Seeking opinions. I won't say where, as I don't want to see what is meant as a hypothetical turned into a real crusade.

But let's say I know of a place where a court house bell was once buried in a cemetery for over a year. Why? Because that town had lost an election and was no longer going to be the county seat. So residents hid the bell rather than give it to those rotten people in the other town who were getting a new courthouse and jail!

This was over 150 years ago. After a year, a Church was being built and the bell was dug up and put in the Church bell tower.

Uh oh...here comes the question, pick one (this should have been a poll):

A) Hey! That bell was paid for with taxpayer money! Take it from the Church and give it to the Court House in the other town where it belongs!

B) Cripes, it was a matter of town pride and back then nobody thought twice whether it was in a Courthouse or Church. The town just wanted to keep the bell! Besides, it is kind of history now anyway, isn't it?

C) Other.

As it relates to rocks on Court House lawns...many have been around since the 1950's. Isn't there a little history built up? There are crosses in Arlington Cemetery, should those come down too?

I appreciate the effort, but I don't think this is a real great foil for this debate. A bell is not inherently religious. This particular bell was commissioned for secular purposes, but even if you reverse it and move it from a church to a town hall the bell is neutral on matters of faith.

This is a simple matter of theft. The town stole the bell and got away with it. And they chose to use that theft to glorify their God. Now that just says it all.
