President Lincoln gave a short speech of two or three minutes at the dedication of the military cemetery in Gettysburg, PA.

To answer the question, "What was Lincoln's Gettysburg address?" he stayed the night of November 18 at local attorney David Wills's house, which still stands at 8 Lincoln Square, Gettysburg, PA. The street address may have been different at the time.

Lincoln took a small group with him, including secretary John Hay. Historians say Hay got quite intoxicated the night of the 18th-19th and was hung over for the next day's events. Like liked the young man and relied on him for a lot. Hay would go on in later years to serve as US Ambassador to Great Britain and serve as Secretary of State to Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.

Our family has been to the military cemetery in
Gettysburg and stood at the place where Lincoln
gave his address. Our tour guide asked that the
tourists not talk while we walked through the small
cemetery. It was done out of respect for those who
were buried there. We were there in 2004 and toured
by car all the various battlefields. Great experience.
