is capable of competing. I know the Big Ten is a grinder but they have the depth and defense to hang with most teams. Joe T was fabulous tonight. I also really like Perkins and Ulis off the bench. This could be a better year than most predicted.

Rebraca needs to hit free throws but other than that, it’s pretty damn good.

He was too pumped. The free throws going long reflect that.
I think some of that comes from actually being part of the offense a few times. Needs to hit the free throws, though. No bout a doubt it.😉

Rebraca played well tonight. Outside of the missed ft’s. He definitely showed that he’s capable, I think as he keeps getting more comfortable he’ll really start to produce.

Filip was 0-3 from the FT line but that last one was a 1 and 1, correct?

So, Filip could have scored 4 points at the FT line and came away with zero. Ouch.

Also, being a coach here, but Joe cannot allow himself to get tied up late in the game like he did; lucky we got the ball back w/ alternating possessions.

A lot of good things to take away. Virginia's the kind of team that peaks later in the year. Wouldn't be surprised if they keep improving and finish 2nd or 3rd in the ACC. This win will age well.

I was really excited, because it felt like Fran might swallow his pride and shelf the zone going forward based on the first few games. Particularly after last year, where Iowa improved defensively after switching to man exclusively. Despite having a lineup full of below average athletes last year.

Unfortunately, he went back to what he knows in the first test of the year. I don’t care if it works for a possession or two. Switching defenses makes the players hesitate and think too much, the zone takes makes us passive, and completely relies on team’s missing open shots (which we can’t control). He's not good at teaching zone. Play man and at least let some of the athletes get after people and force turnovers.

This team hasn't reached its ceiling yet. They can accomplish a lot. But Fran has gotta take a look in the mirror and stop with the zone. Otherwise it's same old good, but not great.

That was not good defense in the second half tonight. It was actually really bad.

Most good teams need to know how to play both zone and man to man. The zone sucked tonight, but give Fran credit for switching back out of it. Overall, I thought our defensive intensity was pretty good in the first half, very spotty in the 2nd. Doesn’t matter what kind of defense you are playing, if you’re not giving 100% and playing smart then it’s going to suck.

Better bring it for 40 minutes Friday or it won't be pretty!

That zone was almost an automatic bucket for Virginia.

It needs to be gone for good. Even on out of bounds plays.

Joe T was fabulous tonight.

What are they feeding him this year?

Last year, he couldn't make any mid-range shots at all.
This year, he's knocking most of those down like an All Big Ten point guard.

Dude has definitely upped his level of play from last year. Bigly.

If he keeps hitting those at even half the clip he is currently, boy are we gonna be dangerous. He can get that shot whenever he wants it.

He said he was gonna spend a ton of time shooting in the off-season. He clearly kept his word. Good for him! And us :)

3 rebounds all game for our big? No bueno to me. Can't buy a ft. Better step it up Friday.
Lucky pmac was there to bail him out!

I thought Rebraca played pretty well tonight all things considered.

I did question Fran leaving him out there at the end when it was a one score game. His FT shooting, should cost him some playing time in close games.

I don't think he should be playing nearly 30 minutes unless he can play big. I think Kris should get as many minutes as him.
We'll certainly see what he's got the next 2 games

It’s a major problem. Looks like Fran went zone to protect Keegan when playing 5 and Jbo at off guard. With a big lead we should have countered sooner with a defensive lineup. The corner and base line are just abused in that zone.

What?? He had a fabulous game tonight outside the free throws. Nice post moves, big boards, lot of hustle. He’s also capable from 3.
We have lots of guys that can shoot. He had 3 rebounds in almost 30 minutes.

But apparently hes more valuable than the other guys he's taking minutes from.

And I’m looking forward to watching Cockburn and Edey try to guard Keegan at 25 feet. They will be forced to play zone. If we’re hitting threes we’ve got a shot
I was thinking the same thing. Need to pull Kofi away from the basket somehow.

You realize he is the only 5 we have that gets minutes. Without him you will see Murray’s at 4/5 and us in zone which we all hate. Rebraca allows us to play man to man. He needs to play a lot

Illinois and Purdue, with their bigs, will kill us inside.

A good thing we won otherwise Rebraca would be getting killed on here. (Including me 😇 )
