senior guard Mike Gesell turns it over. Senior guard Anthony Clemmons misses 2 free throws. Senior Adam Woodbury rebounds ball at point blank range 3 times and does not even attempt to score. Senior Jarod uthoff continues to fade away on every shot clanking them short. Conversely, Yogi takes over game. Hits basket in transition and the big shot. Iowa loses the same way they always do with this group of seniors. They just do not have the guts to finish games. It truly is pathetic. If this group is not up 8 points at the 3 minute mark, they lose. And the stats confirm this. I'm looking forward to the next group. Thankful that this group brought us from the stink of Lickliter years but I am ready for the next chapter. I have read the same crappy book for 4 years with these seniors.

Gesell might be good role player, but he was never a star to put us over the top. Same with Clemmons. You can thank them for their efforts, but time to move on. I doubt these guys do much in B1G tourney or NCAA. Proably going to lose on road at Michigan.

It's one thing to say the seniors can't close but does Iowa really have a wave of closers coming behind them? I really hope so but are the underclassmen up to the task?

Like clockwork, have it a 2 possession game with 3:00 left and Iowa won't win.

Freshman gave the team a chance to win, but seniors played very passive and cost the chance to win I last three minutes. Yes, I'm calling out Woody and Uthoff specifically. When you don't shoot the ball from two feet or take every shot falling/going away from the rim, you are flat out passive. There were some problems during the game with defense and rebounding and obviously some missed shots around the basket, but the seniors lost this game in the last three minutes. Harsh, yes, but also real.
Finally glad to see CW in the game for meaningful minutes. He struggled to run the offense but he showed good patience, athleticism and aggressiveness and some decent defense and rebounding. I hope Fran has nightmares wondering why he waited this long to play him

I could not believe Gessell turned that ball over.

But the glaring issue is that Woody would not attack the basket after getting rebounds. Just goes to show that he is not an elite center. How do you get the ball on the block and pass it out. Utoff needs to stop fading away. I also hate his drive to the left and throwing it up "basically bricking" it. Go to the left, jump stop and go up strong.

You mean the left handed half scoop, half tear drop that is really 100 percent crap. Saw that gem at least 4 times last night.

AMEN Thanks for turning the program around, but their athleticism is just a few steps short. ITS TIME for a new chapter, what I saw when we made the come back from the bench makes me hopeful

Agree with all of this. Just sad to watch really. I love everything this group of Seniors has done for us, but man, their inconsistencies are just painful on the fanbase. Gesell's stupid turnover was the game changer last night. He makes really good plays, then really boneheaded plays. Same with Clemmons and Woodbury. Our starting backcourt shoots in the mid's 60% for Free Throws, just not acceptable.

Until Clemmons making that three, Iowa didn't score from Woodbury's FT to put them up 75-74 with 3:59 left

I don't know what in the Hell Woody was doing on that basket interference. The ball was damn near all the way in.

So weak and he keeps doing it. Made a solid move off the wing early in the game last night and could've tore the rim off the backboard. He instead attempts a BS left handed finger roll that of course doesn't go down.

Good post. Really wish Fran would have played Williams more this season. What he showed last night is that he has a lot of talent and can do a lot of the little things right now but he has a lot of rust on him. If Williams could have even just got Ellingson's minutes this year we could be looking at a guy that could be coming off the bench giving 15-20 quality minutes between the 1-3 positions and also present matchup problems with his length. Same could be said about Wagner who even though has recieved a lot more minutes then Williams Wagner seems to be the only player right now progressing. But with their lack of playing time both players still have enough rust that you can't really play them too many minutes in big games in the tourney.

I hope Fran plays Williams 10 minutes + the rest of the year. At least he can make free throws and tries to rebound. His length caused Indiana fits on the perimeter when he was in last night. Gesell and Clemmons size allows anyone to shoot over them on the perimeter.

Sorry your life is so pathetic that you have to intensely criticize these young men playing their hearts out for the Iowa Hawkeyes. They're trying their best! I wish you could appreciate and respect this for what it is - young men going to college to learn, grow, compete and try to do the best job they can for a sport and school they chose to represent. A lot of great things these young men did during their careers at Iowa - Thank You Anthony, Mike, Adam and Jarod!

What Woody was doing is called "REAL TIME". He was playing hard and trying to make a play. This isn't your GameBoy they're playing. Things happen in real time - sometimes things that you don't want to happen or wish that happened. But they happened this time cause he was going hard to the rim to try to help his team. Live with it!

I was at the game and in real time, it looked like interference, but then woke to see ESPN replay of last 1:16. After multiple replays, that ball was not going in and was probably 75% out of the cylinder. The only reason Woody touched the ball was because he was on left side of rim. The earlier plays when he got rebounds and passed the ball out was because he was on the right side and he is flat out too weak from that side. It is absolutely pathetic that a 7'1" senior does not have the ability to use either hand from 2 feet away. That is a combination of lazy player to not develop that shot and terrible coaching to not force him to shoot right handed from that spot 100 times a day all summer every summer for the last three years. Again, Fran has not developed a post player at Iowa.

Freyvet: These posts in this thread are 100% accurate. Stop trying to excuse poor play from our seniors. The fact is this group just hasn't played like the experienced group they are.

The effort from the bench was extraordinary. It just looks like the seniors have lost all confidence and the coach doesn't know how to restore it.

We have seen some good individual performances on a few occasions, but with no consistency.

They are short on talent and can't make the one on one plays that are sometimes required.

If you don't see that... then I don't know what games you are watching.

Just because you say they are 100% accurate doesn't mean anything...I could say they are 100% inaccurate. My point, these are college kids doing their best AND they've had a great 4 years! They just lost a close game at home to a team that won the Big Ten! You can post all the negative crap you want AND I'll keep being positive and trying to keep things in perspective!

Yeah. You must not have reading comprehension skills. I said thanks for turning program around and then reiterated exactly why I'm ready for then to move on. They are good kids. Just suck horribly at closing out games as evidenced by 4 years of same results. If that hurts your feelings, sorry. I'm just pointing out the pattern. To say they work hard as justification for continued failures in close games is a participation trophy type mentality...not that of competitive championship team.

I always love it when some coward makes assumptions about another...like calling another posters life pathetic. What's more pathetic then repeating same thing over and over with same crappy results? Oh I know... They tried hard.

I honestly can't believe that Jok isn't taking more heat. I think part of the "slide" is that when he got hot at the beginning of the B1G season, it really effected his and the teams play.
- unless he is hitting his outside shot he doesn't really contribute
- he forces a lot of shots
- he gambles way too much on D and pouts a lot when people get physical on him

I felt his somewhat selfish play of late has had a large impact on the team

yes, I get it! You deserve a Big Ten Championship and because you cheer for the Hawks you can post crappy things about college athletes. Bravo - you are a strong man!

In Real Time Real Centers turn offensive rebounds under the hoop into points all game long. Woody is just too unathletic to do that and like another poster said too fill in the blank to not have strengthened his right side in 4 years.

"I have read the same crappy book for 4 years with these seniors" This was your last line in your first post - who is the coward???? Yes, they did try hard! At the end of the day in life when you go out and give your best effort you can and should be able to hold your head high! I teach my kids that, I teach my college basketball team that & I try to live by this! This, my friend, is what we all should be after in life - doing our best! And often times it wont be rewarded with a Championships or even a win but it is what is most important!

ok, I guess I haven't seen the replay because I was at the game and they didn't show it on the screens at all. From where I was it was hard to tell but looked like it was in.

I don't have major issues with Fran at all, but the one consistent over his tenure is we have been terrible at close games under 2:00. Honestly, outside of maybe B Cartwright, from Marble to Gesell and Uthoff and on and on, not much in the way of clutch.

This. When he hit outside shots he would also drive, now he is acting more like Baer (with less hustle), running from side to side hoping to be open.

And like 3 different times last night when he either didn't get passed to or mishandled the pass, he just jogged back and was beat in transition. It's not like the seniors played a great game, but i could see where his nonchalant attitude got under their skin a bit

I noticed this from Jok, but I also think he is clearly not healthy. He looked to have no energy again last night and also seemed to be limping a little bit. His last shot was not the same smooth up and down motion that makes him so deadly.

If you noticed his shot wasn't his normal one, it was a Uthoff special.. fade away 3. Jok and Uthoff are missing short all the time because 90% of their shots are fade away's, ridiculous driving layups or NBA+ range three's. Uthoff needs to stop trying that jab step fade away shot.. when he heats up he can get going with it, but way to often lately its a first choice shot and its way to difficult of a shot to start out with.

I think the only fading away with Pete's final shot last night is that he had to step back and make sure he was behind the 3 point line.

U just don't get it. Read these posts.. now go to ISU site and read...now go to Illinois and read...now go to another D1 team that just lost...now go sit in the stands at a high school game...now go to a youth basketball tournament. We have lost ALL perspective on athletics!

So, No, I don't believe in participation trophies but the constant criticism and negativity of college athletes is nauseating at best and just flat out wrong at worst!
Your confusing criticism with insulting. I'm not for insulting these kids. But your getting mad about criticism. Trust me Fran evaluates every action every player makes every second of every game. And make no mistake he's very critical. Says worse stuff then what's said on here. I haven't seen you start any threads about Fran going crazy and yelling his lungs out at his players during games. What in the world do you think he's saying when he's doing that?
