This blows my mind -Led Zeppelin/John Bonham

Bonham is a drumming rabbit hole on YT that is quite awesome to dive into.

Fool In The Rain, Black Dog, When The Levee Breaks...he definitely has a distinctive sound that was legendary, but he was a damn great technical drummer too.
As a very amateur drummer, I'd say that Zepplin and Cream are two of the more technically difficult bands to cover.

One of a kind. Heavy, yet with groove and a bit behind the beat. There are plenty of guys that play like machine guns today but haven't a fraction of the musical feel and groove.
Neil Peart was an amazing technician, but for all his skill he really didn't groove.

You often hear excellent musicians refer to the drum and bass section being able to "swing" - it's an old-timey term that dates back to jazz, but you can certainly feel what they're talking about here.

Exactly. It’s nearly impossible to find in current music. Like most everything, the more automated it becomes the less soul it has.

The best rock drummer . . .

. . . Not named Neil Peart

I do believe both could be termed "lead drummers", meaning the music had to have them and them alone to make the music work - lesser (or...different?) drummers, the music wouldn't have been nearly as great.

There's a reason why we don't have a Rush post-Peart and a Zeppelin post-Bonham. Just would not be the same musically. Jimi Hendrix for example - I believe his songs with anybody not named Mitch Mitchell isn't as compelling - the best Hendrix is the "Experience" Hendrix.

Peart yes, Bonham not so much. His sound and groove were certainly unique, but it didn’t take over the music like Peart or Keith Moon. As a lifelong drummer, I appreciate all those guys. Each have a unique fit with their band.

Mitch Mitchell is criminally underrated in the rock drumming world. Yet, I wonder how many rock drumming giants would have fallen on their face trying to keep up with Hendrix's constant improvisations? I wish more people understood just how advanced and demanding jazz drumming is. Especially in the fusion scene.

Do you play, bro? Love me some Bonham triplets.

I used to back in high school and early 20's, so it's been a long time. Didn't really play enough to get amazing at it, but OK enough to understand how ****ing hard it is. I just play congas and other hand drums now because it's easier to play in an apartment. Once I get a house, my gift to myself will be a kit so I can wail again. Doesn't matter if I suck, wailing on the drums is just therapy lol.

Great therapy. Nothing like it. I've been playing since I was 12.

I don't know about criminally underrated, many recognize his talents. You nailed it though. It was less about physical chops (though he most definitely had those) than his musicianship... his ability to play with and off Hendrix.
Today's world is loaded with guys who play drums like they're a fvcking machine. Fast as hell and mechanical but without an ounce of soul or feel. No Thanks. Mitch was a musician. Show me a guy who can make a room full of people dance with a simple 4 piece kit and 2-3 cymbals and you have a great drummer.
