Big props, but no surprise to see Noah Fant appear on yet another All-America team; but great props to Tristan Wirfs for appearing as well! Both second team Mid-Season All Americans from The Athletic. (Sorry- don't know how to do a linky…)
If the team keeps racking up W's and its stars keeps shining, we will have to endure endless speculation on 'who's leaving school for the draft' from Black Friday through spring drills. If everybody that's not a senior comes back and plays next year, this could be one hell of a football team.
Unless Hockenson is the 1st team Mid Season AA, the Athletic should be considered fish wrap.
I know its only a "midseason award" but as you said about orgs that do this, at least scrutinize the players a bit closer. In any case it appears Sternberger (SP) from TAM is their AA. SEC guy, he has some nice stats, almost as good as either Fant or Hock. He has stats that rival TWO PLAYERS FROM THE SAME TEAM..Maybe Noah's brothers are making the selections. Otherwise, sir, you are correct. Hockenson is a better all-around football player than Fant, and he's proven that over and over on the field. But just like early polls, Fant had the hype, so he's still getting the love. Which is great for him, and I certainly appreciate Fant's skills and am glad he's a Hawkeye, but let's not overlook the "other" guy.
The Mackey Award got it right this week when it named Fant AND Hockenson co-winners.
If organizations are going to give out awards, they should be meticulous in evaluating the candidates. The Athletic has a great reputation, but it clearly blew it on this one.
Fant will leave based on draft whispers, even if he is 3rd team AA.Fant will leave based on draft whispers, even if he is 3rd team AA.
I get the feeling he is gone regardless.
