This game was the opener of the 2001 season, Kirk's first win on opening day and 5th overall. It saw the first appearances of Brad Banks, Dallas Clark (as a tightend), Aaron Greving and CJ Jones. The offensive line showed that the lumps it took in 99 and 2000 were beginning to pay off as it dominated the overwhelmed MAC team. Ladell Betts led Hawkeye rushers with 99 yards, while Jeremy Allen, Siaka Massaquoi, Fred Russell, Robbie Crockett, and Aaron Greving all rumbled for big gains as well. Aaron Greving tied the NCAA Division 1 record of three touchdowns on his first three carries as well.

We just looked so much faster back then. Other than the NW game this year, when have we ever just appeared to dominate a game?

And this was before the 2002 season.

Now THAT was a friggin backfield. We've talked a lot over the last few years about the issues of having so many RBs we could play. But look at 2001:

Betts- led Iowa in rushing 4 years in a row
Russell- Just a young guy still working his way into the mix, but even then you could see the speed and shiftiness. Iowa has never had another back like him since.............why?
Greving- we only got the one good year out of him, but hey he did tie an NCAA record in this game
Allen- one of the most versatile fullbacks, not just in the KF era, but in Iowa history. He was certainly one of the fastest. Guy had RB speed with a slightly bulkier body. AND he was solid receiver out of the backfield. Another trait of the early KF years bygone...............................................
