Tom Allen Of Indiana

What he said ^^^; however, I like a coach with some fire in his belly and willing to step on the other teams neck.

Every coach uses the media for a purpose, KFz included. If one doesn’t believe KFz wants to win as much as the next guy, they’re missing something. If one doesn’t believe a coach uses the media to manipulate a situation, they’re wrong.

To paraphrase Pat Angerer, if a player needs a coach to do all that rah rah stuff in order to get them up for a game, they are playing the wrong sport - coach Ferentz treats his players like men. I think this says something about Kirk that goes way beyond anything that happens in a press conference.

I prefer a HEAD coach (especially at the college level) to be a guy who keeps calm during the storm. When the freshmen QB comes over to the sideline with 2 minutes left down 4 I want a “calming influence” talking to him. Don’t get me wrong there is a place for that wild eyed saliva spitting maniac on the staff. As a young college assistant coach I was pretty much that guy. There were times when the 70 year old hall of fame coach would come over to me in a game or practice and say “when Johnny comes off the field I want you to get in his face and chew his ass”. That person is also needed on the staff I just don’t want it to be the head coach. I know KF’s laid back demeanor drives some fans crazy but I think he has plenty of fire in his belly. He’s extremely cautious what he says to the media but “oh well, that’s football”.

This guy is a piece of work. Glad we don’t have to listen to him every year.

This is what Indiana has needed for years. He at least gets them to play hard and not roll over and play dead. Hes the best recruiter Indiana has ever had. Hes probably average at best as a game day coach but I like him a lot better than Wilson who talked a big game and never did anything.

I hate the Tom Crean references. Yes he wears glasses and hes a bit hyped but that is where the comparison is. Crean was lost half the time and I never understood what he was actually saying.

Tom Allen treats his players extremely well. Just ask one. I've asked many.

I never said he didn’t and I believe he does. One point I was trying to make is that we shouldn’t put much stock in what a coach says during a press conference. It’s what players think that matters because they see the real person in that coach. In that sense, you made my point.

I understand. My point is that he is well respected. Probably why he got that job. He gets emotional in press conferences but I'm glad to have a Head Coach that actually seems to give a ****. We havent had that at IU most of the time.

This. Watch what happens when Brian takes over and gets gushed over for turning the amps up to 11.

Could be similar to Bobby and Mike Stoops. Bobby seems pretty calm on the sideline Mike always looking like he’s ready to explode. I think Mike’s temperament fit better as d-coordinator than a head coach. I like Brian and like his fire but I think he’ll mellow just a bit as he gets older.

I’ve always wanted thought Indiana is a doughnut football team. They have had their share of talented QBs, RBs, and WRs, but they don’t have the line play to compliment that skill position talent. So my analogy is they have a lot on the outside, but nothing in the middle.

What this means is that on any given day they can catch lightening in a bottle and beat anyone. But over the long haul, they will tend to give up more than they get and more often then not they wind up on the outside looking in come bowl time. In many ways, they are like Northwestern but not quite as consistent.

I don’t know Allen at all, but if he claps half as much as Crean you’re in deep, deep trouble ....

Not impressed with the sideline hysterics. Basically the polar opposite of Kirk Ferentz. Bo Pelini after a full pot of strong coffee. I've noticed that the refs are not impressed either.

I really like Coach Allen, and believe he will be able to get IU to bowl games at least semi consistently. He's a good fit there.

Gee, what did Johnny do wrong? ;)

And Kirk at least publicly during games does not rip into kids. A lot of the big name guys you will see do that during tv broadcasts.

Then we are a donut hole as we sure in the hell never have skill position players under this guy

Why do so many Iowa fans have a problem with agressive, emotional coaches?

I don’t care whether a coach is stoic or emotional as long as he gets the job done. For example some people love Fran’s antics, other people not so much. I’ll guarantee you that the scales would tip more towards loving his antics than not if Iowa had better on the court success.

Coach's, good ones, have to coach to their personality. Otherwise, they come off as plastic, just as anyone does in any profession when they're trying to fool people.

I thought Hayden Fry usually hit just the right tone. He was generally calm, but when something exciting happened in a game, he showed some emotion. Not over the top, but he smiled and clapped guys on the back and gave a big kick of joy when it was appropriate. His press conferences were informative and entertaining, and he definitely used them to help his team.

And I'll never forget hearing Hayden's press conference right after Ohio State upset the Hawkeyes in Columbus, costing #1 Iowa a shot at the 1985 national title. Hayden looked and sounded just as shocked and disappointed and crushed as most of us fans did. Hayden could put on a show, but most of the time he genuinely seemed just like us, which is one more reason he is still so highly respected.

Good point, but being strong at the LOS makes up for some of the deficiency in skill players. Also, i’d Argue that Iowa generally has very good TEs and more than serviceable running backs. I’ll give you that WRs are tough to come by.

I know nothing about this guy, but he can't be worse than Mr Dbag himself Kevin Wilson. Hated that guy.

Because it seems that most of those guys are full of S@!#, can't really coach, and love to put the spot light on themselves rather than their players.

/not saying this in reference to Allen as I don't know anything about him.

Indiana's defense is about the same as Minnesota but they have a better offense. Their offense appears to be a little better than ISU's in terms of efficiency.

they are coached by a British comedian?

Montgomery is arguably the better back (in part due to his versatility) compared to IU's Scott. On the flip side, I'd say that IU has a much better OL. Furthermore, compared to the ISU QBs we faced ... IU's Ramsey has much better mobility too.

As for defense, I'd probably saw that the Gopher D is better than IU's. However, on the flip side ... Allen is more of a defensive mind ... so IU's D might play with more of an edge (and that DOES matter). Of course, the comment about Ds was potentially more applicable when Winfield was healthy. That said ... the Gophers seem like they're capable of being pretty darn solid among their front 7.
