In no particular order, there are a lot of movies I have not seen yet.

Alien Romulus
Deadpool Wolverine
Longlegs
Challengers
Furiosa
My Old Ass
Dune II
Nosferatu
Monkey Man
Late Night with the Devil

Of those I’ve only seen Dune II which I did enjoy. That said, I must be getting old cuz I just don’t see many movies anymore… seems like the offerings have been pretty weak for at least the past 5-6 years or maybe longer. And, I cannot get into superhero movies at all anymore… seems like the MCU has them get their ass kicked all movie while a city is being leveled only to see the hero’s win in the end. No mention of the city with millions that was just leveled. I know, I know… I’m the old man yelling at the clouds.

While I did not see that many movies this year I did see most of those. I would remove Longlegs (and Alien Romulus) as I did not love it. And the others because I did not see them.

Dune II
Wild Robot
Kill
Furiosa
Civil War
Heretic
Monkey Man
Deadpool Wolverine

Trying to even recall what I’ve seen… most was at home (streaming):
Civil War
Twisters
Fall Guy
Hit man
Wolves
Gladiator 2
Rob Peace
Horizon Part 1
Rebel Ridge

Probably saw more. Most of these were decent enough but none were great to me. Best thing I recall seeing was The Last of Us on Max.

I haven't heard of a few of them.

I think the only adult movie released in 2024 that I did see was Civil War and Napoleon. The later was seriously disappointing for me as someone who finds Napoleon to be the most fascinating man in history.

I did take my kids to see Inside Out 2 and Sonic 3.

Completely forgot about Hitman. That would be on my list also

Kind of a weak year in movies, but the top three were as good as any top three the last 20 years, My favorites, in order…

1. A Different Man
2. The Substance
3. Dune II
4. Will and Harper
5. Apartment 7A (Rosemary’s Baby prequel)
6. Juror #2
7. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
8. Speak No Evil
9. Goodrich
10. Kingdom of Planet of the Apes

Might make the top ten once I see them:

Heretic
Monkey Man

There aren’t 10 good movies. This is like ranking the 10 best teams in the big ten in 1989.

My Old Ass was great. I enjoyed Dune II and loved Furiosa. Alien Romulus was silly but watchable. Especially the big alien baby.

Nosferatu was a slog. I probably should not have chosen that one as our family Christmas movie.

My top 3 this year:
  1. The Brutalist
  2. Conclave
  3. Nosferatu
The next group:
  • Green Border
  • Woman of the Hour
  • A Complete Unknown
  • Love Lies Bleeding
  • Alien Romulus
  • The Substance
The Substance is one of the more bizarre films made in years, but it was entertaining and probably the film that I've thought about the most since viewing it. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had nostalgia and fun moments, but there was no reason for it to have been made. Dune II was solid. Deadpool & Wolverine was fun for what it is. Horizon Pt. 1 was terrible. I had so much hope for that movie and didn't finish it.

Covid killed the industry. It’s slowly coming back. I used to go to the theatre 7-8 times a year. Now it’s once or twice maybe. Just not a lot of movies that warrant a visit to the theaters.

When most movies come to streaming a month after leaving the theatre it really easy to wait for them.

The only movies I have seen in theaters this year are Studio Ghibli Fest movies.

I think my love for watching movies ended when I couldn't walk through a Family Video or Blockbuster and see all of the cases. I know streaming ensures I can watch the movie, but there was something magical about wanting to see a movie and having to go rent it, praying there is a copy left.

Just caught the trailer for The Brutalist. Can you share more about why you put it #1? I’m intrigued by it…
