Titanic tourist sub goes missing

So I would hope there was some kind of waiver for partaking in something so obviously dangerous and unnecessary
I’m sure there were all kinds of waivers but short of some kind of video-taped instruction saying “don’t sue on my behalf if we die”, those waivers are going to be ripped to shreds by the lawyers these people can afford.

There was a waiver that all "divers" were obligated to sign, whether or not it is solid or not, I do not know.

I don't know the details in this case, but it is entirely possible in my mind that there is no insurance company that is going to be found negligible. No SANE insurance company would have underwritten that expedition IMO.

I agree that SOMEBODY is going to get sued, probably more than one somebody. But I would be a little surprised to find out that a reputable insurance company took that risk. We'll see I guess.

Well.... they'd prob run out of oxygen well before they become hungry enough to eat their own shit.
Well, I've heard food like corn passes through the body without breaking down, so maybe it's not that gross as it sounds.

Being the last guy to die would suck.

in your last gasping breaths would you bother picking corn out of another person's shit in pitch black darkness?

A vessel in the Med has something close to 700 migrants drowning and there are rescue “efforts”.
A rich bitch fun escapade with five peeps aboard draws state of the art vessels from across the Northern hemisphere. All is right in this world.
Exactly. Similar to what I said earlier. Huge waste of money and I do not feel sorry for any of them at all. As they were doing it for their own selfish wants.

An obvious take, but it’s worth mentioning when a drunk guy “falls off” a cruise ship the resources committed to a search are also significant, or when a climber gets stuck on a mountain, etc.

This is anomalous because there are very few vessels that even have the capability to get to this absurd depth.

So, no comparison to hundreds drowning in the Med?

Do we need specialized ROV’s to rescue migrants?

I have no idea how surface rescue resources are allocated. Do poor migrants get less allocated resources? Im sure, on a case by case basis. Unfortunately the cases are frequent so there are only so many resources that can be allocated.

You good with funding rescue efforts for the rich?
”I have no idea how surface resources are allocated…”

Yikes.

“At some point, safety just is pure waste,” Stockton told journalist David Pogue in an interview last year. “I mean, if you just want to be safe, don’t get out of bed. Don’t get in your car. Don’t do anything.”

“I think it was General MacArthur who said you’re remembered for the rules you break,” Rush said in a video interview with Mexican YouTuber Alan Estrada last year. “And I’ve broken some rules to make this. I think I’ve broken them with logic and good engineering behind me.”
There’s also a tweet out there summing up some info from Pogue when he went out to that company last year that are pretty damning. While Pogue was there in the control center, apparently the sub got “lost” for 5 hours and during that time, the company blocked all out-bound communication so writers on hand couldn’t tweet about it. Pogue didn’t really do any follow-up or mention it in his coverage.

Shameful.

You do realize that those survivors are billed accordingly, right?

Yeah they’ll get billed. I have a feeling the militaries of the world don’t mind that much because they’re getting real world training on all of their tools and not getting shot at

They are infrequently “billed accordingly,” whatever that means. My state for example passes most search and rescue costs on to taxpayers, and a lot of the work is also done by volunteers.

If they find drunk guy in the middle of the ocean, are you telling me he gets a bill for all services rendered from the Coast Guard and/or any other entity that provided rescue services or searched for him. And even if he did, good luck collecting that.

And why only bill survivors? Couldn’t they also bill the decedents’ estate if the folks are never found?

Agreed, the militaries and these specialized deep sea folks don’t mind and maybe even somewhat enjoy or appreciate this rare opportunity (despite the tragic circumstances).
