We can all agree that Iowa is not a vacation destination
for folks. However, the people who cross the state of Iowa
on Interstate 80 can find some interesting places for a stop.

To eat.....dine at the Amana Colonies for some good food.
To educate....visit the President Herbert Hoover Museum
To honor....tour the birth place of John Wayne at Winterset
To gas up...fill up car at World's Largest Truck Stop (Davenport)

I invite you to add to this list of places near Interstate 80 in Iowa

Get out as fast as you can

American Pie Cafe, named after the movie American Pie, in the truck stop that has changed ownership 15 times, located in Avoca, IA.

Honestly I-80 is not great for stopping in Iowa. It's pretty good for GTFO fast. Probably have better luck as a tourist on Avenue of the Saints or just following RAGBRAI.

Then you need a time machine back to circa 1975.
Or half a tank of gas and 2 hours (like 4 and half round trip and 5 and half if I stop in Illinois for some carts). Coach Ferentz is endowed by the family that owns the World's Largest Truckstop.

I've been to that joint. Besides truck whores at 3am not much was going on as I drove to O'hare. I wouldn't have any clue how Coach Ferentz is endowed. Good on you.

That's pretty disrespectful. They have a mall size food court in the truck stop and they keep longer hours than the mall. Way more jobs than your average Kwik Star.

True story. My friend wanted a burrito at 3am at the world's biggest truck stop and was unable to procure one.

That place absolutely sucks. I live 5 minutes from there. Back in the day, we’d hit it for late night/early AM breakfast after the bars closed. The Cornstalk restaurant in Shelby, though it’s new location isn’t as good as the old, is superior.

Id suggest a detour off 80 and take 880. Swing by the Twisted Tail in BeeBeetown. Thank me later.

The the most unique stops on I-80 are its rest areas. Does any other state have such fine public rest areas on a per capita basis? The only one I can think of is the welcome center when you are driving into Florida on I-75.

Pretty sure the convenience store portion of the truck stop is always open and always has hot food available. Maybe not a burrito, but something greasy & fattening.

The Arby's across the road is open 24/7.

Lion’s Den gets a lot of short visits

And perpetually sticky floors.

I'm surprised, there's always cars there. This, in an age where free porn is readily available on that internet thingy. Guess some people just have to meet new people and get a tug.

If you want to see toilets overflowing due to disposable diapers and syringes.
