Three-Court Basketball

Anybody has knowledge of this older variation of six-on-six basketball?

I do not know much about 3 court basketball played in about the 1920's and 1930's in Iowa. However, there is (or at least was until recently) a "Granny Basketball" league playing in Des Moines. I have a friend/former co-worker who has been playing in it. She was an all state girls player in the late 1960's, played some AAU ball after high school and was invited to an Olympic tryout in either late 1960's or early 1970's. Unfortunately, she always played guard in high school when it was two court and she never developed any offensive moves or much of a shot. If you want to know more, I can get some information for you.

My mother played for Mingo as a jumping center, when they had three court basketball for girls. I can remember her talking about it. Wish I had the pics of her you have as well as the other memories. Thanks for sharing

I thought the 3 not going over half court was bad when I was growing up. This is ridiculous sounding.

My dad’s aunt played this in the 20s. Sounds like they passed from the guards to the fowards , skipping the center 2 players. Their team played in the state tournament.

I know a little. I’m a bit of an Iowa Girl historian

What high school did she play for?

The girls 6 on 6 state basketball tournament used to sell out the Barn every year. Hottest ticket in the state! Some girls were scoring 80 points a game & it wasn't too unusual for one to go off for over 100 points, in 32 minutes. Take that Wilt!

It was pretty unusual to hit 100. Happened only 8 times in the long history of 6 on 6. Four more in the 90 range.

I stand corrected. Since you're a historian of the game, could you possibly list them? Are you talking just the state tournament or historically? Two names I recall are Denise Long of Union Whitten & Deb Coates of Mediapolis. Also last name Lilly from Boone. In the history of the game, I would think it would be more than 8... but IDK.

Sure I can. I’m no Mike Henderson who was by far the best historian of the game but I have just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

Norma Schoulte, Monona - 111
Denise Long, Union Witten - 111
Irene Silka, Maynard - 110
Shannon Kite, EHK - 107
Jan Jensen, EHK - 105 (yes that Jan Jensen)
Helen Corrick, Keswick - 101
Denise Long - 100
Lynn Lorenzen, Ventura - 100

I always thought Rod Hoegh at Elk Horn really changed the girls game to focus on scoring. His teams were the first to utilize the 3 in 6 on 6. Never thought he got the credit he deserved. Kind of a unique individual but a really good coach.

A couple were sectional tournament games. The rest the regular season.

I’m not sure on Debbie Coates individual high but I can look it up. Bud McLearn, widely recognized as the best girls coach ever in Iowa (BB) had a career record of something like 706-80. How incredible is that! Pretty sure he won only 1 state title.

Thanks. I reca ll the girl from Boone in the 70's had a 106 point game. Her last name was Lilly. This was a regular season game.

Edit, Marsha Lilly. High game was 73 points.

I’ll do some research. Was it Boone? Or United?

Also Debbie Coates top game was 79

Fairfield won an SC in the early mid 80s they had a powerhouse team for a stretch. The Des Moines teams, Hoover and East were good as well

Marsha Lilly, 1972. Top score I see from her was scoring 73 in a 101-84 win over Central Dallas

I’ll keep looking. That was a sectional game.

Norma Schoulte played a couple years before my mother at Monona. She was 6’6”. Imagine that in the 50’s.

Did he move on to Lynnville-Sully? I feel like they had some really good teams in the 90's with a Hoegh playing for them.
