Was going to watch the game with other Iowa fans at a bar in Indianapolis but the bar was a 20 minute drive away and I was in a work car so just decided to watch it by my lonesome in my hotel room.

For me the best play of the game was Brandon Smith’s sports center highlight catch. This is obviously what people are seeing in practice.

Saw a lot of players out there and that’s a good thing in a double digit road win.

Nate was outstanding and then brutal. But in the end he was far better than he was worse.

It seemed we had a game plan to kick the ball short and get Minnesota to try returning but they wouldn’t bite on that.

Dalton Fergurson started at RG but split time with Cole Barnwart

it’s not like they haven’t been flagging that routinely in college football.

Amani Jones played pretty well in replacing Jack

Lots of nickel today, Stone played a lot. On obvious passing downs we would go dime and Welch would be the lone LB.

We just struggled on 1st down all day and that was throwing and running.

Until the last 6 1st down plays, we were were 50/50 run pass on 1st down.

We were better in 3rd and long today then on 1st down. Not often Iowa can say that.

The play by play guy had a good call late in the first when Iowa got a defensive penalty for 5 yards. He said that would be Minnesota’s longest play of the game so far.

2ND week in a row we just cannot run the ball to the right.

We started to run better in the 2nd half but we never could get it going in the run game.

Another sweet special teams fake. Credit to Levar Woods.

Josh Turner was in on special teams so Riley Moss has just passed him by. He got picked on quite a bit today but he also shinned. He didn’t have a lot of safety help either. Not bad for a walk on kid that was barely recruited. Like Brian Ferentz said, “We live off of those guys.”

Moss was targeted just over half of minnesota's pass attempts. stats at very bottom.

Love the length of Brents. Easy to like the future of Iowa defense.

Sideline chick said after Moss’s 2nd pick that Hankins ran up to him and said one more and you get a hat trick. I love the team attitude there.

Stanley’s first 5 completions to 5 different players.

Iowa obviously looking to get the WR’s more involved and it’s clear that worked.

Mason spent most of the game talking about how bad Stanley and moss were playing and when he wasn’t he was talking about how Iowa couldn’t run the ball. In the end, Stanley was over 300 yards 4 TDs, Moss had 2 picks and Iowa won the game by 17 and scored 48.

Absolutely sucks losing Hockaday and now Jones in the 1st half next week on what was just a bs call

Iowa has won 13 of the last 17 against Minnesota

1ST QUARTER
15:00 WE START THE GAME IN NICKEL. COLBERT AND HOCKADAY AT LB, GENO STONE COMES IN AT SAFETY AND HOOKER MOVES TO THE 3RD CB SLOT ALONG WITH MOSS AND BRENTS

14:16 WE BLITZ WITH HOOKER, AJ IS NOW KNOWN IN THE BIG 10 AS MINNESOTA BRINGS IN A TE TO CHIP HIM. ANTHONY NELSON JUST OVER MATCHING THEIR RT WHO WAS HOLDING BUT IT DIDN’T HELP. ALSO, KRISTIAN WELCH IN AT LB FOR HOCKADAY ON THIS PLAY AND HE BLITZED AS WELL.

13:35 AT FIRST I THOUGHT HOOKER IS RETURNING PUNTS DUE TO LAST WEEKS MISCUES BY KG. BUT KG WAS ACTUALLY DEEPER ON THAT PUNT RETURN, HOOKER WAS UP IN CASE OF A SHORTER PUNT.

13;29 IOWA 1ST PLAY FROM SCRIMMAGE, EASLEY IS WIDE OPEN BECAUSE OLB STAYED INSIDE BECAUSE FANT AND HOCKENSEN STAYED IN THAT AREA.

12:34 STANLEY PASS TO SMITH, NOTHING FLASHY BUT SMITH WITH A NICE STIFF ARM SHOVING THE CB TO THE GROUND

12:05 3RD ROSS REYNOLDS FALLS DOWN ALLOWING D TO MAKE THE PLAY

10:00 THEIR LB TRIES TO COME UP AND STOP IKM AND IKM MOWS HIM OVER AND NATE WITH AN EASY PITCH AND CATCH FOR 15.

8:47 ANTHONY NELSON FIGHTS OFF DOUBLE TEAM AND MAKES STOP FOR NO GAIN, GREAT SUPPORT FROM HOOKER AND STONE. 3 LBS NOW IN FOR IOWA WITH WADE REPLACING STONE

7:55 GREAT READ BY PARKER HESSE, SAW THE SCREEN THE WHOLE WAY.

6:00 REALLY CLOSE TO ILLEGAL FORWARD PASS HERE ON NATE BUT HE DOES GET RID OF IT WITH PART OF HIS BODY STILL AT THE LOS. ISM WITH A NICE FLIP IN THE ENDZONE. NOT SURE WHAT MINNESOTA WAS DOING HERE AS NICK EASLEY WAS ALL ALONE AS WELL ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE FIELD. GREAT PLAY BY NATE BUYING TIME AND FINDING THE OPEN MAN. SARGENT WITH JUST ENOUGH OF A BLOCK THE BLITZING LB TO GIVE NATE A CHANCE. ALARIC JACKSON PUTS THE DE ON HIS ASS RIGHT OFF THE BAT ON THIS PLAY.,

5:48 MINNESOTAS 3RD POSSESSION AND AS IT HAS BEEN GHOLSTON AND AJ GO IN AT DE

5:04 MINNESOTA WITH A 1ST DOWN BUT GREAT HUSTLE BY GHOLSTON WHO WAS RUSHING AS A DT TO GET BACK DOWNFIELD AND MAKE THE TACKLE. ALSO OJEMUDA IN ON THIS PLAY.

NEXT PLAY, RT GRABS AJ’S SHOLD ER PADS AND PULLS HIM DOWN.

4:00 HOCKADAY MAKES THE TACKLE. NOTHING LOOKS WRONG BUT ON TV THEY GO AWAY FROM IT AND THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW AMANI JONES IS IN AT MLB. THEY NEVER MENTIONED IT UNTIL THE SIDELINE GIRL MENTIONED IT.

3:00 MOSS GIVES UP A LONG PASS BUT HE’S RIGHT THERE WHERE HE NEES TO BE. WR JUST WENT UP AND GOT IT. A FEW PLAYS LATER MOSS GIVES UP THE TD BUT ONCE AGAIN HE’S RIGHT THERE HE JUST GOT OUT JUMPED FOR THE BALL.

:56 KICK OFF, NICE RETURN BY ISM AND AUSTIN KELLY AND DEVONTE YOUNG TEAM UP ON A GUY AND CRUSH HIM. THIS POSSESSION COLE BANWART COMES INTO THE GAME AT RG

2ND QTR
14:15 HOOKER BEING HELD PRETTY BADLY HERE ALLOWING RB TO GET 11 YDS. 2ND REPLAY SHOWS IT EVEN WORSE

NEXT PLAY – 2ND BLITZ OF THE GAME AND SAME RESULT, HOOKER BLITZES AND ANTHONY NELSON WITH A SICK MOVE TO GET THE SACK.

NEXT PLAY – ANTHONY NELSON BEATS 2 GUYS FOR THIS SACK.

NEXT PLAY – SHOULD HAVE BEEN A 3RD STRAIT SACK FOR IOWA, HIS KNEE WAS DOWN BEFORE HE LET GO OF THE BALL AND GHOLSTON SHOULD HAVE HAD THE SACK. 2ND REPLAY YOU CAN SEE IT EVEN THOUGH MASON SAID HE GOT RID OF IT.

11:49 ROSS WITH A GOOD BLOCK HERE TO GET SARGENT SOME RUNNING ROOM.

10:15 WE DIDN’T HAVE MANY GREAT RUNS BUT THIS WAS ONE OF THEM. SARGENT FOR 11 YARDS BUT BANWART AT THE END OF THAT CRUSHING GUY OUT OF BOUNDS

8:35 FANT TRIPLE COVERED

6:06 3RD AND GOAL AND I THINK IOWA THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A TD BECAUSE NATE NEVER LOOKED ANYWHERE ELSE. NOBODY ELSE WAS EVEN OPEN BUT HE THREW IT A BIT TOO FAR FOR TJ.

NEXT PLAY – SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET FAKE FG. LOVE THE MOTION FROM AJ COMING THE OTHER WAY AFTER THE SNAP TO FREEZE MINNY’S D. DARE I SAY MIGUEL LOOKED LIKE A RB ON THAT PLAY. GIVE HIM THE BALL KIRK. JUST A GREAT PLAY DESIGN. GREAT PITCH BY JACKSON SHUBBERT OBTW

4:12 AJ IN ON THE QB LIKE A BLUR. QB THREW IT UP FOR GRABS, THOUGHT BRENTS WAS GOING TO HAVE A SPECTACULAR PICK BUT HIM AND GERVASE HAD THE SAME IDEA.

NEXT PLAY – THAT FG HAD WHAT THE LATE GREAT AL MCGUIRE WOULD CALL FRENCH PASTRY. THOUGHT FOR SURE THAT WAS NO GOOD UNTIL IT SPUN INSIDE AT THE LAST SECOND.

3:15 ONE OF THE BAD THROWS BY NATE TODAY. HE HAS FANT STREAKING PROBABLY FOR A TD HERE BUT THROWS IT BEHIND HIM AND ALLOWS D TO KNOCK IT DOWN.

3:00 HOOKER ANOTHER BLITZ HERE AND THIS IS WHERE HOCKADAY GETS HURT. NOT MUCH OF A PLAY, HIM AND STONE WITH A GREAT READ ON THE QUICK THROW AND YOU CAN SEE JACK LIMPING RIGHT AFTER THE PLAY.

2:08 PRETTY GOOD COVERAGE BY RILEY ON THE FAKE PUNT. PLAY TO WIN FLECK. LOL

1:55 THEY CALL HOLDING ON BRANDON SMITH, ALL HE DID WAS BLOCK THE CB AND PANCAKE HIM. NOT SURE HOW YOU CALL THAT HOLDING

1:47 GREAT READ BY NATE ON THE BLITZ, QUICK DUMP OFF TO IKM FOR 25 YDS

NEXT PLAY, SWEET MOVE BY NICK EASLEY ON THE LB TO GET OPEN FOR THE TD.

1:35 MONSTER SACK BY GHOLSTON, FOUGHT OFF A DOUBLE TEAM TO DO IT AS WELL.

NEXT PLAY, HOOKER HAD BEEN PLAYING REALLY WELL AT NICKEL CB BUT GETS BEAT BADLEY ON THIS ONE FOR 52 YARDS. COLBERT SHOWING SOME SPEED RUNNING THE WR DOWN FROM BEHIND.

NEXT PLAY, HOOKER BLITZES AND RILEY MOSS WITH GREAT COVERAGE AND THE PICK

NEXT PLAY, NOT SURE WHAT NATE WAS DOING HERE BUT IT WASN’T A GOOD IDEA. JUST A HORRIBLE PASS BY HIM.

:56 ANTHONY NELSON ALMOST GETS THERE FOR THE SACK BUT TYLER JOHNSON PUTS A SICK MOVE ON HOOKER TO GET FREE FOR THE TD.

3RD QTR
13:52 JACKSON WITH A DOMINATING BLOCK 10 YARDS DOWN FIELD

NEXT PLAY – ONE OF THE SICKEST CATCHES I’VE EVER SEEN BY A HAWKEYE. BRANDON SMITH HAS ARRIVED. NICE BLITZ PICK UP BY COLE BANWART AS WELL.

11:00 HOOKER GETS SUCKED IN GIVES UP CONTAINMENT AS WELL AS THE FIRST DOWN. LOOKED LIKE HE GOT HURT BUT HE WAS OKAY.

9:05 GREAT PLAY BY JULIUS BRENTS HERE TO STRIP THAT BALL OUT. IT WAS A GREAT THROW AND CATCH BUT HE NEVER GAVE UP ON IT.

8:20 NATE WANTED TO GO DEEP TO ISM HERE BUT JACKSON GOT COMPLETELY BEAT BY THE DE CAUSING THE FUMLBE. ANOTHER GIFTED TD TO THE GOPHERS.

7:36 WELCOME BACK ISM TO THE KICK OFF RETURN TEAM. HE MAKES A DIFFERENCE. BRADY ROSS WITH A MONSTER BLOCK RIGHT AT THE 20 YD LINE. THEN AT THE 35 YARD LINE AMANI BLOWS UP A WOLUD BE TACKLER.

NEXT PLAY – HOCKENSEN DESTROYS HIS MAN FREEING UP IKM FOR 15 YDS

7:07 THIS WAS A BIG PROBLEM TODAY. BRADY ROSS RUNS RIGHT BY 2 GUYS AND IKM GETS BLOWN UP.

6:28 3RD AND LONG AND NATE WITH A BULLET TO TJ. HE HAD IKM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD ALL ALONE BUT NOT SURE HE WOULD HAVE MADE THE 1ST DOWN

1:05 WHAT A PLAY BY AMANI JONES, ATTACKED THE GAP AND BLEW UP THE WILDCAT FOR A LOSS.

:33 GREAT PLAY BY HOOKER ON SINGLE COVERAGE, JONES WAS COMING ON THE BLITZ LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL.

NEXT PLAY – FLY SWEEP TO ISM AND HOCKENSEN WITH A BLOCK THAT KEPT GOING OFF CAMERA

4TH QUARTER
14:48 OUR LONG SNAPPER JACKSON SHUBBERT IN ON THE TACKLE

NEXT PLAY BRENTS WITH GREAT COVERAGE AND A GREAT PICK. HE’S GOING TO BE SPECIAL.

13:10 WHAT A GREAT THROW BY NATE JUST A DROP BY NICK EASLEY

12:55 AMANI WITH THE SACK. ANTHONY WAS ALMOST THERE FOR A ½ SACK. GREAT COVERAGE DOWN FIELD

3:10 IKM DIDN’T APPEAR TOO HAPPY ABOUT GOING INTO CONCUSSION PROTOCOL

NEXT PLAY INCREDIBLE PLAY DESIGN. WATCH HOCKENSEN, HE’S IN BLOCKING UNTIL HE RELEASES AND NOBODY GOES WITH HIM. WEITING WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE AND EVERY GOPHER IN THE BACKFIELD WENT WITH HIM.

1:30 DREW COOK IN AT TE AND GETS A GOOD BLOCK TO HELP SARGENT GET THE TD

:49 AMANI WITH A GREAT HIT. IT’S A BS CALL BUT IT’S BEEN CALLED A LOT THIS YEAR. IT’S ALMOST LIKE THE REFS HAVE TO THROW THE FLAG IF THE HIT IS TOO HARD.

NEXT PLAY – AJ DAMN NEAR GETS THE SACK, MOSS WITH BLANKET COVERAGE AND STONE GETS THE PICK.

I’LL BE IN ATTENDANCE IN BLOOMINGTON NEXT WEEK. REALLY CURIOUS HOW WE GO AT LB IN THE 1ST HALF. GUESSING WELCH AT MLB.

As always, thanks Heater.

Agree with positive comments on Brandon Smith. The increased confidence is apparent. The receiver group is making good strides.

Minnesota LB unit might be the best in the B10. When they line-up Coughlin as rush DE on passing downs, havoc usually ensues.

Running the wildcat with TE Seth Green has been productive for MN, Green is a big and talented guy and a former HS QB (that Iowa recruited). They do not throw him the ball -at all. I have no idea why they don't. Running the wildcat at MN is not going to get him drafted.

As the game progressed and the running game mostly sputtered, I kept hoping to see more rushes from Toren Young. No offense to IKM or Sargent but when the Hawks are in short yardage situations or in the red zone, especially inside the 5, Young is the bulldozer you want running the ball IMO.

I get the feeling that the coaches initial game plan meeting vs. Gophers earlier this week ended with this bullet point: get Hockenson a TD this week.

They still have high hopes for Annexstad and he is just a freshman but his deep balls are atrocious - at best, floating jump balls. He now has 6 INT in his first two B10 games, I have a feeling that he is going to give Fleck a lot of sleepless nights the rest of the season.

Not that it's a huge deal but hes actually got 5 because 1 of those interceptions from yesterday was by the wildcat guy green

NEXT PLAY, HOOKER HAD BEEN PLAYING REALLY WELL AT NICKEL CB BUT GETS BEAT BADLEY ON THIS ONE FOR 52 YARDS. COLBERT SHOWING SOME SPEED RUNNING THE WR DOWN FROM BEHIND.

Iowa was in zone defense on this play, so not sure I'd say Hooker got burned. He had initial coverage on the WR and then passed him off to the safety. The ball found the WR before the safety could get there.
