I was fishing all day Thursday and Friday and we got off the water at noon on Saturday. Got back to the house in time to watch a bit of Nebraska-Colorado and then the Iowa game and then we were right back at it. So this may be a bit spotty as I just got home on a Sunday to a house full of issues. LOL. Sorry if sloppy.

At least those guys have us on enrollment because them and their perfect coach can’t

Beat Iowa. I’m sure as Brandon and Tillman kept saying they will compete for the Big 12 Crown because they have “street cred”. LOL.

Momma always said fine something nice to say about everyone. Rose is going to be a pretty nice LB for them. Okay now I’m going to get deloused.

They had that opening drive and after that it was lights out D by the Hawks.

I can’t find one unit or one player that had a bad game on Saturday on the defensive side of the ball. eriously, every position every player was really good on defense.

AJ should have had 3 sacks today. The bad spots were awful most of the day and one cost AJ a sack because they gave Kempt the LOS when his knee was down a good ½ yard before the LOS. Regardless, AJ has 3 sacks, 2 of them caused fumbles and the other one he knocked out the QB. That’ s a bad dude.

Having said that Parker Hesse was a wrecking crew Saturday. I see why he’s on the field more.

The good news is we have depth at LB. The bad news is does Kristian Welch get his job back. Colbert was all over the field. It’s not like Welch played bad last week either.

Kind of off the wall but we have a really nice unheralded player in Chauncey Gholston. Him and Hesse can both play inside outside. What an asset. Chauncey had a great game today but again the whole D did.

Brincks got the start at DT. Reiff was really the 5th DT used after M. Nelson, Brincks, Lattimore, and Gholston..

We are now playing 4 DE’s. Usually AJ would come in to spell Hesse but now Gholston is giving A. Nelson a rest. This is such a good thing. Plus running 4 DT’s with 2 of our DE’s able to slide inside. It’s really fun watching that DL work together in so many different combos.

Our secondary was amazing. I thought it was Ojemudia’s best game as a hawkeye and he had some really solid tackles.

Several of us thought for sure Iowa would go more Nickel on Saturday. They didn’t do it once. With Colbert you basically got another Safety out there anyway. It’s a good situation to be in.

I feel like I could write a novel just on the defense.

We made no real effort to pass on 1st down. No way to sugar coat the offensive unit as a whole was not sharp. Stanley was very inaccurate on throws but then dropped a few dimes. It will have to improve.

There were many times ISU had 3 DL and 3 LBS and we couldn’t run against it.

But I would rather be 2-0 with some things that need to be cleaned up then 1-1 with the offense scoring 45 a game.

Banwart got the start and Paulsen relieved him in the 2nd quarter and then they alternated.

When we ran right our guards really struggled. We were best when we run right up the gut letting the guards go straight ahead.

When we had 3rd and 3 or less we were 100% success on 3rd down conversion. The problem is that only happened twice. When we were 3rd down and 6 or less we were 80% conversion rate. The problem with that was it only happened 5 times. Way too many 3rd and longs.

But let’s not focus on the negative. We have a team that’s 2-0 and has covered both games. We had one team where some thought a DE was going to be in our backfield all day and we had a RB where some thought was going to be running away from our LB’s all day. Neither happened. You can’t be more than 2-0 at this point.

15:-00 never saw the ref whistle ready for play but I’ve read on here that they don’t have to anymore. That’s an odd rule change if true.

Ross Reynolds with a great block to start off on 1st down

13:45 ISM is triple covered and Fant is double covered but Nate forces it quick into ISM. He had time to wait.

13:26 A. Nelson with a great bull rush.

Next play A. Nelson gets tackled by Foster.

9:30 OJ with a great tackle, love how our CB’s stick their nose in there and get physical. He looked like he got hurt on the play but he didn’t miss any time.
8:55 Hankins once again with a good tough tackle. Nieman with a missed tackle here. Took a bad angle. If this play wasn’t a screen A. Nelson would have had a sack.

8:20 Gervase was screaming for a pick but I think it was behind the line and legal.

7:35 2nd and goal watch A. Nelson. He gets hooked around the neck by the OL. Colbert really quick through the gap and shut that down as well. You can see it really well after the FG before the commercial on the replay.

6:45 4th and goal. Amani Jones is in the game. ISU was very confused on this play. Not with Jones but they had no idea what they wanted to run.

5:32 Brandon Smith is open here but Nimble Nate decides to run for the 1st down.

4:07 Wirfs one really bad block on the day. He completely whiffs.

3:00 A. Nelson pushes the tackle right into Kempt.

Next play – AJ Dropped in coverage on Nieman’s sack.

2:03 This has been discussed at length. I like the no call on these PI calls. OJ got away with one later as well.

Next play – Jackson leaves the DT completely alone creating an easy tackle for him. Not sure what he read there.

Next play – Render has the NG blocked and then slides to the right for no reason and the NG gets close to Nate forcing a quick throw.

:23 AJ should have had a sack here but the line judge gave Kempt the LOS forward progress. Bad spot.

2nd QTR
14:17 Brando says Butler dropped the ball right in his hands but replay shows Colbert tipped it causing it to wobble.

13:24 Here is a good example of what Iowa was doing when it wasn’t working. Paulsen misread it and you can see him try to come back and aslo Render got blown 3 yards into the backfield.

11:45 Wirfs, Render and Jackson all 3 great blocks.

10:35 Nate gets the ball knocked out and it was a fumble that was over ruled but if he got that ball off there was nobody within 7 yards of Fant. That didn’t happen much.

Next play – It’s 3rd and 11 and he throws a quick out to TJ but Easley was open behind him for the 1st down.

9:05 M. Nelson puts the guard on his ass. Looks like he wants to throw a punch at him. Hockaday with a great read filling the hole.

7:30 Brandon Smith has a nice block here and then on the very next play as well. On the first one Young with more of a punch to the defender than a stiff arm.

6:00 The replay shows TJ was about to make a great catch after an ISU tip but his elbows slam the turf and his helmet almost pops off.

Next play - Wirfs takes the poor ISU dude to the 3 yards line and then plants him.

5:15 Watch Hooker close on this play. I think he’s going to be a future All_American for sure.

4:42 The blew the whistle well after the clock read 0. I can’t see the ISU sideline on TV but that sure looked like it was a delay of game.

3:15 Great pass by Kempt here but AJ still impressive how quickly he gets to the QB.

2:30 Hesse doubled which doesn’t happen very often and that is what leads to Matt doing a great swim move on the Center and getting an awesome sack. Loved how he drove him into the ground and then it looks like he says something to him. ALSO, THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A THING BETWEEN A. NELSON, HESSE AND M. NELSON. WHEN THEY GET A SACK THEY SHAKE HANDS AND THEN TURN THEIR HEADS. Did it last week as well.

3rd QTR
14:15 Hesse almost gets there for another sack.

13:30 On this punt the douche for ISU was trying to drag Riley Moss into the ball which of course is illegal. Looked like Moss was going to get into it and Hooker comes running up and pushes him away. Ross comes in as well. I like this because I remember JJ a few years ago was doing the same thing and King came in and pushed him away to say we got more important things to worry about. Leave the bush league BS to ISU.

Next play – Wirfs just absolutely destroys the DT. Hockensen gets a great block as well when he blows up Rose.

12:05 ISU guy after the play throws a punch at Toren Young. This is the play where they picked up Hockensen and threw him down after the whistle.

9:25 Great diving play by Hockaday. Love how he is taking advantage of this long awaiting moment. Good for him.

6:50 Spencer Tillman with the weekly white WR stereotype plug. Groenwig “is sneaky good and a better athlete than you think he would be”

4:20 AJ with the sack, he throws Meeker here like a rag doll. OBTW he was being held while he got the sack.

1:09 The bomb to Easley that failed had so many things wrong. First as the announcers said, Nate had an easy run for the first down and also out in the flat to His right was Brandon Smith with nobody within 12 yards of him and he was past the sticks.

:10 Great run by Sargent. What a shifty back.

4th QTR
14:10 Good play by Easley saving Nate from a pick. He also hit his head pretty hard on the turf here when he landed.

13:04 Lots of bad spots but this one was exceptionally bad. I think we should point out it was a guy that had all the bad spots. The female I think took some unnecessary heat last week for calls. Not raw rawing for the better sex, just went back and watched and didn’t think she was as bad as some said she was.

10:14 This is the worst spot of the day actually. Spencer Tillman kept saying it’s where his elbow hits and Brando keeps telling him it’s where the ball is where his elbow hits. Spencer says I understand that I’m just analyzing that’s what I do. I’m like well you don’ t understand the rule and your analyzing it wrong but carry on. Loved it when you dove into the endzone against Nebraska. He was a better player than announcer.

10:02 This was a really tough catch by Fant and just a bad throw by Nate. I am confident he will get this turned around.

7:30 Wirfs with a great seal block here and Young with the heads up play to stay in bounds.

5:50 Nate with just a great throw. Is everybody relieved to see Brandon come down with one. I know I was. Could not be happier for that kid. Hopefully the light comes on now. This play Sargent with a great dive to pick up the blitz. OBTW, Nate audibled to this play. So they do audible to a pass.

That drive was what we all want from Iowa. 14 Plays and 83 yards. It was like where have you been all my life?

4:40 They throw the penalty on Hesse for roughing but why was the Guard not flagged for retaliation. He pushed Hesse down long after the flag was throw and the play was over.

2:35 Can someone please tell me how that punt formation was illegal. I think it was a lot like the fake punt we ran against OSU last year.
Next play – I didn’t like seeing this pass completion but I did like that 6 Hawkeyes were in on the tackle. They were so fun to watch all game long.

2:02 Maybe this will be a weekly thing, AJ with a late sack and strip and Gholston picks it up and returns it. This play was great for other reasons. Hesse and Colbert pancake a guy and then AJ for good measure pounces on a guy at the end of the play. He’s a beast.

I wonder where his elbow landed. :)

He shall heretofore be forever known as Spencer "Elbow" Tillman AFAIC

MNelson's sack was a solid back flattener, don't know how Kempt held on to the ball there.

CBs handled Hakeem All-World Butler all day. Agree- OJ had a great game.

Hooker might have a decision to make early next year if he keeps playing this well.

Easley is still MIA, hope he gets involved soon.

BF is intent on using Brady Ross in the pass game - more FB targets in first two games then a normal full season.

I'll say it again: Reece Morgan is solid gold. DL is the crown jewel of this year's team

Excellent detailed work. BTN could not have done better.

Very well done. I was just looking at numbers from the game. Was curious about how many drops we had. Stanley def needs to clean some things up and place the ball better for a better chance for YAC but his day really wasn't as bad as some may be making it out. Add the two drops to his completions and his percentage would've been 64% that's really not to bad. Hopefully the passing game is close to starting to click. Nate seems to me to be aiming the ball instead of trusting himself and letting it fly freely.

About the runs to the right, there were several where we chose to run to the short side of the field (which I think was always or almost always right) and those plays usually went nowhere.

The play calling certainly wasn't bad on Saturday, but on some of those short side runs into a stacked front that is overplaying the zone scheme, they just weren't set up to succeed.......
