Scherff! Need dudes with attitudes like his on the OL.

Ok now can you list the guys that will make over a million dollars as a freshmen in college and have a good chance to play for a national championship? I’m only upset because of the crappy way he left. Ditching iowa on such short notice. Can’t say I blame him for leaving for Alabama and it’s winning tradition. He’s gonna make more in college then many of us will make in a lifetime.

Recruiting services rank over 1000 kids every year. Of those, maybe 30ish get classified as 5 stars. Maybe two of those are tackles any given year. There is a fairly high statistical probability that injuries in a player's college career will either end his career or dramatically reduce his ability. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that so few 5 star players appear on the OP's lists.

Some additional statistics:

Alabama's 2013 to 2022 recruiting classes:
5 Star Offensive Line Recruits: 7
4 Star Offensive Line Recruits: 28
Former Alabama offensive lineman rated in the top 2 NFL tiers: 0
Alabama offensive lineman in transfer portal: 5

Former SEC offensive lineman rated in the top 2 NFL tiers: 1
Former BIG offensive lineman rated in the top 2 NFL tiers: 6

My takeaway is that becoming an elite offensive lineman has more to do with the work and development that takes place after high school than any rating a recruit has coming out of high school.

💯 agree. Been saying that for years.
CSB here but posted a while back Iowa has lacked that piss and vinegar olineman since BS. As expected the usual suspects immediately went into attack mode because how dare anyone say TW and TL weren’t 2 of the best ever and were 1st rounders and are the best…
Never once disagreed, will always consider both terrific Hawks and will always promote the fact they are absolutely fantastic at what they do.
However the likes of Sherff, Yanda, Gallery and even J Ferentz just carried themselves a little differently on the field and gave the impression that they just wanted to demoralize their opponent into submission. Not to trigger anyone but basically bullying.
I actually think Bo Stephens has a bit of that mean streak and still believe when he masters the assignment portion of his position, he has the potential to be Yanda like.

This is why I have hope for our OL in the near future. I think we have a couple young guys that have a huge mean streak. They just need to get better technically before it starts to show up as a positive.
Hope is all we have after this year.

None of Iowa's current crop are making it to that level without a serious coaching staff revamp which ferentz won't do because he's an egotistical narcissist who would rather lose than admit he's wrong.
