Positives:
-Good crowd, I’d guess 9k
-Freeman, dude had himself a night!
-Thelwell, homie was clutch and he needs to start
-Crowd finally awoke late in second half. I-O-W-A, let’s go hawks chants
-defense, yes defense, it was really good in the second half
-Traore, I love his energy, needs more minutes
-Beth G, got to meet her. awesome woman.

Negatives:
-Atmosphere was very lame, no band, no cheeeleaders, audio national anthem, mostly rap music and commercials during breaks. Blah!
-Sandfort brothers really struggled
-Dix was just a bad tonight. something off
-Brock, way too many forced passes
-free throws, struggle bus
-refs, so many bad calls I won’t have a voice tomorrow

I hope the hawks come back to Moline again soon but really treat it like a home game

4-0 baby!

I was pleasantly surprised that on a night where things just seemed “off” that they found a way to win.

I’m torn on the Harding vs Thelwell debate. Agree, Thelwell is playing like a dude! But I think Harding plays with an immense amount of energy and “bounce” - and his turnovers the last couple games are uncharacteristic. If they continue, then switching it up might make sense, but I kinda like the PG split right now.

I didn't enjoy the simulcast on the video board during gameplay. Pretty sure it distracted free throws having to watch yourself.

Otherwise loved everything else

Big win! Sloppy game at times, missed free throws, dry spells. Came out a lot better in the second half and finally got it going late. Freeman indeed had himself a night! Still don't know what the technical on him was all about and apparently he didn't either. Hawks survived the last 8 minutes in the first half with Freeman on the bench and had a nice run to get it close before half.

Payton with a relatively quiet 18, couldn't hardly buy a 3 even when it looked like he got a good shot off.

Wish Brock would have seen the court more, this was truly his homecoming even more so than Freeman. Some nice moments still. Thought Fran should have sent Brock instead of Brauns on for Freeman late for a nice ovation, missed opportunity.

Definitely +1 on the lame / bland atmosphere for most of the game. I've not been to a 'neutral' court game like this, but I expected this to be more of an Iowa home game, maybe with the pep band and at the very least a few cheerleaders, but they were definitely noticeably missing. Herky didn't do too much either. Nothing really during halftime. No live cameras on the video board, just showed the BTN broadcast. Took a long while for the crowd to get into it, but got pretty good finally towards the end of the second half. Fun to have a game in the QC though, maybe try to make it a every few years deal or something.

Fran said Dix had an injured wrist.

We won in a game in which are 3 best shooters Dix, Sandforts were off. Payton kept firing and missing so that is a plus.

Thelwell looks like the more complete player than Harding. Harding does some things that are truly unique/special and then he follows those plays up with some awful missed shots or turnovers. Harding to me is a guy that might blossom next year, but so far this year he's not made the big jump in his game.

We held WSU down in scoring, but the were totally bricking open 3pt shots and it should have been an easy win as bad as WSU was shooting the 3....except Sandforts were equally bricking for Iowa and we couldn't stop the dribble drive from their PG, so it was a slugfest.
Good win...possibly WSU is an NCAA tournament team...unlikely that they are a Sweet16 caliber team. Maybe his Iowa team improves a lot and can be a lot better by end of this season.

WSU’s #8 is a dog. That kid played a hell of a game and was unstoppable for the majority of it. He was great at penetrating and finishing at the rim. They were a scrappy team. I think this will end up being a good win.

The crowd was boring. I was right by the court and there were so many people sitting on their hands. Some of these people didn’t cheer at all. I don’t get it? What’s the point of going to a game and being that lame?

The music was really bad. What’s up with no cheerleaders? You could see the Iowa players loving that they had an actual crowd compared to the tomb that is Carver. The university missed a major opportunity here to have some fun. Disappointing to say the least.

He didn’t deserve more time tonight.

We know Fran even with up tempo values a pg who takes care of the ball. We all remember JoeT who could play too fast but could create and play D but Fran went to Jbo who took care of the ball over him. Settles said it best after a 2nd half TO trying to make a fancy pass, time and a place and sometimes just have to make the fundamental play. If Brock is turning it over think you go with Thelwell who I think is better option anyways. Thelwell more experienced and better defender which I think come Big 10 play he will be starting.

Not the prettiest, but a good win nonetheless. Close game that required 100% effort the full 40 minutes. Should pay dividends down the road.

I'd split it with Thelwell starting. Harding the dumbest turnovers and jacked up shots at the most crucial times.

This is typical Iowa. I'm supremely disappointed in Beth. I thought she'd make sure BS like this never happened again. No cheerleaders and no band AN HOUR from Iowa City? LOL

It reminds me of the 1980 Final Four. Iowa, UCLA, Louisville, and Purdue in Indy. Iowa is the only team that fails to send its pep band. I was there, and Iowa handed out kazoos so the fans could play the fight song. I kid you not. Finally, the Purdue band was so embarrassed for us that they played the Iowa Fight Song during the Louisville game.

It was the FINAL FOUR!

The lack of atmosphere last night is another embarrassment. C'mon, Beth. I thought you were better than that.

The official attendance at the Vibrant Arena in Moline for the
Iowa Vs Washington State game was 8,488. This deserves
a return engagement in the near future. Beth can make it happen.
Good crowd, lots of beer sold.

My only fault is that it felt like an NBA game and lacked any type of college vibe.

Very corporate feeling.

Players must be emotionless robots 100% of the time. That’s how basketball is supposed to be played, right?
I really don’t have a problem with his “head slapping”. However he targeted it towards the opponent. In other words the T was for taunting not “excessive celebration”. I realize its vey inconsistent in the way it’s called but just don’t stare down your opponent. Slap away at your head shouting “ look at me!” all you want but don’t “taunt”.

Brock is a better distributor and still like him as the starter but Thelwell should get heavy minutes, more of a Malik Monk spark that we need off the bench. There could be games where Thelwell plays more minutes as he is a bigger and better defender.

Traore should start over Dembele.
How will Brock respond when he's benched and not starting? This will speak volumes regarding his leadership everyone talks about...

Wow that is insane

Owen is one player we can ill-afford to lose for whatever reason - fouls, Ts, illness - and for any length of time, even a few minutes in first half for getting two fouls. Hope he learns to just play the game and forget the taunting. He coulda had 25 or 30 and 15 boards had he not picked up that T and sat.

I thought he was arguing with the ref that he had gotten hit in the head on that play and wanted a foul. Just perhaps a bit too vociferous.
Nope. The tapping the head motion is a move players do nowadays to tell the opponent “I dunked on your head.”

No, he did the "on your head" gesture. It's a taunt to the player that gets dunked on.

Sounds like you only watch one end of the court. Brock was terrible on defense, and the turning point was how the WSU PG no longer drove to the basket at will against Thelwell. Besides Harding and a few lapses, especially by Payton, the defense was actually really good. Dembele's stat line doesn't show how good he was on defense, but he seems better as the center than the PF next to Freeman. I like Traore's game, but I also like the energy he brings off the bench. He needs to get at least 20 min/game, whether he starts or not. Thelwell clearly needs to be on the court more minutes than Brock, maybe 25min/15min IMO.

Brock seen too much of the court. Thelwell needs to start, and Brock could spell him for a few minutes as long as he doesn't make stupid mistakes.

I said he was a bigger and better defender. And that he should get heavy minutes. I guess you have selective reading comprehension.

I am not a Brock hater, but he got abused by the WSU PG, who is probably more comparable to what we will face in the B1G most of the time. Not sure there is much of drop off in distributing the ball, but the difference in the other parts of the game is pretty big from what I have seen.

Payton played better in the second half but was forcing low percentage shots in the first half.

Vibrant Arena at the Mark of the Quad Cities was Iowa’s highest attendance for this young season. 8,488
