This team will beat Iowa State

They weren't focused at all against the Bulls, and they were trying to do crap they presumably won't try against better opponents. Basically, they were trying to make too many spectacular plays. You can't get an alley-oop on EVERY trip down the court, guys.

My concern about tomorrow night -- besides the fact Iowa is a decent team -- is that it's Prohm's first big game as ISU coach. If Fred were still there, I'd put the probabilities of an ISU win well over 90%.

It should be an interesting game. Iowa has the potential to score a lot of points but their defense has been very inconsistent so far this season. If Iowa plays defense like they did against Dayton, Iowa State is likely to score 100+. I think the short answer is nobody has a clue what to expect tomorrow, which is traditionally true in rivalry games.

My question, Lone Clone, is why do you feel Prohm puts ISU more at a disadvantage because it's his first big game at ISU? If Iowa State didn't have a veteran-laden team who didn't understand the significance of the rivalry game, I could see your point. But c'mon, the core of their team has been together 2+ years. What more could Hoiberg provide that would make a measurable difference?

This is why I am nervous. I love Fran and I love the Hawks. I will even Cheer for ISU after the game is over. But my god it seems against "athletic" teams our defense just goes out the window. ISU is very good at shooting the 3 and they are good on the offensive boards. Those two things are RED FLAGS to me. Iowa will have to play one of its best defensive efforts Thursday night to keep the game close. ISU is loaded with talent and will be a FINAL 4 team. Iowa has to shoot lights out and play stellar defense to be in this game. I just do not see it.

I think the hawks play tough, but we have no bench. Iowa also has trouble adjusting to the new rules and I am calling Iowa's starters get into foul trouble (ala Dayton game). Morris/Niang and crew will be attacking and getting our guys into foul trouble.

You people crack me up. Go ahead and tell yourself you don't care if you beat ISU and it's not important to you. If it wasn't you wouldn't be talking about it all night and day. Yes, Iowa has a better Footballl program, yes, ISU has a better basketball program, woman's basketball the same, wrestling Iowa, volleyball ISU. The rest mean nothing to society!

Remind me/us again, Floyd... this is HAWKEYE Report, right?

The relative importance of the isu game is for in-state bragging rights and that is pretty much it. This just completed (well, completed for isu at least) football season exemplifies that. Iowa could have faltered in a non-conference game and then continued through the Big Ten portion of the schedule without another loss and the Hawks still would have played last Saturday in the CCG. Winning or losing to isu (or Pitt or another team not in the Big Ten) had absolutely no bearing on that aspect of the season. Now, if you can even begin to comprehend that, then the rest is easy. Each and every game against a Big Ten foe is always more important than playing any non-con team in the regular season.

As for the latter part of your rant, take a leap into the 21st century. Not only is football better at Iowa but the same can be said for just about any Power 5 institution not named Kansas. The Iowa women's basketball team was a Sweet Sixteen participant in 2014-15 which exceeded anything that the isu women accomplished that recently. Volleyball? Check out the match scores from this fall season results and tell me what you see.

I have to admit my confusion by your last sentence... what "rest" is there for isu?

We won't face a team more "athletic" than FSU all year. ISU actually has a PG, which is a big difference.
