So I'm traveling down I-80 tonight (not driving) and I notice each time we get ready to pass a truck he flashes his trailer lights twice. Is this code for something? Should I flash him back? If I do will I get lucky?

Flashing lights usually means one of two things:

1) They flash headlights when you're far enough ahead to pull back into the right lane

2) if they pass you, you flash your brights to let them know they can move to right lane. They will, and then double flash the trailer lights to say "thank you".

Rather a sexist comment you do realize that not all truckers are male now days.

That makes sense. What about as I'm about to pass him? Is he just telling me he sees me and won't run me over when I'm in his blind side?

If you weren't driving, how can you flash him back? Does the car in which you were riding have dual controls?

My guess is that the moron driving the car in which you were riding has his brights on, and the trucker is telling him to dim them.

The idea here is trailers are long and not really well lit, and at night it's difficult to see when you've cleared the passed truck. So, they have some sort of switch that blinks the lights to the passing truck to let them know they're clear to get back in the right lane.

He's actually doing the passing vehicle a favor. I have also seen them do this for cars and cars do this for them. Pretty sure it's illegal to do...but they're just trying to help. They don't want accidents either.

Yep. I would add that many trucks are not 'flashing' their lights between low & high beams, that is technically illegal, but rather many big trucks have a 'marker interrupt' toggle switch they hit a time or 2 when someone has passed them enough to re-enter the right lane in front of them or to hit to thank the driver behind for let him know it is safe to switch lanes.

Some truckers (especially the older drivers) have a general contempt for '4-wheelers' (cars, pickups & SUV's) and will only give acknowledging 'flashes' to other big trucks. Kind of a truckers 'code'.

Regarding passing in a truckers 'blind spot': while they certainly have blind spots, big rigs usually have excellent side mirrors and they have the added advantage of height so they can actually look down at traffic and reduce their blind spots. The big thing is to not stay in a big rigs blind spot any longer than you have to.

OP is not talking about the truck's headlights. Talking about the trailer taillights.

The passed truck will blink their headlights indicating the passing trucker can get in. The passing truck when back in the lane will then blink his taillights as thank you for the help.

One time I passed a truck on the interstate that had left their blinker on. When I returned to the right lane I turned my left and right blinker on alternately. The trucker turned his blinker off and flashed his lights a few times to (I think) say thanks. Those guys have a tough job, so it feels good to help them out.

Yes, I know that, but that isn't what the OP is talking about. He's talking about when he is preparing to pass a truck and the truck blinks its taillights.

My guess was that he was asking the driver following him to dim his headlights. Another possibility is that the car is following too closely and the trucker wants it to back off.

If this is on an interstate or other 4-lane divided highway, nobody should have their high beams on.

OK, I get it now. Normally, I would think the truck also just passed another truck, but it doesn't sound like it here. The only thing I can think of is like you say, the potential passer is in his blind spot too close and is signaling him to pass...but I would think that would be reserved for other trucks following too close. That'd be my guess anyway.

Love for truckers in this thread? And on I-80 of all places? Probably the worst stretch of road (around Des Moines) in the state. I can't stand truckers. You do realize that truckers are some of the dumbest effers in society and many of them drive because it pays good money and they are not capable of doing anything else as productive or as lucrative. Just ask any friends that are dispatchers how freaking stupid some of these people are. They hog the road, clog up traffic, throw rocks and debris off at other traffic, cause extra wear and tear on our road system, and are a general nuisance. I especially love it when one truck is passing another, one going 64, the other 65, on I-80 where the speed limit is 70 and the flow of trafffic is regularly 80 mph. That's always a fun experience to get log jammed behind those two idiots. Fees the States charge truckers for the use of our road systems should be increased exponentionally. There should be a movement towards using rail for the movement of goods across the country as it is safer, a better use of resources, and more economical. Use short haul trucks to deliver the goods to their final destination.

SoDak.....Next time you eat a meal, or buy those wrangler jeans, thank a trucker. Wouldn't have either without them. Just saying.....

In the old days, truckers were, by and large, much better drivers than the average person on the road. This only was logical. In recent years, that is much less true. Which also is logcal, considering how the career has changed and the people it has attracted.

Not true. I suggested the railways should be used for long haul transport and short haul trucking used to transport those goods to their final destinations. My wranglers and food will still get to the stores. My issue was with OTR long haul trucking which congests our country's interstate system with some of the biggest idiots driving the largest vehicles on the road. It is both inefficient and dangerous.

What does the tapping of a foot on the floor of a truck stop bathroom stall mean?

Holy balls.

The person in the stall has ear buds and is listening to music, most likely Dave Dudley's Greatest Hits.

Truckers can do whatever they want to signal to others that it is ok to move back to the right lane but, In Iowa, it is pointless for them to do so as the stupid ass drivers here have a serious case of the left lane lounging.

Typical Iowa Driver: Speed limit is 65 so I am ok hanging out here in the left lane bc I am traveling at 67 mph.

Outside of ISU and Steven King it is the absolute worst thing this state has to offer.
