Just saw a track wrestling interview with Tom Ryan discussing the absence of Clark and Snyder. "In college wrestling, there are no consequence for duals."
That's from a D1 head coach of a big time program.

coming from the guy that sits half his lineup every other dual.

Seeds are at risks. Building a fan base is at risk. National dual placement is at risk.

What the heck does he want them to be?

Tell 15K at a PSU, Iowa meet that they mean nothing.

A LOT people don't go to Big Tens and or nationals. Many fans only get to see their teams at a duals.

This is just a shatty attitude to have as a coach.

It may sound shitty, but in the whole grand scheme of things, what he said is the truth, especially from a coaches perspective.
I'd like to think he was saying that more as an outcry to change things and make dual meets matter more

Do some people actually think it would be a good thing to have a season that consists only of a few tournaments, and that's it?? It's bizarre to me that some fans and coaches are dismissive of duals. If you're an athlete, you want to compete...and do it a lot, not a little!

You want the formula for making duals matter to your fans?

Have your team wrestle an exciting style & treat them like they matter.

Iowa's huge following was built just as much from the countless uber entertaining IPTV duals during Gable's years as it was from their success at NCAAs.

Most of my friends don't give a crap about wrestling, but they go to a couple Iowa duals every year when they think they are going to be entertained for the night.

Having them part of a national duals series means less than nothing to them. If you made the national duals worth a % of the teams points at NCAAs this also would mean nothing to them.

Again

Have your team wrestle an exciting style & treat them like they matter.

The same thing is happening at PSU right now as happened during Iowa's Heyday. People know they are going to be entertained when they go to watch them wrestle.

You can do this on a smaller scale to. Schwab has built a sense that his guys are gonna wrestle hard at West Gym and you are gonna be entertained. Because he preaches to wrestle hard and he treats them like they matter.

Brands did what was best for clark and his team.
Ryan did what is best for Snyder and Merica.

His words without context just seem like a still bitter coach that his side lost in the dual championship BS and just got smashed in a dual by one of the coaches that caused that BS to be shown for what it is. Not the first time Ryan projected his own problems on outside influences.

He probably wouldn't have said that if he had won.

Did what was best for the team? As far as Big's and NCAA's yes. For the duel, No. He did what was best for Clark. I think what is best for the wrestler outweighs what is best for the team just a little bit. That doesn't mean dodging at every point to protect a seed.

I think you misunderstood his meaning. He means come March.

Ryan is lame. I think that is something that most Penn State and Iowa fans can agree upon.

That said, the question as to how to make regular season dual meets mean much more is a relevant one and one that I have yet to see answered satisfactorily.
