Tim Beckman fired at Illinois?

BTN is reporting it.

University of Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas dismissed head football coach Tim Beckman on Friday, citing preliminary results of an external review into allegations involving the program.

Thomas said the timing is unfortunate with the season one week away. But based on preliminary findings, he said, it was in the best interests of student-athletes to act now rather than when a final report is issued and publicly released, which likely will occur during the season.

Beckman will not receive the $3.1 million remaining on the last two years of his original five-year contract or the $743,000 called for if his contract had been bought out.

crazy! Illinois is a mess as usual. Of course they may be better off without him.

Can't believe they waited this long.

What a clown show that university is.
they did this so they wont have to pay him. this is from ill

How is promoting his #2 going to help solve the problems?

I mean there's not a whole lot they can do. The firing is due to the investigation, not wins. Otherwise, this would have been a lot sooner. Not exactly easy to find an entire new staff and get them to gel with the team within one week.

I get that, but the firing is, reportedly, because the staff is manipulating injuries to keep players on the field.

So it is about safety....like this guy wasn't involved?

Coincidentally, looks like new coach was at WMU prior to Fleck.

I think Illini will go offensive, but I think they need to go defense, like Venables or Smart.

Even better would be Wally Burnham or Chizik...

Bo Pelini. He would recruit Chicago like he owns it, build an NFL defense, then circle the Nebraska game.

More importantly how's this going to play out with recruiting. Was there any Illini commits that considered Iowa?

We saw how few of commits there were for Michigan last year with hokes impending departure and kids that decomitted. And that's from a premiere program like Michigan not a bottom tier big 10 team like Illinois.

bet they go after Fleck.

Saw a tweet (can't confirm if true) that the interim coach told a player to stop taking anti depressants. If that is true....

If they go Fleck, we'll have recruiting issues in Illinois in the future - best recruiter in the nation.

On a positive note, until IL select a new HC, I notice they have a few 3Star OT we could cherry pick?!?!

I applaud Illinois for taking this step. But, I wonder if they would have done the same thing if he was winning?

Promoting the OC as if he had no idea of what was happening in the program is insanity.

If they were smart, they would be escorting AD Thomas to the door as well!

I know there's not a ton of fan support, but Illinois is one program that is a potential sleeping giant. Huge population in-state. No other in-state schools to compete with. Good football talent to recruit. The right coach could turn them into a power..

They compete with Northwestern, Michigan, and Notre Dame. All those catholic school football factories around Chicago funnel them there. Not to mention, with the exception of Michigan those other schools are closer to home.

PJ Fleck = Darell Hazell and Turner Gill

It's completely baffling how people fall in love with these MAC flavors-of-the-month. Beckman had two 8-5 seasons at Toledo before taking the Illinois job. Fleck just went 8-5. What the hell is the difference?

How about Tim brewster? Haha.

Seriously, I would rather not see Fleck there. Don't know a ton about him but everything ii have heard has been good. Beckman had very little wow factor coming in. He hadn't built anything.

We need Illinois to continue to be a coaching grave yard. No jerry kills allowed.

What a clown show that university is.

Corrupt clusterf*ck of a state government = corrupt clusterf*ck of a state university. Simple as that.

I've been completely done with supporting ANY part of the university for the past 2 years. There are many embarrassed and angry former alumni like me. Thomas will not last past Thanksgiving.

More importantly -- forget sports -- if Illinois cannot significantly increase its endowment and get some legal separation from the state government, it will be a shell of its former self 10 years from now. That place is facing an existential crisis and I'm not at all sure it is going to pull through. I am sad and very, very angry.

Some have crashed and burned, but Jerry Kill has obviously worked out well for Minnesota. Schools hiring MAC coaches are presumably looking for the next Jerry Kill. Clearly, Kill seems to be more the exception than the rule among MAC coaches. That said, I suspect some other good MAC coach will succeed at a Big 5 school in the relatively near future, as Kill has, but hiring a MAC coach clearly isn't any more of a sure thing than hiring a successful Big 5 coordinator, etc.

I don't think Kill fits that mold, except for being in the MAC. He was more Fran than MAC of the month, as he had built multiple programs and kept his staff intact, proving his ability to build winners.

It was always clear he was going to succeed at rebuilding Minny, I think the question was whether he could continue their improving once they got there. Imo, they just got there, now we will see what he can do.

When has NW ever reeled in top talent? With the academic requirements and lack of fan support, that place is not appealing to top-tier recruits.

ND is competition, but they very much recruit nationally. A quick look at their 2015 roster shows 14 of 115 players from Illinois. They also have a high academic standard that can be an issue.

So your argument is that the flagship institution in the 5th most populated state in the country has a tough time recruiting because of competition from an in-state school known for academics that has limited tradition, a nearby football power that very much recruits nationally, and a state school 250 miles from the Illinois border.

Compare this to Iowa...we have two state schools, 25% of the population, limited high-end talent, and one of the greatest football factories 45 minutes from our western border. And yet Iowa has been a solid program for the better part of 30 years.

Get a good coach in there who can make some recruiting inroads to Chicago, St. Louis, and is able to develop the middle-tier kids like Ferentz does at Iowa and they could be what Michigan State has become.

It's not the whole argument. They contribute but the main factor is kids from Chicago don't want to go to Champaign to play. A good coach could change that, but Illinois doesn't have a history of hiring good coaches.

If Beckmann was winning this entire topic would have been buried and he would still be the coach. He has not won. They are not getting better. Now they fired him with just cause and will save millions.

They need to bring back the Zooker. I think Ron zook is a ST Coach somewhere in the NFL now.
