I know there's a lot going on politically, and the Cubs are on. However, that was one impressive thunderstorm we had tonight. I don't recall a single tornado warning in Johnson County this Summer (I am not complaining, just pointing it out), and maybe one severe thunderstorm warning. Tonights storm was loud and had the biggest lighting outbreak of the year to my untrained eyes.

The lightning display was pretty spectacular. My lights popped 3 times in an hour. Very close, very bright, very loud.

We needed this soaker. Hadn't rained a drop all month in CR.

I have never been to Iowa, but I have been to Kansas and Missouri, so I know what Midwest T-storms are like. Totally different than Florida somehow. It's hard to explain.

The wife and I got stranded in an elevator for about 20 minutes at the Double Tree in CR. Had dinner at the top and the storm viewing was fantastic. Great vantage point.

Well I hope you made use of that 20 minutes at least a 3 or 4 times.....

I know the farmers have enjoyed optimal conditions for harvesting this year, but we needed the rain. I wish it would have gone on all night. I love a loud, bright thunderstorm.
Actually, I saw and interview on the the news with a farmer who was concerned about it being to dry for this harvest. He had corn that were testing at 13% moisture content where as ideal picking conditions has the corn in the 23-26% moisture content range. Seems his stalks were falling over in the wind and while picking.

In any case, it was a nice drink of water we had and long overdue. And yes, the lightning was spectacular.

I've been in Chicago the past few days at a conference, so I got to miss the storm.

You are correct about thunderstorms in Florida being different than the midwest. There's just something about them. You don't quite get the dramatic pressure changes I think where you just "feel" like something's not right.

Very loud thunder in eastern Iowa. We lost power for about 3 hours last night...right at the kids' bedtime, of course. :)

Farm owner here. Combining 13% moisture corn is nirvana and you don't have to spend any money on gas or electricity to dry it. The ears husk helps prevent kernel loss before the ear gets into the combine. At that moisture, just pour the shelled corn into the bin or send it down the road to the elevator or ADM.

Soybeans are a different matter, if they get below 10% moisture, the seedcoat becomes brittle and ruptures when combined and the soybean seed literally splits in half. Processors will dock you for that.

That's quite interesting. Hadn't understood the moisture numbers really. Thanks for the information.
