Lets rank these QB's over the last 20 years. Yes we could go back farther, but I want some limits. In 1997 we were looking at one of my favorites, Matt Sherman. Now I did not list everyone who took a snap since 1997, but just the main QB each year.

How would you rank them, 1st-Worst?

Matt Sherman
Randy Reiners
Scott Mullen
Jon Beutjer
Kyle McCann
Brad Banks
Nathan Chandler
Drew Tate
Jake Christiansen
Ricky Stanzi
James Vandenberg
Jake Rudock
CJ Beathard
Nathan Stanley

I could probably put CJ at #4. I do however think Chandler was very underrated. He had a solid season but he came right after Brad Banks, so expectations were high, and everybody wanted Drew Tate to play. So Chandler was not as appreciated as he perhaps should have been.

I'm gonna wait until after the Penn St game. If Stanley puts up some good stats and Iowa wins due to Nate's play, he'll jump big. No more weak competition naysayers, this is a coming out party for Nate!

NR - Nathan Stanley- too soon.

Stanley has the best arm strength out of the lot and CJB and Vandy had rockets. Tate had the best feel for the game. Stanzi was the best "winner." Banks had the best feet. CJB was the total package but hobbled by injury.

If I'm looking only for a college QB, not pro potential...

Tate
Banks
Beathard (before the injuries)
Stanzi
Vandenberg
McCann
Chandler
Rudock
Beutjer
Stanley (so far with room to go higher)
Reiner
Mullen
Christiansen

Banks is my favorite, but he had so many weapons at his disposal at WR, TE, RB, and FB it isn't fair to put him at the top.

Tate did more with less in 2004 than any QB on the list and perhaps any QB in Iowa football history. No RBs for most of the season. Hinkel and Solomon as his starting WRs were a good combo, but not much quality after that. And a fairly weak selection of TEs considering that Jackson didn't get much usage and Chandler was still young. That Tate somehow managed to throw for 2700 yards and win the Big Ten title that year with the help of an amazing defense is still unbelievable. On top of that, he has the best escapability by far of any QB on this list which was darn entertaining to watch.

Tough to rank Stanley, too early. But right now somewhere in the giant gap between Beutjer and Rudock.

QB play has definitely taken a big leap forward in the last 20 yrs.

Jake Christiansen was the worst Iowa starting QB in my lifetime. He had no touch, no accuracy, no pocket presence, bad footwork, and had an awkward throwing motion being that he was left-handed. Jake C threw the ball as hard for a 10 yard out as he would have if he was throwing it 70 yards through the air. I think he had the strongest arm of any Iowa QB in the last 20 years, but that's it. I have bad memories of him scrambling to the left, then throwing a rocket to his wide-open receiver downfield, only for the ball to bounce off their hands because it was thrown too hard. The fact that he started over Ricky 'Rick Six' Stanzi for half of a season before getting benched is astounding.

Agree Tate was great. To provide further proof, he has played in the CFL for what, ... 10 years!!?? I just read he earns a nice $300K a year.

I know you said starting QB. But JC had touch compared to Jason Manson

This IMO in regards to who meant the most to their teams. Tate and CJ are at the top.
