Traore in Transfer Portal

I'm learning to really dislike the transfer portal. Has ruined college sports.

The NCAA just needs to splinter into an NBA development league and stop calling it college athletics for those schools that want to pay their players and get back to amateur athletes for the remainder of the schools.

Tuition, room and board, along with a nominal stipend to account for missed opportunity cost of not working due to athletic commitments should have been enough.

BM needed him and either dix/sandfort to stay. Stirtz needs another good shooter around him
There's 1000 players in the portal and it doesn't even close to portal entrants for another almost 3 weeks. I'm guessing we'll be fine without players that got us zero NCAA tourney invites the last 2 years and a rip roaring 15th place finish in the B1G this year.

Maybe BM indicated to Seydou that he should look elsewhere. He wasn't one of the guys specifically named by BM that he wanted to make sure stuck around.
He might not have specified Traore because he wasn't in the portal, unlike Dix, Koch, and Sandfort. That said, you may be right that after conversations BMac and/or Traore thought it best to part ways.

That's one I'm going to miss. Hopefully we can find someone better though.
The worry for me is that in addition to losing Dix and Freeman, Iowa also loses all their rotational players and can’t find replacements that are clearly better.

It would be nice to keep a few of these guys because even with their flaws, at least they’re known quantities.

Little bit on small side to play PF, didn't have perimeter skills to be a good scoring SF. Athletic, but that is mainly compared to the rest of Fran's guys. If have to think if McCollum thought he was a priority to keep, he wouldn't be leaving. Thanks Traore and Good luck at your next stop.

Weird, I assumed he was likely to transfer if Fran had stayed.

Seemed way more like a McCollum player than a Fran player.

Maybe he thinks he can get more money elsewhere.

I can't imagine McCollum told him to leave but he's cool with Kingsbury taking up a scholarship?

Meh. It's early, Most of the former Hawks were on a team that went 7-13 in BIG play. I'm guessing the former players that left weren't (or aren't) the type of players BMcC wants on his team.

To those that left, see ya!

Why do posters keep saying that DIx and Pryce were not the type of players BMc wants on his team. He called on them by name to return along with Koch in his first presser.

Well Traore wasn't the same type of player as the rest that left, he defended and rebounded.

The reason I say it is because it seems like a money grab and that is more important than being an Iowa Hawkeye and creating a winning atmosphere. All of them can go and grab the bag and if you don't want to be on the team, then see ya later.

He played last year for a chance to come back and prove something, probably for a fraction of what he could have gotten elsewhere. It sounds like he has turned down big bucks from IU and Kansas. Still haven't lost hope.

True. but very erratic and not a high percentage player. Maybe BMc could have improved that, because he did bring athleticism a some raw talent. I didn't see an outside shot, but he could score in the paint.

we was a good defender, imo.

would have been even better under Ben
Agreed.

I do not understand all these guys leaving. The 2 parts to their game that would improve significantly would be their Defense & Rebounding. If you want to get to that next level, whatever that may be, Ben McCollum would be THE guy to play for...

Then again, maybe Ben does not want some of them? That, and I do see that some people want a change after losing a coach. But still....

Traore was not a great defender. His quickness allowed him to make some good defensive plays, but his fundamentals were not good. Not saying McCollum couldn’t turn him into a good defender. I wish he’d stay, personally.
Couldn't shoot and played for a bad BT team.
He's a dime a dozen and good luck to him with his future endeavors.

This isn't starting out great from a player perspective. So far we have an excellent point guard and..... anybody? Anybody? Beuhler??

I think transferring is fun. Or perhaps “rewarding” is a better word.

I’ve changed jobs a few times in my professional career, and in one case I was lucky enough to have been specifically targeted and recruited. I’m not going to lie — it was a nice boost for the ego. It’s a really cool feeling to be wanted.

I think it’s the same for these guys in the transfer portal. It’s intoxicating to have different schools vying for your talents, and it can be rewarding in a way that staying committed to a single school never can be.

Plus, many of these guys end up making money by making a move as well. A lot of people talk about the money being the sole reason that players choose a school, or move from school A to school B. And that’s not untrue. But I think there’s more to it. I think it’s about being wanted, and being valued, and how good that feels.

The quote below from the movie “Moneyball” has always stuck with me on this subject:

“You’re not doing it for the money. You’re doing it for what the money says. And it says what it says to any player that makes big money — that they’re worth it.”

Good points. It would be a serious ego boost, especially if you are not "in" on your current school. Freeman never really was. He didn't know much of anything about Iowa, when asked about some of our history.

I am a diehard Hawkeye. No way I would leave. But maybe test the waters for some more cash... Or vice versa, and take the minimum to survive school comfortably. Then use that extra cash to help the team buy another player or three, being the high dollar player that I was. 🤣

With that said, I would totally F with any school from Nebraska & Illannoy! "Yeah coach, I think I am leaning towards playing in Omaha".... then ghost them at the last minute. LoL

Regardless, I have full-faith in BMC. This should be a fun ride!!
