Dolphins won 2nd consecutive Super Bowl
Hank Aaron beat Babe Ruth's home run record
Ali vs. Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle"
"All in the Family" was the top-rated TV show
"The Way We Were" by Barbara Streisand was the #1 song of the year
"Blazing Saddles" was the #1 movie that year

I got my drivers license.
 
The Godfather Part II released in 1974 and later won best picture for the year. John Denver's Back Home Again was the best selling album of that summer, reached #1 and stayed in the top 40 for 37 weeks.

The Candyman Killer poisoned his own son with cyanide-laced pixie sticks Halloween candy, to collect a $20,000 insurance policy on the 8-year-old, which he had purchased about a week before Halloween...

I was born. That was critical.
 
I was just reading how we actually tried permanent daylight savings in 1973 and it was so unpopular that they scrapped it in 1974.
