There are questions on whether Nate will play this Saturday

From HawkCentral.com:

As he participated in nearly 30 minutes of interviews Tuesday, Nate Stanley’s right hand never left the pocket of his black sweatshirt.

The left hand came out, from time to time, as he answered questions. The right hand stayed put.

Midweek gamesmanship? Or is the Iowa quarterback’s status against Purdue really in question?

“I’m just going with the flow,” Stanley responded with a smile, when asked why he hadn’t shown his right hand. “I don’t know.”

Stanley banged his right (throwing) thumb against the helmet belonging to center Keegan Render early in the fourth quarter at Penn State. He shook the thumb several times and had it taped up during the Hawkeyes’ attempted rally in a 30-24 loss.

Stanley said he practiced Tuesday. Asked if he could play in Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. CT game against the Boilermakers, he responded: “That’s the goal. That’s all I’m going to say about it.”

Stanley owns a 14-7 record as Iowa’s starter. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz was scheduled to meet the media later Tuesday afternoon. If he can't go, redshirt freshman Peyton Mansell is likely the next man in. Stay tuned.

Ferentz says Stanley's thumb is fine and he will be able to play Saturday

So I admit this is kind of a harsh & hot take, but could one say that after the worst performance of his career he's basically trying to play coy with the press now? I assume KF is telling the truth here so why would Nate be smiling and talking about going with the flow? I simply don't get what that accomplishes, and yeah, I need to lighten up Francis and all of that, I know.

Strongly Concur, as I suspect the rest of Hawkeye Nation does too. Penn State figured something out before the game even started re: Nate.

That genius James Franklin KNEW Stanley would overthrow a wide open Hockenson for TD AND crowd noise and play clock running out trying to audible would lead to a crucial INT. And he knew all this before the game ever started!

Nate was fine until he over threw the wide open tight end on 3rd and short by 15 yards. He never recovered from that the rest of the game.

And the thing is, it's much the same way Nate played in Madison, East Lansing, and other tough places when the opponent brought the pressure. Until he shows the poise to handle those kinds of challenges, Iowa isn't likely to get where it wants to go.

he has always had a good fastball but not much of a change up. i assume that he was trying to take something off the pass to the wide open hochenson and the ball sailed on him. he also seems to have problems with screen passes.

Man, seems like folks here bought into the NFL talk, scouting rankings.

Nate is a true junior, halfway through his second season as a starter. Really bad games on his resume...some really good ones too.

Do I wish he was more consistent? Yep. Am I shocked when he struggles? Not really. He’s a typical Iowa QB. Just good enough most the time.

6-2 at this point, preseason, is where most should have had us. That’s where we are now.

It’s not like we’re hiding two 5 star QBs on the bench.

He handled Ohio State fine last year. He just has an inconsistent streak, plain and simple. I just wish the team would go up tempo when he is struggling, he seems to play better. Everybody is down on Stanley, but I think he is still our best option to win. He just needs to play though it. In basketball, when a scorer is slumping, they don't sit him and tell him not to shoot, they tell him to keep shooting and the touch will come. Stanley will play through it like he always has. Lets not forget that the weather was not great the past two weeks either. Mega wind two weeks ago and wet and cold last week. McSorley's throwing numbers were not great last week either.

difference between nate and mcsorley, is that mcsorley makes plays at the end, when they need made. Have yet to see that from nate. He can pile up points when the pressure isn't on, but late close games he seems to choke to often.
Lets just hope we can jump out to an early lead!

I feel like the question is less WHETHER Stanley will play this Saturday, and more HOW Stanley will play this Saturday. After the worst game of his career, and a week of being the proverbial whipping boy for angry Iowa fanatics, this game may in fact be the most important of his young career. A strong win would do much to heal wounds, while another shaky performance leading to a loss would be devastating to his legacy, and likely his confidence going forward. I wish him the best, but proceed with what I would call optimistic skepticism.

I wondered whether his helmet visor was a prescription vision correction and having that out against Penn State impacted his vision. LOL!
The visor made PS defensive players look like Hawk receivers.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

It seems as though Stanley plays well when teams don't blitz much, or don't blitz effectively. But when he has consistent pressure, he seems to fold. Ohio State last year applied almost no pressure. Fabulous game from Nate. One week later, Wisconsin was after him every down, and it was an absolute disaster that rivaled the worst games of the 1973 Iowa team that went 0-11.

A similar pattern seems to be unfolding this season. No pressure: Good Nate. Consistent pressure: Bad Nate.

Of course, the O-line has major responsibility here, but the QB has to be much steadier, more poised than Nate has been so far when the O-line springs some leaks. And the fact is, Nate had receivers wide open all over the place @ PSU and consistently missed them badly, even when not pressured, because the pressure was in his head.

And unless Stanley comes out playing well @ Purdue, Mansell needs to get a shot earlier rather than later. If Nate can find some poise, the physical part will follow--footwork, arm action, and all of that. Let's hope he gets over the hump in West Lafayette.
