you can’t always get what you want!
But The Stones don't have to take a back seat to many!

Last night, the weather was picture perfect and the venue was pretty close to "sold out" with 50k attendees. Jagger is absolutely incredible as a performer. The man is a whirling dervish for 2 hours of singing, prancing, hip shaking, hand waving, arm swinging motion. Plus...his voice seems as good as ever.
Charlie Watts still tells the band what to do and when to do it...Keith Richards might be a step slower but he does a lot for the show and the fans love him....Ronnie Woods, the youthful member of the group, sported a KCRoyals ball cap given to him by Mick. But make no mistake about it......Mick is THE show.
Lots of talent back The Stones up...their saxaphonists are solid and female vocalist Lisa Fisher (filling in for Merry Clayton) blew the lid of Arrowhead with her "Gimme Shelter" solo....Woods and Jagger doing (harmonicas) in "Midnight Rambler" was awesome. Plus...the Stones do have an advantage of having many, many very recognizable rock standards...and they are smart enough to play/sing them. As a "local" bonus, Jagger and the band did "a song we used to open our blues show in 1963"....."Kansas City". After that.....the crowd was putty in Mick's hands.
I saw them in 1989 never thinking I would see them "live" again........I was wrong...and they seemed much better this time around. They are a great stadium show band.
The only downer of the evening was getting out of the parking lot. As good as The Stones were....the parking situation leaving was as bad. Getting in..no problem....leaving was a disaster. (Took about 90 minutes to get from the parking lot to the interstate.)

It's a tough premise, greatest bad ever, but for me, Beggar's Banquet thru Exile on Main Street is tough to beat. I still listen to them. Hell, I still listen to their outtakes. Give the down and dirty version of Tumbling Dice a listen before they made it for the public consumption.

I would love to see them. Should have gone when they were in Jack Trice a few years ago, but I'm pretty sure we were out of town.

They're one of the few groups that aren't a bit of an embarrassment, I think. I won't go near either of the groups touring as the Beach Boys, for example.

There is zero reason for this guy to still be alive, yet he is. I'll give them credit just for that, let alone anything they wrote and recorded.

I'm pretty sure Keith Richards' veins no longer pump blood. He's just chemicals at this point.

Keith is as good as anyone at creating memorable riffs. Love the quote (I think it was from the Sunday Morning interview) where he said his job is to inspire Mick so Mick can inspire the world.

TL;DR

They're really old and offer little these days outside of nostalgia.

There may not be anything better in the live rock world than them performing Sympathy for the Devil in an outdoor venue.

He was in Lord of the Rings?

The reason why Stones tours are still a major happening nowadays is because modern music overall sucks balls. You can take what is universally considered to be their best 20 songs of all time from their catalog and say any band active today with zero members under say 40 years old has a single solitary song as great as the Stones' 20th on that list.

I firmly believe there will never be another Rolling Stones. One whose career trajectory is somewhat in line with their accomplishments historically.

You are correct but that has plenty to do with the changes to the business model. And there are plenty of good even great young bands/artists out there they just may not be classic rock. Much more segmentation of style today.

That's just it though. I do not think there is a genre called classic rock. Classic rock is actually a melting pot (sue me) of styles. The Stones are a blues/country band, not a classic rock band.

I'm saying there will never be an artist or band that combines the sex appeal, musical chops, sales and crossover media appeal along with career popularity of a band like the Stones ever again.

They were musically relevant for I'd say 20 years...monsters. They've been "aura" relevant for 50+. These geezers actually put on a better show today than they did in their first 15.

That combo I believe will never happen again. Just think about it...they're all in their 70's and they're filling football stadiums today. I heard from a co-worker who saw them recently and he was stunned at how good they were. He's in his 30's.

Anybody think for instance Pearl Jam will be filling football stadiums 25 years from now? U2, 15 years from now?

If Led Zeppelin went out on tour for 100 dates, they'd fill 100 football stadiums, sell every damn ticket for sale...their last studio album was in the late 70's.

" Sympathy " was my favorite UNTIL Saturday night........,"Gimme Shelter" (vocal by Lisa Fisher), was absolutely the finest effort I have ever heard. The song oozes sexuality and Saturday, it was very evident. Lisa's voice was spectacular, big and sexual. In the past I have heard "Gimme" performed with Merry Clayton who does it well, but Lisa Fisher blew it up.
However, "Sympathy for the Devil" certainly did not disappoint, either. Mick wore a new cape for it!

The one thing that gets me thinking about The Stones is as solid as that particular night's performance was playing their "greatest"...they left a ton of GREAT Stone hits on the floor. A lot of the stuff that made me notice them in the first place, back in the day.

I have no desire to see U2, the Stones, or Zepplin. The music from any of those bands has never done anything for me. No disrespect to those that love the aforementioned as I know we all have different tastes, but I wouldn't pay to go see any of those bands.

IMO Mick Jagger is a unique talent. I'm not a Stones fan, but I saw him a few years ago on SNL singing This Could Be the Last Time backed by Arcade Fire. I was astonished. He blew up the building - nobody in the last 50 years can touch him.

I am a big Rolling Stones fan but there's plenty of good music nowadays, you just got to look for it.

I really like their "early" stuff....that corresponded to my HS years. "It's All Over", "Tell Me", "Time is on My Side", "Playin' With Fire", "Satisfaction", Get off My Cloud", "As Tears Go By", "Paint It Black" and "Let's Spend the Niight Together" were all released in a pretty short period of time (3 years), plus others that I can't think of at the moment. All these...before they released a lot of their "good stuff" fans recognize today.

The best part of that performance was Richard Reed Parry on guitar.

Agree. Most modern music is crap. And rap isn't even good enough to be called crap.

Yes, there are a few good artists out there.....Joe Bonamassa is fantastic....but the majority of it is junk.

Love the Stones but nowadays the backup musicians are playing everything. Mick's voice is about the only authentic part of the show anymore. Keef can't play for shit anymore.
