Here are the top 12 paid college football coaches
for this year.

1. Nick Saban Alabama ($8.3 Million)
2. Urban Meyer Ohio St. ($7.6 Million)
3. Jim Harbaugh Mich. ($7.5 Million)

10. Scott Frost Nebraska ($5.0 Million)
10. Lovie Smith Illinois ($5.0 Million)
11. James Franklin Penn St. ($4.8 Million)
12. Kirk Ferentz Iowa ($4.7 Million)

Do you think Nebraska and Illinois are getting their
money's worth from Frost and Smith?

Illinois, heck no. Nebraska, as much fun as it was to see them open 0-6, it's just too early to know. If Frost becomes what many Nebraska fans dreamed he might be, then dropping $5M on a give-away season to clear the roster and set a new program will have simply been a drop in the bucket. If, however, Nebraska has several years in the range of futility to mediocrity, then no, not getting money's worth.

Ferentz is only the 6th highest paid coach in the conference? Wow, so much for the “earn your damn money” crowd.

Agree on Nebraska. Ferentz started out with 1 win his first season, then accelerated quickly. Would be surprised if Frost doesn’t do the same.

Lovie Smith is stealing money from the University
of Illinois. The A.D. wanted a big name so he hired
Lovie Smith to demonstrate that Illinois was serious
about college football. The truth is Lovie Smith is
not serious about college football.

In today's college football landscape Kirk Ferentz
with 20 years of service at Iowa is certainly worth
$4.7 million. His stability and success is appreciated
by Hawkeye fans.

This

Before Bo showed up, Michigan had been down in the 50s and 60s. We were snakebit in bowls during his run, but we didn't have a losing season. A number of top 10 and top 5 finishes. The school was able to build on it, and in 97 we split a NC with Neb.

Like Alvarez did, Ferentz has laid a pretty good foundation. It will be interesting to see if it continues when he retires like Wiscy has.

Bo and Woody Hayes of Ohio St. helped put the Big
Ten Conference on the national map of college football.
Both of these coaches were passionate about winning
football games and had their players on the same page.
Hayden Fry did this for Iowa and thankfully Kirk Ferentz
has followed with a steady program for the past 20 years.

Living in Chi and talking to many Illini fans I have some perspective on Lovie Smith.

The Fighting Illini had sucked for a long time. A couple of times they came up for air, even went to a Rose Bowl, but mostly they sucked. Love took the Bears to a Super Bowl and lost. They were one-hit wonders.

Illinois is a very good academic school, their fans are fickle. If Lovie can take the Bears to the Super Bowl he would be a good Big Ten head coach, right? Wrong.

2019 will be Lovie's last year in Champaign. Nice try, didn't work.

Lovie Smith is not a good coach for college football.
He had some success in the NFL, but coming to
Illinois was a step down for his career. Also the
reality is this: Illinois is a basketball school.

Much truth to that Lute. The Illini are very fair weather football fans. Most years you don't even notice them when they visit Iowa City. If they think they are even sniffing a New Year's Day bowl those basketball fans show up in large numbers claiming to be football fans.

Basketball, yeah they do love that in Champaign-Urbana. And they are usually really good at it.

Going on over a decade of suck in that as well.

This year Kirk Ferentz is only the 6th highest paid
coach in the Big Ten. To his credit, Kirk does not
take advantage of his 20 years as head coach at
Iowa. He is a humble and sincere man who is an
excellent role model for his players.
Lord, sometimes I crack up reading your posts

And how the heck do make them so perfectly square?
