Just watched Fran's post game press conference.

Something is seriously wrong with this team, and it isn't poor shooting or fatigue. I think there is something going on between the players. Something internal that has torn them apart.

Fran looked like a man who has done everything he can to fix things, but it has fallen on deaf ears. He looks like he just doesn't know what to do. He sees what is happening, and is powerless to stop it.

Well, he's being paid millions of dollars TO stop it. Maybe he oughta nut up.

Sadly agree.. Never good when that's a coaches response! Turgeon just did the same thing.. Again that being said, plenty of decisions he could have made over the past two games to put them in a better position!

Stop playing zone would be a start.

Disagree. That's it exactly.
Watch the press conference. The problem isn't poor shooting.

Catch the comment on Gesell? Fran said he had a good look, but also said "He had several options but decided to drive it in there." Meaning that wasn't what he was supposed to do....he just ignored his coach and did his own thing. Remember the movie "Hoosiers", where Rade quit passing the ball and just shot every time down the court? Gesell = Rade. And he may not be the only one.

I had a bad feeling a week ago when news of a players only meeting was leaked to the press. Player only meetings are like "fight club" and the first rule is no one talks about it. The fact that it was a redshirt freshman who spilled the beans was troubling. It suggested to me that this team is not " tight" and there is not the team unity and respect for the seniors that there should be. Some people may not think it was a big deal but it gave me a bad vibe.

Well our #1 option was laying on the floor after getting run over setting a screen. How that doesn't get called is beyond me. Woody was at the top of the key, I am guessing he wasn't the option to shoot the 3. Gessell had an open lane to the rim as the help side defense didn't come over to help, they bailed and went to cover Jok in the corner. So I can't blame Gessell for taking it, I am sure Fran will see that in Film. There was no other option there. The only player he could of passed it to would of been Woody. Everyone else was covered and "not moving".

The glaring issue is Iowa didn't have any "off the ball" movement after the screen. Why not set up Peter Jok coming off of screens like they use to do with JO? Set something up to get people moving and possible roll to the basket? Nope we have 3 guys stand out by the 3pt line and our 4th guy laying on the ground.

Women, in one way, shape or form, will be at the bottom of this.
I heard wegher knocked up AC's sister.....................but seriously folks, I dont know what the hell is going on with this team. And it doesn't look to be getting better any time soon.

First what's going on with this team is losing. There's no fun in that - seriously.

Second MG had a pretty darn good offensive night for once but our studs were 9-27. Utoff did not want the ball down the stretch but he lacks confidence at times.

The best case scenario to me was Jok shooting a 3 ball to win it. Remember if MG makes the shot it's going OT which only prolongs the agony.

So you think Iowa could have got a better look than that?

It was literally a one inch shot.

No chance in a million years you ever get a better shot than that.

Gesell is just a fundamentally flawed player. Theres a hundred ways to get that shot off with out getting it blocked from directly behind, you cannot possibly ask for a better look than that but he just doesn't have that necessary feel for the game to finish a simple play.

When you're dealt with a player like that theres nothing a coach can do in that scenario.

Lulz, off the ball movement.........ain't nobody got time for that here at Iowa.

Yeah, like extending his arm out in front of him since there was no one there to contest his shot from his front side, and that would also force the defender to reach over Gesell's back to get to the ball...........................not that the refs would've called a foul or anything anyways, but still...

Maybe Fran is the problem. For all of his strengths, his Iowa teams have been terrible in close games. Theres lack of composure on the floor and on the bench. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.

Turnovers and missing open shots are why we lost this game. I think we had 9 turnovers in the 1st half alone and both Peter and Jarrod missed several open 3's. Jok at least had been making most of those of late.

I also recall a few times when Uthoff had the ball with about 5 seconds on the shot clock and instead of taking a contested jumper (because a contested Uthoff shot is still better than an open shot from anybody except Jok) he passed it to Gessel and Gessel really had no where to go and not enough time to create anything.
Uthoff has also been very indecisive during this last stretch. He looks like he doesn't know if he wants to shoot, drive, go up strong or fade away and he's been whistled for traveling because of it multiple times in these past 2-3 games.

Well, to be fair, if you were one of the other players, and every single time when in that same situation over the past four years you had seen your point guard drive into the lane, and NEVER pass the ball, why would it occur to you to do anything other than stand out by the 3 point line and watch, and hope that this would be the one time that point guard actually made the lay up.

Well if Fran didn't want Gesell taking to the hoop, then Fran should have benched him many games ago. Gesell taking it to the hoop is the only play we seem to run at end of halves or end of games.

Yeah that happened a couple times....but Gesell dribbling at top of key to run off 5 seconds on shot clock before he even makes a pass puts us behind the 8-ball a little. Uthoff is a great player, but we don't have enough shooters/slashers around him...he is being doubled quite a bit.

Watch it again, nimrod. He followed that up with "I think he made a good decision."

It was the only sentence in the entire 90 seconds that was loud enough for anyone to actually hear without an NSA-quality wiretap.

We will always have a talent gap with most teams we play and in order to have a streak like we had earlier, everything has to go well. Taking care of the ball, shooting, defensive communication, and foul shooting. Over the last few games, those things have gone bye bye.

I think it's a combination of a couple things:

1- You have players don't tend to tighten way up when in pressure situations.
2- You have a temper-tantrum spazz as a coach.

I think those things wear each other down as the season progresses. Why do we see these same results year after year?

This is why I think if we focus on getting better athletes and get away from the white iowa kids, this may improve.

Or maybe not. I think we will miss Woody a ton, but I don't think turning the rosters over a bit for next year is necessarily a bad thing.

I don't see why Fran won't reconsider his timeout strategy late in games.

Plus remember, Iowa is simply cursed. Don't forget about the curse.

Let's just face the fact : We're not as good as we thought, or were led to believe, we were ! I seriously do not think we are a top 20 team and won't be in there at the end !

Why is your #1 option setting a screen anyway? Why set a screen just let Gesell run up the court, maybe he will pass it to someone...

That is exactly what he was supposed to do. They drew up the play to set a ball screen for Mike and after that it is up to him to choose the best option. I would say driving it to a wide open basket is the right call. Was he supposed to pass it to the former National Player of the Year candidate? Because he was laying flat on his back 35 feet away from the hoop. I didn't see any better options on that play than what he did. Fran praised Mike's decision on the play. As usual in late game situations, everyone else was just standing around waiting for Mike to do something. He made a very good play. OSU just made a better play defensively.

Would anybody on this board been upset if we went for the 3 and lost if we had a good look at it..?? I just dont think we win in OT even if we would have tied it....

Jarrod Uthoff didn’t attempt a shot in Iowa’s final nine possessions.

In a 68-64 loss to Ohio State, that stood out. Why not?

“You’ll have to ask him,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said.

Did Gesell know Uthoff had been flattened on the pick? I doubt it, he had his head down in drive to basket mode.

If Fran wants Uthoff or Jok or clemmons to shoot the last shot, call a timeout and call a play ahead of time. This put the ball in hands of Gesell is not working. Gesell wants the ball at end, or is at least willing, but lacks the ability to convert vs a focused defense.

A one inch shot against a guy 6 inches taller than the shooter. What are your options..? How MG cannot learn a reverse layup is beyond me... Same with Woody. The guy can't jump, so what are your options? Fade away or a reverse layup that the other guy can't touch. He can't make either one. Argh
