So the guy - a convicted offender - apparently now claimed to identify as a woman, so the county:school pool people just said “sure go ahead in”. His defense, presumably, will be “how exactly am I supposed to change?” Evil genius, gullible public.

Peak Arlington.

Will be interesting to see if this will become a repeat of youngkin’s 2021 electoral playbook for the va governor. Paging winsome sears. Or perhaps a dep of Ed investigation.

As a sex offender it's already illegal for the individual to be on school grounds. Pretty simple for the manager to check the registered sexual offenders list. This isn't a trans incident, it's a management failure.

It’s both - not in the sense that the guys actually trans, but in the sense that the policy creates presumptions of legitimacy based on a simple declaration.

Btw, if I go to a county pool, or say, go to a school basketball game, I’m not really sure I’d expect them to be checking everybody against the registry. So maybe not as big a management fail either

Probably not at a ball game, but at a school located community pool I would think it would be responsible to check the registry.

Please note the following Regulations pertaining the use of the Arlington Aquatics Centers and fees:

  • All persons entering the pool must check in and pay the appropriate fees or present memberships or swim cards.
  • Arlington Residents receive a discounted rate when presenting proof of residency and some form of identification with a photograph.
  • Persons enrolled in Community Classes, private lessons, the Arlington Aquatic Club, or any other team renting the swimming pool will not be charged admission during the class or practice.
  • Fees may be paid by VISA/MasterCard, cash, or check to Arlington Public Schools.
  • Persons purchasing a membership or swim pass must complete and sign a “Hold Harmless” form.
  • Swim Passes are non-refundable and are valid for six months from the day of purchase.
  • Memberships are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • Persons paying general admission are required to sign in.
The bolded rules would allow for a quick check of the registry.

Conceivably yes, though again, i'm imagining the typical suburban mom or dad, the throughput at the W-L pool (which is in my neighborhood), and the (sometimes) kid the counter doing this...and then I think...maybe not. But if so, why not at the ball game?

At the end of the day, a whole lot of stupid going on here, though a stupid that is pretty consistent with the mindset in Arlington, but a stupid that i suspect/fear could well be spun into a bigger cause celebre given our off cycle gubernatorial election. (To be clear, R's aren't winning Arlington, ever, but Arlington will be a perfect messaging punching bag for use in the rest of the state.)

See my problem is I worked at small school with a fitness center that was available to the public through a membership fee, but not during school hours. Our community was small enough that we were aware of the registered sex offenders in the area and could easily stop them from joining. In metropolitan areas I'm sure it would be more difficult, but also more necessary.
