10 things about Christianity that Jesus would not be happy about if he returned:

1. That his vision for a transformed society, got twisted into an afterlife fantasy about heaven.

2. That a religion was formed to worship his name, instead of a movement to advance his message.

3. That the gospel says his death solved the problem of humankind's separation from God, instead of accepting that his life revealed the truth that there is no separation from God.

4. That the religion bearing his name was conceived by the theories and doctrines of Paul, instead of the truth Jesus lived and demonstrated.

5. That he was said to exclusively be God in the flesh, putting his example out of reach, rather than teaching that we all share in the same spirit that empowered his character and life.

6. That the religion that claims his name, teaches that his wisdom and teachings are the only legitimate way to know truth and God.

7. The idea that humankind stands condemned before God and deserving of Divine wrath and eternal conscious judgement, requiring the death of Jesus to fix it.

8. That people are waiting on Jesus to return to save the world and end suffering, rather than taking responsibility for saving the world and solving suffering ourselves.

9. That people think there is magical potency in uttering the name of Jesus, rather than accessing our own natural powers and capabilities to effect change.

10. That people have come to associate Jesus with church, theology, politics and power, rather than courage, justice, humanity, beauty and love.

He'd probably also wonder why he's always drawn as a white guy.

That's interesting. I sorta remember Him talking a fair bit about the latter. (And to be clear, the former as well.)
2. That a religion was formed to worship his name, instead of a movement to advance his message.
I must say, I'm not exactly sure of the Christian sect you have in mind.
3. That the gospel says his death solved the problem of humankind's separation from God, instead of accepting that his life revealed the truth that there is no separation from God.
This one is a little more interesting, and probably not susceptible to a message board resolution.
4. That the religion bearing his name was conceived by the theories and doctrines of Paul, instead of the truth Jesus lived and demonstrated.
Well again, He sorta did have a personal chat with Paul. So presumably the guy had some idea of what he was talking about. In any event, that whole ecumenical thingy is kinda good.
5. That he was said to exclusively be God in the flesh, putting his example out of reach, rather than teaching that we all share in the same spirit that empowered his character and life.
Actually, it's fully divine AND fully human. But either way, who said anything about Him not having aspirations for us?
6. That the religion that claims his name, teaches that his wisdom and teachings are the only legitimate way to know truth and God.
Well, it is sort of the nature of religions to have that sort of feature generally, but in any event, that's actually not true about Christianity.
7. The idea that humankind stands condemned before God and deserving of Divine wrath and eternal conscious judgement, requiring the death of Jesus to fix it.
Boy, are you way off on this one. Any fair Christian reading of soteriology shows a continuing story of a loving God, at least since the time of about Noah.
8. That people are waiting on Jesus to return to save the world and end suffering, rather than taking responsibility for saving the world and solving suffering ourselves.
You seem to see a lot less charitable behavior -- individual and collective -- than I do in the world. Which by the way, has continued to expand rather than contract over time.
9. That people think there is magical potency in uttering the name of Jesus, rather than accessing our own natural powers and capabilities to effect change.
Christianity doesn't entail "magic", but if you are referring to "prayer," I do think that most Christians are mature enough to know that "divine blessing" and "human intervention" can actually coexist quite nicely.
10. That people have come to associate Jesus with church, theology, politics and power, rather than courage, justice, humanity, beauty and love.
No doubt about politics and power. But at the end of the day, Christianity is not simply "philosophy." It is religion. In the words of Jaro Pelikan, the Church is always more than a school, but it cannot be less than a school.

The thing about apologetics is, it’s always best to start with a reasonably fair presentation of a mean proposition, rather than a straw man. Anyone can deal with the latter.

I think Jesus would be disappointed.
Can a HROT friend post the song Right in Two by Tool? It tells a good story.

The church is so far off from what Jesus had in mind, it's not even funny.

The shit that Christians get away with, while screaming about abortion, gay rights, or any sort of government help, is a damn joke.

F*cking hypocrites
Agree for the most part, though there are good churches out there. They just don’t make the news.

I would agree...sort of.

Take a church and have the following walk in:

A gay jesus loving couple
or
A man/woman addicted to porn, commits adultery, beats there kids.

Guess which one they would accept into church membership?

I'm probably the wrong guy to ask about this though, I am pretty bitter towards the church.

So, Jim Palmer has a different Bible than the rest of us? Interesting. I get it, Republicans have their own unique version of the Bible, so why not Jim? I mean, who needs the magisterium and teaching authority of the Church, when you’ve got the GQP and former major league pitchers to tell us how it is.

🤦‍♂️

True religion and the Bible has the power to change people. It all comes down to whether or not an individual wants to conform to God’s standards. He sets the standard of right and wrong , not any human. And There is no Grey area in the Bible’s moral teaching. Too many religions have watered down Gods standards to keep their church and their wallets full. The Bible’s teaching forces a person to look into the mirror and see whether their conduct is in harmony with the standards God has established . It’s really that simple . The real fact is that most people don’t want to change. They want someone to tell them it’s ok to do what they want in life with impunity.

Jesus said to his disciples: " A new commandment I give
to you, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if
you have love for one another." John 13:34,35

Christians are to love others with the same love Jesus has
for us. His love is unconditional, self-sacrificing, and forgiving.
Christians are failing to demonstrate the love of Christ and
have become judgmental, bigoted, selfish and unforgiving.

while I wholeheartedly agree with your take on scripture, I will add this : As followers of Christ we would never be the judge of any individual. However true Christian’s would share Gods viewpoint on sinful conduct. Never would they condone or support any conduct that stands in opposition to Gods standards of right and wrong. Too many people have started to use that crutch of”Jesus loves you no matter what” in life. Come as you are , God will accept your worship no matter what . It doesn’t work that way . We need to conform to His requirements not the other way around. That is the plain truth of it.

Ok.

@the24fan......by judgmental I mean avoiding the danger
of comparing ourselves with other people with an
arrogant attitude. When we judge others as inferior to us.
This attitude ignores the fact that God has given each one
of us different abilities and gifts to help other people.

So wht part of that is funny to you ? Disagree ? Do you set the standards of right and wrong ? I suppose if you’re an atheist than maybe you do
I think what is funny to him is that Christianity entails both justice (in your law and order sense) AND mercy (somewhat akin to the op’s sense). The point is, there are those who are imbalanced in both directions.

Of course God is merciful, but that doesn’t mean a person can sin time and time again with impunity. Once we know what God requires of us to ignore that on purpose is not deserving of mercy. This scripture in Hebrew is pretty clear:
Hebrews 10:26-For if we practice sin willfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left.

Not a lot of room for debate on that.

Just to be clear, I have no beef with Jesus, he seems like cool dude.
I think he would be like. “WTF? No, no, no! You guys got that so wrong! It’s a simple message people, how could you screw it up?!? Seriously people!!!! Or at least that’s what he would think. Wait, can god hear peoples thoughts? Do my dead relatives watch me all the time? Can they hear my thoughts? I’m getting creeped out!
