Tony Perkins

Perkins can play! Really looking to see what Perkins can do to get on the floor. He needs to bring some defense. But he seems to have a well rounded game, with a full skill set to work with. Goes well with the left & right.

I would REALLY like to see a lot of these!!

YES PLEASE!!!

Watched highlights from the game ... Kid looks pretty darn smooth ... Our backcourt could really start to shine even more in the next couple of years ...

Agreed. Perkins makes it look easy. And If the Murray twins can bring it, and they look darn good right now in prep school, along with Ulis, our ball movement as a team will be tops in the B1G. Looking forward to it!!!

Yeah, I am really liking the idea of Uhlis, JT, and Perkins ... :D

Just from that video, plus what I’ve seen, I like that:
-He’s a primary ballhandler for his team despite being recruited as a SG
-He seems to have the swagger/confidence/toughness of many of Fran’s recent recruits versus being a quiet, heady type
-He’s playing alongside and against quality competition
-Seems to have pretty good vision
-Confidence in his shot - though I don’t know how good of a shooter he actually is
-Finished with only two fouls. Hopefully not as a result of playing olé defense
-Bounce is really nice too

Seems like he could really be a contributor for the Hawks at some point. Like I’ve said, we don’t need him or Ulis to be immediate contributors in the backcourt given the youth of our current roster, but they both look like they could be high-upside two way guys. I think we got a good class with some late bloomers despite the relative lack of accolades that they’ve received from other teams / recruiting services

Continuing to be pretty optimistic about the future

Appears to have the athletic skills I thought Moss would bring to the Hawks. I certainly missed on Moss, but still think it was more between the ears than the athletic skills. Of course JMO.

Moss was dissappointment vs his good offer list/ relatively high ranking as a recruit. He was okay player, but soft.

Fredrick and Bohannon turned out better than there offer list would suggest. Hopefully Perkins is more like a Fredrick and less like a Dailey/Moss/Hutton type bust. I would throw in Chistian Williams as a bust also...not much of a shooter for a PG.

After watching Dom Uhl spend 4 years on campus and never improve...I predict the Murray Twins will be much better. They start out with better shooting skills and reasonable athleticism.

I like the idea of taking a chance on a low major offer list guy like Perkins who seems to have requisite athleticism to succeed at B1G level than the past offers to guys like Ellingson/Flemming who could not defend even if they had decent offense.

I got this from a poster on another site but it looks like Saucy T is stepping up his game his HS Senior year so far...

- 50% from 2 pt range (13-of-26)
- 73% from 3 pt range (8-of-11)
- 79% from free throw (11-of-14)

We know about his athleticism and have seen his hops & handles. The question is his offensive game. I have a feeling this could be another big time steal for Fran.

I saw more dunks in that 10 minute video of one game than I've seen watching 20+ games per year of Iowa 1A and 2A basketball for the last 8 years.

And yes, that includes a bunch of state tourney teams, 3 State championship teams, and a bunch of all staters...

He's playing against really good competition in the Indianapolis area of large-school Indiana basketball. He certainly looks like he will be able to compete and succeed in the Big 10.

Good post. I have always thought of Fran as a solid X and O coach, but after so many underwhelming offers, I didn't see a scenario where Iowa closed the gap. The season is early and Iowa could play good ball and still not make the NCAA tourney. While not what any of us hope for, I would be much more optimistic heading into next season if the team competes at the level they have thus far.

This is the type of team I envisioned Fran putting together when he was hired, but never came to fruition. Too much reliance on 1-2 guys or 3-point shooting, etc. Garza as the anchor surrounded by multiple shooters has given Iowa a new look. Hard to say what the incoming recruits will bring, but I like the prospects of having multiple guards / wings who appear to be a significant upgrades athletically from the names you listed. As we have seen with Joe T, athleticism goes a long way even if he is still figuring things out.

FranMac had to dig out of a huge whole, and to mix metaphors, with head winds in his face all the way.

The Perkins kid has a kind of weird looking shot but he seemed to always finish with shoulders square and shooting hand aimed straight at the hoop.

Maybe he's pulls a White or CJ and blows up senior year. That was an impressive game against a No.1 ranked opponent.

I asked an Indianapolis newspaper writer about Perkins and his strength and weaknesses. His response, "High energy, physical, efficient shooter. Good instincts/IQ and athleticism. Not a lot of weaknesses. Guess ball handling at next level probably has to improve a bit." That was great to hear.
