A lot of good things to take away. Virginia's the kind of team that peaks later in the year. Wouldn't be surprised if they keep improving and finish 2nd or 3rd in the ACC. This win will age well.
I was really excited, because it felt like Fran might swallow his pride and shelf the zone going forward based on the first few games. Particularly after last year, where Iowa improved defensively after switching to man exclusively. Despite having a lineup full of below average athletes last year.
Unfortunately, he went back to what he knows in the first test of the year. I don’t care if it works for a possession or two. Switching defenses makes the players hesitate and think too much, the zone takes makes us passive, and completely relies on team’s missing open shots (which we can’t control). He's not good at teaching zone. Play man and at least let some of the athletes get after people and force turnovers.
This team hasn't reached its ceiling yet. They can accomplish a lot. But Fran has gotta take a look in the mirror and stop with the zone. Otherwise it's same old good, but not great.
