities & can’t make up 35 points in 75 minutes of play: next!

I hope Iowah gives Brian Fartrentz the same lifetime contract they gave Kurt.

Stop making excuses for Brian, and start holding Kirk accountable.

Let Kirk retire with any sort of pride he has left and take his sons with him…

Or fire them both.

Mark Stoops just canned their OC after one year because they averaged the least amount of points in the SEC at 22 per game. Kirk’s own hubris will be the reason for the mediocre ending to his career. As everyone knows, he has the right guy running the defense and it’s too bad he couldn’t use a fraction of that good judgment on the offensive side of things.

Agree with that. If everybody could do it, it wouldn't pay what it does. Time to do what needs to be done, though. Nowhere else could a coach have one of the worse offenses in the country two years in a row and keep their job....... Unless it's a daddy ball situation....... Which it is....... This is why you don't hire your kid. I guess the old dog is learning new lessons.

Bf is going to get a bonus this year. Enough said
Bonuses are defined at contract negotiation. Nobody sees that payment and thinks “wow, great job on O this year”. It is what was negotiated.

Who knew that all it took to be an OC is a great imagination. Sounds pretty simple to me. Maybe you should give it a try and find out.
