Transfer portal

I'm not doubting JoeT or Ulis, I was just pointing out that the KcTo's proposed 5-man "Oregon style" lineup is a little short of quickness on the perimeter.

You mention Fran is too proud to go to the transfer portal. Then mention a player Fran picked up in the transfer portal...?
The transfer portal has only been around since 2018, and the NCAA just approved a 1 time transfer without having to redshirt, We were full on scholarships the last 2 seasons. What do we know about Fran and the transfer portal other than he's picky about keeping team chemistry intact?

Fran is picky about the "right" fit. He wants someone with a connection. So,that makes it more difficult for Iowa.... That noted, there are more and more players entering the portal every year. That will help some, as the chances of Iowa having a previous connection to a player increases.... but we are still at more of a disadvantage than average teams.

This year Fran may need to roll the dice on a player. We need some players .

I don’t really follow recruiting but what about Juco bigs? Or is it too late in the game to get in on some of those guys? Wouldn’t have thought about it before but Nunge leaving certainly creates more of a need to explore all the options available.

Give me a name of a player who can't shoot, certainly can't pass the ball, and in your own words, can't defend away from the basket. If you aren't an offensive threat, NBA pick and roll will not work in today's game. Most mocks don't have him as even a 2nd round pick. Free agent may be worth a flyer.
I think that was true as late as half or even 2/3rds of the way through the conference season, but by the end of the season, I saw several mock drafts not only having him taken in the 2nd round, but some even share the possibility of him rising into the late 1st round. I think his stock went up by the end of the season.

I don't see Weesy in the mock draft, which would be great for Houston, if it falls that way (both Suggs and Ayo).

Matrice Mitchell a 6-10 kid is transferring from Gopher program. Iowa recruited him. Not an offensive post. And Choi Marial Maryland Center in Portal

The transfer process is turbo charged. Not only are we seeing the expected, but multiple completely out of the blue player moves as well.

He won’t be driving in the NBA, he’ll shoot almost nothing but 3’s.
Then why is the feedback from the NBA saying he needs to finish stronger to the basket...?

I was listening to The Mighty 1630 KCJJ last week, and they had Adam Haluska on the show. He mentioned the same thing - Joe W needs to learn to finish stronger. Jus sayin...

Joe did improve in that area significantly this year. But has a lonnng way to go.
That noted, yeah he will primarily be a 3 pt specialist.... But if he wants to get drafted, he has to add to his game... There are a lot of 3 pt specialists out there .

Santos Silva looked good in video but I don't think I saw him make a single shot with the right hand. Wouldn't he be pretty easy to guard then?

I watched several TT games this year and this guy cannot shoot very well IMO

I’m getting very frustrated that we have not snagged a ‘big’ out of the portal yet. Immediate playing/starting minutes available at an upper tier major conference program should be very attractive to all of them. Especially one that just graduated the PoY and showed that the offensive production will be there for whoever takes his place.

Can someone... @Franisdaman (?) ...please list the remaining higher profile big men left in the portal that FM should be aggressively pursuing?

Don't be frustrated as it could take weeks. The staff is in silent ninja mode.

Here are just the uncommitted PFs in the portal. It’s a lot to sort through.

I don't see Graves from Eastern Washington in the portal. Anyone know where he went. He would have been a great fit.

Big names in the portal at center are Keesler NC and Iglehan Louisville. I doubt that we get either of them. I still think Race Thompson IU would be a good fit (6-8, 230 physical 4/5). A kid I haven't seen, but could maybe add something we don't have, is Tre Williams out of Indiana State. Only 6-6, but 250 (not 190 listed in the portal). He was on the all-conference defensive team as a sophomore starting center.

Looks like the entire Gopher team is leaving, lol.

And that is what you get once you get on that coaching carousel. Massive roster turnover, a few years to recruit the new coaches players then maybe some improvement then complacency followed by anger because we're only getting to the second round, then another firing/run off then it just starts again. The Goophs won't be respectable for another 4 or 5 years, which is a good thing for them but a poor model for Iowa.

Dale had all kinds of career destroying injuries. The last two Woodbury seasons would have been better had Dale stayed healthy. Big guy with a decent shot, good inside scoring and good around the basket. Would have been the perfect starter opposite Ute, like White was the year before.

Dale's example perfectly states the caution of expecting anything significant from Jack. Two injuries in two years.
Yeah, Dale Jones is a classic example of a injuries demoralizing a guy.

My expectations are that no players will be brought in from the portal. If they pick up anybody I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Be prepared for surprise. Don't you think the staff sees the huge hole in the middle? Desperation is often the father and mother of invention. Iowa needs one or two big boys and F McC knows he cannot leave that hole unfilled.

Unless, of course, Fran knows something about the Big O that is not apparent to literally every other observer. I'm going with nyet on that second theory and da on the first. Some bigs are coming.
