I will say going into this game was the most confident I have been in Iowa against a ranked team since WIsconsin last year. I don't mind getting my heart broke though.
Did Iowa special teams come up big time in the first half or what?. Daffney, Moss, Recinos, Rastetter, ISM and all the blocking that went with that, you name it, just dominating. I’m just going to say this once thought to coach Woods. Get Recinos the DAMN BALL! Lol.

Sloppy ugly game on both teams but they made more plays. We had chances to win but we just didn’t make the plays that were there to be made. I thought the D and special teams played well enough to win. The offense had problems other than Nate.

Nate was had a rough day and there is no other real way to say it. He is and will be better. He made some big passes and a good run on 3rd and long down the stretch but way too inconsistent today. Who he did out perform were the idiots that couldn’t wait to flock to this site to call him garbage, loser, awful, etc. Nobody feels worse than Nate Stanley and the people riding him need to get over it. True colors show after loses and we got some people that need to take a step away IMO and it’s just my opinion. Okay, I’m off my soap box.

McShay was getting pissed and saying childish things like these are middle school passes he’s missing. I truly believe this was because at the beginning of the show he was being credited with being one of the first to realize Nate’s talents. As the game went on McShay was getting embarrassed and was taking it personally.

Fant 0 targets in the 1st half and only 1 through 3 quarters.

I thought Sargent played like a warrior today and has probably earned more reps with that performance.

Really happy for Geno Stone getting a pick 6 against his dream school.

Iowa with only 82 yards of offense in the first half.

At halftime I heard Jesse Palmer doing highlights on Iowa St and said Hakeem Butler has had a great year and nobody has been able to cover him. Um, I’d beg to differ there Jesse, 3 catches 38 yards against Iowa.

The turnovers are really killing Iowa’s defensive numbers. 12 turnovers on the year have lead to 7 TD’s.

Once again, Iowa is better on 3rd and long than they are on 3rd and short.

Seth Benson got some action on kick off returns and had a nice block on ISM’s long return

1st Quarter
FOR WHATEVER REASON MY RECORDER MISSED THE FIRST DEFENSIVE SERIES AND THEN THE BLOCKED PUNT.

13:55 IF ONLY NATE COULD HAVE PASSED LIKE THIS ALL DAY. GREAT THROW. BEST PART OF THIS PLAY FOR ME WAS NATE WEITING HAD FALLED DOWN BUT WAS HUSTLING AND GOT BACK UP AND ENDED UP FALLING ON THE BALL.

12:05 HAVEN’T SEEN MUCH OF THIS, KELLY GETS UP AND STARTS SHIFTING TO THE RIGHT, NOT 1 PENN ST LB FOLLOWED HIM, THEY KEYED ON IKM THE WHOLE TIME.

10:20 3RD AND GOAL, NATE TRIES FOR EASLEY AND MISSES. PENN ST DEFENDER FELL DOWN AND HOCKENSEN WAS WIDE OPEN TO THE RIGHT. PLUS A LITTLE SURPRISED NOAH FANT WASN’T ON THE FIELD.

NEXT PLAY: MIGUEL SPORTING GREEN SHOES. MAYBE HE ALWAYS HAS. ALSO, ONCE AGAIN A DEFENDER LEAPS OVER WIRFS. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN 1ST AND GOAL BUT THEY DIDN’T CALL IT.

6:15 HOCKENSEN WITH A GREAT HURDLE AND A GREAT PLAY BY NATE HERE. AT THIS POINT I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST GOING TO BE OUR DAY ESPECIALLY AFTER TWO FUMBLES AND WE GOT BOTH OF THEM BACK.

5:27 JUST HATS OFF TO LEVAR WOODS AND ALL OF SPECIAL TEAMS FOR ONCE AGAIN BEING INNOVATIVE. WHAT A WILLIE MAYES/DAVE CASPER TYPE CATCH FROM BRINCKS.

NEXT PLAY: RIGHT HERE I THOUGH WE HAD THIS GAME IN THE BAG. DAFFNEY WITH A DOMINATING TACKLE ON THE KICKOFF AND IT WAS JUST GOING TO BE OUR DAY. IT WAS A LOT OF DOWNHILL FROM THIS MOMENT.

NEXT PLAY: THEIR RIGHT TACKLE TAKING A PLAY OUT OF THE WISCONSIN PLAYBOOK. HE STARTS JUST BEFORE THE SNAP. THEY GET A NICE LONG RUN HERE AND IT WAS MAINLY BECAUSE BOTH LATTIMORE AND REIFF WERE IN THE SAME GAP. SOMEONE SCREWED UP.

3:00 AFTER GETTING PUSHED AROUND THE 2ND TEAM DEFENSIVE LINE IS REPLACED BY THE 1ST TEAM DEFENSIVE LINE.

1:05 IOWA CALLS TIMEOUT AND I’M NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED BUT BRENTS WAS IMMEDIATELY WAVIGN THINGS OFF AND I’M NOT SURE IF THAT WAS HIM OR THE COACHES YELLING IT TO HIM.

:35 TD PASS HERE BY MCSORELY AND IT LOOKS LIKE GERVASE IS TELLING MOSS HE SHOULD HAVE HAD HIM. NOT REALLY SURE.

2ND QTR
15:00 CB ON EASLEY BLITZES AND EASLEY CONTINUES HIS ROUTE DEEP. WOULD THINK HE SHOULD CUT THAT ROUTE OFF AND GIVE NATE AN EASIER READ.

14:00 ANNOUNCERS POINTED THIS OUT BUT COLBERT LINES UP OVER CENTER FORCING THE GUARD/CENTER TO HAVE TO BLOCK HIM, HE BACKS OFF AND OJEMUDIA BLITZES CLEANELY. GREAT BLITZ DESIGN.

13:35 PENN ST KICKS OFF AFTER SAFETY AND KRISTIAN WELCH IS BACK ON KCIK RETURN. I THOUGHT HE GOT HURT AND THAT’S WHY HOCKADAY WAS PLAYING MLB.

12:15 THE PLAY THAT WILL MAKE US ALL CRINGE FOR A WHILE. SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PLAY CALL, PLAY FAKE BY STANLEY, BLOCK AND RELEASE BY HOCKENSEN AND THE BALL SAILS PAST HIM BY 3 OR 4 YARDS. NBODY WAS WITHIN 10 YARDS OF HIM IT WAS AN EASY TD.

12:04 FERGURSON JUST GETS BEAT INSIDE FOR THE SACK

10:00 GREAT READ BY AJ ON THE QB OPTION. GOT A LITTLE VIOLENT AT THE END OF THAT PLAY AS WELL.

8:40 RARELY CALLED BUT PENN ST WITH A PUSH OFF ON RILEY MOSS. HATE THAT IT’S NOT CALLED AS FREQUENTLY AS WHEN THE DB GETS TOO CLOSE TO A WR.

7:05 NATE’S FIRST PICK. YOUNG WITH A GOOD BLITZ PICK UP AND EASLEY WASN’T QUITE TO THE SPOT. GOOD READ BY THE CB GUARDING SMITH. IF SMITH TOOK THAT ROUTE DEEPER THAT’S NOT A PICK. DON’T’ GET ME WRONG IT’S NATE’S BAD THROW. GOOD HUSTLE BY TRISTAN TO FORCE THE FUMBLE.

6:45 SETH BENSON AND WELCH WITH DOULBE TEAM FOR ABOUT 10 YARDS TO SPRING ISM ON THE KICK RETURN. I’M SURE HE STILL LEADS THE NATION IN KICK RETURNS.

NEXT PLAY: AUSTIN KELLY WITH A GOOD BLOCK AND SARGENT CONTINUES TO BREAK TACKLES.

4:37 IS THAT A LITTLE NATE KEADING FIRE I SEE IN MIGUEL AFTER THE LONG FG IN HORRIBLE CONDITIONS. HE WAS FIRED UP. I KNOW @rivercityjazzmanSAYS HE IS MENTORING MIGUEL. LOVE IT. HEY POPS, HOW FAR WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN GOOD FROM. I’M GUESSING ANOTHER 5 YARDS?

3:15 WAS THIS TARGETING ON PENN ST #6? LOOKS LIKE MAYBE HE TRIED TO TURN HIS HEAD AWAY BUT HE GETS SARGENT RIGHT IN THE HELMET.

:50 NOT SURE IF WAS CROWD NOISE OR WHAT BUT RENDER JUST SNAPS THE BALL AND NATE WASN’T READY. VERY SLOPPY GAME OBVIOUSLY BY THE OFFENSE.

NEXT PLAY: I DON’T MIND GOING FOR IT AND TRUSTING YOUR DEFENSE HERE. IT LOOKED ON TV LIKE MANSELL HAD HOCKENSEN OPEN. I CAN’T SEE IF THERE WAS A SAFETY NEAR BY THAT WOULD HAVE CLOSED THE GAP THERE BUT AT LEAST ON TV IT LOOKED THAT WAY. ON THE REPLAY I’M GUESSING #26 WAS IN THE AREA.

3RD QTR
14:54 DECENT BLOCK HERE BY REYNOLDS INITIALLY BUT SARGENT WITH JUST A TOUGH RUN.

12:30 HOW OFTEN DOES PHIL PARKER GO ZERO SAFETIES DEEP WHEN IT’S NOT DIRE TO GET THE STOP? WE HAVE BOTH SAFETIES ON THE LOS AND HOCKADAY IS THE ONLY GUY BACK, HE GUESSED WRONG AND MCSORELY IS OFF TO THE RACES.

11:45 FANT WITH A GOOD CLEAR OUT BUT JUST STOP AND APPRECIATE THE EFFORT OF SARGENT ON THIS RUN.

11;05 GRIESE CAUGHT IT BUT HOCKENSEN GOT AWAY WITH A FALSE START HERE

9:35 FANT WAS 1 ON 1 DEEP AND COULDN’T TELL IF HE WAS PULLING AWAY BUT NATE HAD EASLEY UNDERNEATH FOR A 1ST DOWN BUT AS WAS OFTEN THE CASE HE JUST MISSED HIM. BRANDON SMITH WAS OPEN AS WELL.

6:50 ALARIC JACKSON JUST GETS DESTROYED BY DE HERE. NOT ALARICS BEST EFFORT.

5:35 AJ COMPLETELY BIT ON THE FAKE HERE. AFTER THIS PLAY ONCE AGAIN THE 2ND STRING DL IS REPLACED BY THE 1ST STRING.

5:00 3RD AND LONG AND PHIL ELECTS TO KEEP 1ST STRING OUT THERE. NELSON GETS THE SACK

3:25 3RD AND LONG AND NATE WITH A BULLET TO SMITH BUT GREAT EFFORT BY BRANDON TO DIVE FOR THE 1ST DOWN

1:35 I DIDN’T CATCH THIS BUT GRIESE DID. EASLEY STOPS HIS ROUTE AND GOES BACK RIGHT INTO THE ROUTE WHERE ISM WAS AND BLEW THAT PLAY UP.

:46 IOWA WITH 9 ON THE LOS AND HOOKER GETS BEAT AND MCSORELY MAKES US PAY. GRIESE WAS SAYING STONE SHOULD HAVE MADE THAT PLAY BUT LOOKS LIKE WAS JUST A BIT LATE.

4TH QUARTER
15:00 AJ AGAIN BURNED ON THE FAKE

14:15 #87 RUNS FULL SPEED INTO COLBERT AND YOU CAN HEAR THE PADS POP AND IT HURT HIS SHOULDER AND COLBERT WAS PRETTY PUMPED UP ABOUT IT

13:25 GRIESE TALKING ABOUT MCSORELYS TOUGHNESS AND HOW IT WON’T BE DENIED. AND THEN HE FUMBLES THE NEXT PLAY. HOCKADAY REALLY QUICK ON THE REACTION THERE. ON THE REPLAY YOU CAN SEE MCSORELY PULL THE BALL BACK AND THEN DROP IT.

12:57. NOW DON’T GET IT TWISTED I’M NOT SAYING HE PLAYED GREAT, BUT THIS IS A GREAT THROW BY NATE. BACKED UP ON YOUR OWN 5, CROWD IS LOUD AND HE THROWS A DIME TO TJ FOR THE 1ST DOWN ON 1ST AND 15. THIS IS THE PLAY WHERE NATE HIT HIS THUMB

12:18 ANOTHER DIME TO FANT IN TIGHT COVERAGE. IT’S THERE, HE’S JUST GOT TO GET MORE CONSISTENT.

NEXT PLAY: HE HAS FANT WIDE OPEN AND MISSES HIM

10:48 WHAT A GREAT PLAY BY MATT NELSON, STANDS UP THE GUARD, GETS PENETRATION AND TACKLES SANDERS FOR A LOSS.

NEXT PLAY: SO HAPPY FOR GENO STONE WITH THE PICK 6. RIGHT AFTER THEY SHOW JAMES FRANKLIN THEY SHOW BIG BEN IN THE STANDS.

NEXT PLAY: THE ONLY NEGATIVE ON THE SPECIAL TEAMS ALL DAMN DAY. NICE RETURN AND THE D HELD SO ONLY GAVE UP A FG HERE. PROBLEM APPEARD TO BE SPACING WITH DAFFNEY MERRIWEATHER AND BEYER. THEN IT LOOKED LIKE TURNER OVER RAN IT. FINALLY OJ MISSED A TACKLE AND ALLOWED HIM 15 MORE YARDS.

9:15 GREAT PLAY BY BRENTS FIGHTING OFF THE WR AND MAKING A TACKLE FOR LOSS, GERVASE FORCED HIM RIGHT INTO BRENTS

NEXT PLAY: AJ IS NOT RUSHING, HE’S CONTAINIG AND IT WORKED. MCSORELY ASSUMED HE COULD JUST SNEAK OUT TO THE LEFT BUT AJ WAS STANDING RIGHT THERE

7:50 NOAH DON’T REALLY BREAK A LOT OF TACKLES BUT HE DOES HERE AND THEN JUST PULLS AWAY FROM THE SAFETY.

6:10 GREAT BLOCK BY WEITING WHO NOT ONLY KNOCKED OUT HIS GUY BUT PUSHED HIM INTO A DIFFERENT GUY AS WELL AND SARGENT WAS DOWN THE SIDELINES.

4:55 BAD SNAP BY RENDER AND NATE I THINK HAD SOME TIME BUT THREW IT AWAY.

NEXT PLAY: ANOTHER GREAT PLAY BY SARGENT. HAS TO GET MORE PLAYING TIME NOW I WOULD THINK.

NEXT PLAY: NATE’S HIT AS HE THROWS BUT GROENWIG HAS 2 STEPS ON HIS MAN IN THE ENDZONE

3:30 IT’S JUST A PLAY THAT WILL LIVE ON FOREVER. SO MANY WOULD’VE SHOULD’VE COULD’VE HERE. STANLEY’S FAULT, FANT’S FAULT, COACHES FAULT? DOESN’T MATTER. NICK SCOTT WAS THE ONLY ONE LOOKING FOR THE BALL.

1:02 3RD AND LONG AND NATE WITH A BULLET TO FANT. GREAT CATCH BY NOAH AS WELL, WASN’T EASY.

:40 REALLY DIDN’T THINK THEY WERE GOING TO OVERTURN THAT BUT I CAN’T HONESTLY SAY I THOUGHT IT WAS THE WRONG CALL. GREAT EFFORT BY TJ REGARDLESS.

NEXT PLAY: NATE WITH REALLY GOOD EFFORT TO GET BEHOND THE STICKS

NET PLAY: HE GOES TO FANT THERE BUT I WOULD HAVE LIKED HIM TO THROW TO SMITH RIGHT AT THE SIDELINES.

:07 WIRFS GETS BEAT BADLEY AND NATE DID EVERYTHING HE COULD TO GET IT TO TRISTAN. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN UNFORTUNATE WAY TO END THE GAME BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE RIGHT CALL. THAT WAS TARGETING. THAT’S BEEN CALLED ALL YEAR BUT IT WOULD BE HARD TO CALL THAT AT THE END.

This would have been much more fun had we won, but I thought I would see where we are this year compared to last year.
STATS AFTER 8 GAMES LAST YEAR COMPARED TO THIS YEAR.
2017 RUSHING – 1,046 YARDS, AKRUM WADLEY WITH 643

Next week will be the first game I will not be watching live this year as I will be fishing in a remote area. Still working on location (not my boat) so I can get a signal. Sounds like a losing battle but I'm trying. Last game I was fishing for was Ohio State last year and they haven't lost a game that I have been fishing during since Northern Illinois Labor Day 2013 not that it has anything to do with the outcome, just some FYI. Go Hawks.

There were a few plays where I thought our safeties were either out of position or in a designed spot and the defense guessed and schemed wrong.

Before PSU's first TD, you could tell they were gonna look to go to the middle of the field. I think it was a 4th down play too. Hooker was just behind the receiver, but proactive thinking says shade to the middle. I'd have to go back and watch the play to see if we had anyone in the middle there or if it was Hooker defending 1 on 1, but it was very apparent pre-snap we needed someone there and just didn't have it defended.

The TD pass was a bad read by Gervase. He should've been the deepest man and stepped up to cover the underneath receiver who would've ran right into the path of one of our other DBs (sorry for no names.....I'm going back and forth in my mind on whether I should delete it from memory and assume it never happened, just like the Wisconsin game......) If Gervase stays deep, he is at least there to make a play.

On McSorley's TD run, a other play where we needed a safety and for whatever reason we brought everyone up. No idea what we were thinking on that one.

Another thing I want to look at is our rushing game inside the red zone and 10 yr line. I'm interested to see how many rushing TDs we have inside that area. Or heck even how many times we've run.

Also, nobody deserves a targeting call more than #6 for PSU. The guy leads with his helmet and eyes down every time.

On McSorley's TD run, a other play where we needed a safety and for whatever reason we brought everyone up. No idea what we were thinking on that one.

It was an aggressive defensive play that was counter to "bend don't break", and it broke. Someone missed an assignment, or couldn't get through a block, and there was no one else to makeup for it.

35 red-zone appearances
22 TDs - 9 rush, 13 pass
Nice. Thanks. We also have 8 field goals made in the red zone.

Our rush TD numbers in the RZ unfortunately rank pretty low in the Big Ten, however, we are first in RZ passing TDs.....so we got that going for us, which is nice.

Iowa does also lead the conference in sacks allowed, which is a tremendous improvement over last year. However, the flip side to that is that we have seen Stanley get rid of some balls too quickly, most likely to avoid taking a sack and that's led to either missed targets or interceptions.

It's that odd saying that sometimes it actually is better to eat a sack, than risk a turnover. Unfortunately that's kind of been the trade-off with Nate this year. Fewer sacks, but more turnovers, and his accuracy is wavering more.

Btw, Purdue leads the conference in redzone defense........of course they do, as we go to play them when our offense is hitting its annual mid-conference season slumber.

Another thing, Stanley was 8/14 for 108 yards, 7.71 ypa, 1 INT in the 4th quarter with Fant, Hockenson and Smith in most plays, not counting the final drive. Certainly better than the rest of the game. The rest of of the game, mostly without those three, 10/35 for 97 yards 2.77 ypa.

"NEXT PLAY: I DON’T MIND GOING FOR IT AND TRUSTING YOUR DEFENSE HERE. IT LOOKED ON TV LIKE MANSELL HAD HOCKENSEN OPEN. I CAN’T SEE IF THERE WAS A SAFETY NEAR BY THAT WOULD HAVE CLOSED THE GAP THERE BUT AT LEAST ON TV IT LOOKED THAT WAY. ON THE REPLAY I’M GUESSING #26 WAS IN THE AREA."

Heater, I have watched this several times now ... wow, Hock was WIDE OPEN! It was an amazing call and everyone but PM executed it. Hock waited just long enough in the tackle position (but not covered), everyone on the defense was shifting to the right with PM's roll out. I think PM didn't see Hock clearly due to the DE rushing in that exact line of site ... very bad luck.

If he delivers the ball it is at a minimum 10-15 yard gain, but likely a TD.

Hooker was totally in man with no over the top help. Normally, you play inside leverage and you can't give up the inside. I think we sent 7, so the ball should be coming out quick.

Secondly, Gervase made a perfect read. They were in 1/4, 1/4, 1/2 coverage and Gervase read 2 verticles so he immediately points to and yells at Moss that he has the first verticle and he is taking the second, so he lets the TE go and jumps on the second verticle. Moss either didn't hear him or didn't 'get it' and stands all by himself covering air, like he's in cover 3. Gervase chews his ass after the play, flailing his arm, etc. Watch the replay, you can see everything I just said.

They were in cover zero on Sorely's TD run, but they sent everyone except Hockaday, who I would assume was supposed to shadow the QB, but instead, he delay blitzes to the strong side. You would think Hockaday would have seen the left guard pull right in front of him, indicating it was a QB draw. They ran the same play with the back up QB for a first down earlier in the game.

Hockaday wasn't thinking. He followed the RB when that entire side of the LOS was packed with players. He should have been and maybe was supposed to be spying McSorely. I would have loved to see him stay in his spot and meet him at the hole rudely.

yeah, Gervase had the RB in man and attacked him in the backfield, you would think Hockaday was supposed to spy the QB and like I said, he still should be reading his triangle and seeing the guard pulling to his right and keying it.

For the entire game, Stanley was 16/32 for 193 yards, 6.03 ypa, with Fant, Hockenson and B. Smith in the game (also including any 2 TEs and Smith). That's not great but not that bad. All other times, when some combination of Easley, ISM and Groeneweg were in at the same time, sometimes all three, Stanley was 2/17 for 12 yards and less than 1 yard per attempt. I guess the take away is PSU is too athletic in the secondary to try to matchup with multiple undersized WR's in at the same time.

ALSO, ONCE AGAIN A DEFENDER LEAPS OVER WIRFS. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN 1ST AND GOAL BUT THEY DIDN’T CALL IT.

I also noticed this and thought it was kind of obvious... but because it was so obvious, I wasn't sure what that rule even is?

HOW OFTEN DOES PHIL PARKER GO ZERO SAFETIES DEEP WHEN IT’S NOT DIRE TO GET THE STOP? WE HAVE BOTH SAFETIES ON THE LOS AND HOCKADAY IS THE ONLY GUY BACK, HE GUESSED WRONG AND MCSORELY IS OFF TO THE RACES.

Great question - anybody know how often PP defense would play that aggressively when it isn't a "must stop" situation? It looked so easy for McSorely.

:40 REALLY DIDN’T THINK THEY WERE GOING TO OVERTURN THAT BUT I CAN’T HONESTLY SAY I THOUGHT IT WAS THE WRONG CALL. GREAT EFFORT BY TJ REGARDLESS.

If you believe the point of replay is to watch enough such that you can GUESS what happened regardless of the call on the field, then this is exhibit A for replay. I didn't see anything that suggested that call on the field should be over-turned. I was also a little drunk though, and haven't watched it again since then. Maybe sober Pepp sees it, I am not sure.
