The Senate’s top Democratic leaders lied about braces used on AR-15-style “pistols” before Thursday’s vote to support a controversial administration ban on the device designed to help handicapped people shoot, according to several Second Amendment advocates.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and deputy Dick Durbin (D-IL) gave false analysis of the purpose of the braces and the impact of using them in working to stop a GOP effort to block the ban from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, said the experts.
Their descriptions of the brace during a Senate debate resulted in a 50-49 vote Thursday to dismiss a bipartisan House vote against the ATF regulation and came after President Joe Biden also distorted the impact of putting the brace on an AR pistol, one of the “assault weapons” he wants to ban.
“The ignorance of lawmakers on the subject of firearms is second only to the thoroughly debunked rhetoric we constantly hear from President Joe Biden,” said Mark Oliva, spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the firearms industry’s representative in Washington.
Biden, in an anti-gun speech this week, seemed to suggest that the brace allows the shooter to use a bigger bullet, which is impossible. "Put a pistol on a brace, it turns into a gun — makes it more — you can have a higher-caliber weapon, higher-caliber bullet coming out of that gun,” he said.
On Thursday, Schumer said, “If you have ever seen a gunman fire what looks like a machine gun with just one hand, that’s what pistol braces allow you to do.” Machine guns are banned.
And Durbin, in the most twisted and distorted description of the brace and guns, said, “We all know that because of the ammunition magazines that can be strapped on to so many pistols that these become automatic weapons similar to AK-47s. Pistols with stabilizing braces have a reputation in this modern America, though they have been formally forbidden and prohibited, regulated for almost 90 years.”
“These braces don’t turn firearms into machine guns. They haven’t been banned in America for 90 years, as claimed by Sen. Durbin. They’ve been banned since June 1. They don’t turn [or] allow a firearm to shoot larger-caliber ammunition. These lawmakers are lying to the American people to advance an anti-gun narrative that only denigrates their fundamental constitutional rights,” Oliva said.
“At some point, when senators such as Schumer and Durbin are making ridiculously false statements about guns, you can’t even believe that they believe these claims. It is bad enough that they can’t acknowledge how these braces were designed to help disabled people hold on to a gun so that they could use it defensively, but for them to go and talk about these semi-automatic handguns as being machine guns, when they can’t even point to a single instance of this occurring, completely strains credulity,” said John Lott Jr., president of the Crime Prevention Research Center.
One of the nation’s top gun lobbies, Gun Owners of America, posted the statements of the senators online, where they were mocked.
Erich Pratt, the senior vice president of the group, told Secrets, “The recent comments on firearms and pistol braces from the anti-gunners in Congress have proven they have no idea what they’re talking about and are simply just anti-Second Amendment zealots. They’re working to influence public policy at the detriment of law-abiding gun owners. At this point, we have to wonder if they have malicious intent or if they’re just ignorant — or both.”
And Justin Anderson, who is the marketing director for Hyatt Guns of Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the nation’s biggest sellers, said he believes the opponents were simply scaremongering.
“While this will create a bunch of memes, and gun folks will laugh or point fingers, gun industry insiders have known for years that most politicians have zero acuity when it comes to firearms. They are, however, well versed in creating fearmongering about the evil boogeyman flavor of the month; in this case, guns. Dick Durbin and his ilk are not stupid people. They know exactly what they’re doing by lying to the American people, and they know many will believe them,” he told us.
The new ATF ban could affect over 20 million owners of the weapons. After years of approving the use of the brace, the ATF changed course and now requires the guns to be destroyed or registered or the braces removed and trashed.
Just 250,000 registered their weapons by the June 1 deadline. They are likely hoping that the suits against the ATF make it to the Supreme Court, where it could be overturned.
